I invited my mom's friend and her two children (ages 16 + 8) to my wedding and Chinese reception. She made a point to come up to me and said, "I've given your gift to your mom already. I think you'll really like my gift and find it very useful." I thanked her and found out the next week from my mom that it was a baby monitor and that was it. I am not pregnant.
How about you guys?
LOL. I think MAYBE, just maybe, she might be trying to drop some hints. Very subtle hints, of course. ;)
O wow that is really funny!
For our engagement my FIL's gave us a PS3 not a bad present at all but not really one that was screaming engagement to me, especially since my FI is the one using 99% of the time to play MLB 10 The Show. I think they just really wanted to give their son a present and used it as an excuse!
We got a porcelain egg with a sort of opalescent finish and a terrible poem about weddings written in gold script on it. It has gold curly type legs that it stands on. It may be one of the ugliest things I've ever seen. I'm also an interior designer. Why would you give something like that to an interior designer?! DH and I have been debating writing our name and wedding date on it and giving it as a joke to our next set of friends getting married with their names and date underneath ;)
That is beyond bizarre!!!!!!
I was kind of hoping for strange presents, but didn't really get any really random ones....
@bohemianbailie we got a PS3 from the groomsmen as a wedding gift!! I love it! :) We backed up all our wedding photos on it in case something happens to the computer :)
@bakerella friends of mine got a bowl that looks like a vagina...they joked about gifting it to us as a joke on our wedding day..we didnt get it and i was a little disappointed, i thought it would be a fun tradition!! you should do it!!
@Baileyh: LOL! I have a sick desire to see the bowl... I'm really really really tempted to pass it on because I know it will never get back to the original gifter. It's the one thing that didn't go in the Goodwill pile that really should have......
@Baileyh: I would love to see that bowl also! That's just so bad it's great.
@trugem: No, she doesn't think I'm pregnant. She's notorious for giving horrible gifts to my mom and hand writes the price on a sticker and sticks it on the bottom. I guess I'm mostly just venting because I know she's expecting a great thank you card and all I really want to just do is send a card with "WTF". :P
@lisa1783 "She's notorious for giving horrible gifts to my mom and hand writes the price on a sticker and sticks it on the bottom" WTHeck!!!!
@Lisa1783: She puts a handwritten price sticker on the bottom?! What?! Why?! This woman is baffling!!!
@Baileyh: I love the idea of backing up pictures, I had no idea we could do that!
LMAO at the hand written sticker...keeps getting better and better
that egg and vagina bowl are mighty odd too
OMG, I am cracking UP about the "handwritten price sticker." WHO DOES THAT?
The weirdest gift we received was a handmade vest. For me. Not sure how that was a wedding gift, or a gift that BOTH of us could enjoy, but yes, we received a handmade vest.
Our very close friends gave us a painting and on the card it said "we saw this and it reminded us of you. We hope everytime you look at this painting, it reminds you of your special day"
It was a painting of a monkeys dressed up as a bride and groom!
It was (hopefully) a joke, but we put it on our fireplace mantel because it makes us laugh.
We got a handful of really ugly ornaments. One was a huge peach ball and said "2010" and there was a plastic one covered with glitter that said "Love"...more like "Fug" those will not be on our tree. Ick. Ugly AND random.
I really think we need to see the bowl and the egg.
@Monkeygirl: LMAO a handmade vest seriously? was it from your great great grandmother? I hope it was someone old bc if it wasnt that just makes it even worse.
I havnt had any weird ones YET but all this talk about vagina bowls, baby monitors, handmade vests is making want to get one
@CanAmBride: LOL - I can only imagine the look on your faces once you saw the monkeys...in bridal outfits. Love it! :)
We still have a few months to go until the wedding, but my first shower was last weekend.
FI's grandma knitted us a quilt. Not really my style, but it's the thought that counts. HOWEVER, after I opened it and ooh'ed and ahh'ed over it, she took it and told me she'd store it at her house so our puppy didn't destroy it. Gee, thanks.
It wasn't given to me, but I've seen it:
A chips and salsa dish. But not just ANY chips and salsa dish--one that rests on a stem that rises about 4 feet from the base--so like a chips and salsa tree? I mean, it's like really tall.
And it's all kinds of garish pseudo-Mexicana colors. It looks like a minature Seattle space needle. By way of Mexico.
@CanAmBride: That sounds kinda awesome weird. I love that it's above your mantle.
@JennyW1: Picture?
Egg and bowl, pictures?
Also, I feel jipped; however, we did receive a favorite memory card which retold a story of us saving the person from ninjas. That's pretty awesome.
i think leaving the price sticker on may be a old-fashioned chinese thing. my MIL does the same thing for a lot of her gifts. she doesn't write in the price but sometimes she'll leave on the sticker if it came with one. it's probably so that you know they spent a lot. but sometimes, i'll find out that she bought the item on deep discount, but left the "original" price sticker on. a bit ridiculous to me.
We got this at our engagement party

We don't have fish, or a tank. We don't fish. We don't have any fish decor in the house (except one bathroom has fishie on the soap pump).
They said "this was sooooo you!" I put it on the shelf in FI's bathroom for now :S
We've started receiving gifts for our first shower, along with some things i purchased for the wedding. Well, last week I opened up all the packages from amazon.com (I figured it was all wedding decor purchases), and what did I find?

Oh yeah, birkenstocks. I was so confused. I thought someone bought them for us as a joke, because they didnt' know where we were registered.
Turns out, the mailman put them in the wrong box and they belonged to our neighbor.
@prettylizy: OMG!!!!!!!!!! I have that!!! A relative gave one of those to me for Christmas one year!!!!!!!! I forgot all about it!!! I think I still have it....not sure where it is.
@blondeeebuckeye: That's hilarious.
Sorry, I don't have a picture--it was given to a friend of mine, so we've all had a bit of fun with the "spaceneedle salsa dish" as we like to call it. She suspects it was actually used when she got it, too!
@JessicaL- haha, no it was from his Aunt, whom I see fairly often, so I have to wear it. To clarify, it's actually pretty decent (it's one of those asymmetrical 'swing' vests that are in style right now), but it was just so RANDOM. My hubby was like WTF- what are "we" supposed to do with THIS? She also gave us some random things she clearly had in boxes just lying around her house.
LOL, we also received a bizarre gift from three of his cousins- which was a $50 gift certificate to Victoria's Secret. Not really a bad gift- (just random)- but what was funny is that the gift certificate was in a STAR WARS themed BIRTHDAY card that played music when you opened it. Umm...yeah.
@prettylizy: bahahaha
what in the world!
why did they think it was soooooo you?!?!
i'm dying lol
Just wondering - how are you planning to do the thank you note for this gift?
@Maggie Mae Maybe we should get together with our respective fish bowls and have a little reunion party.
@aribari I don't know what about a giant glass fish with it's mouth open is 'sooo me', but what do you say to something like that?
We came home one night to a bag full of rolls of quarters and hot tub fragrances from my aunt and uncle. It was really funny because I was like, wth? but it was also $70 in quarters, which was pretty nice, but just funny! When I talked to my aunt, she said "we didn't want you to guess what it was!" LOL~
@prettylizy: I never really knew exactly what the purpose of the fishie was......... and yes, I was a little baffled when I received mine too.......
@PitBulLover: I wanted to take a picture with a pillow under my shirt with a caption "How did you know?!?!" but my husband won't let me. =P
For now, it'll just be the standard "thank you so much for your support and presence at our wedding and thank you very much for your gift. we are sure that we will think of your support when we use this in the future" At first I didn't even want to dignify her gift by even mentioning it but my mom would flip out if she found out.
@prettylizy: I'm oddly mesmerized by this. Mildly horrified but mesmerized as well. Funny how weird stuff does that to you.
@Lisa1783: LOL I wish your husband would have let you!! hilarious! Oh well...that is very mature of you to be the bigger person and suck it up! I would have a hard time doing it as well :-)
