@PermaStudent:  lol! good job =P I’d just bake some cookies for my neighbors and say thank you! That’s totally awesome of them that they kept an eye out for you!

@PermaStudent:  Been there! I once left to visit family for a week over Thanksgiving. I locked my front door, but evidently didn’t click it shut. I come home and my neighbor says “By the way, your front door has been wide open all week – ever since the day you left! I went by and shut it yesterday – I hope that’s okay.”

My first thought – “WTH! All my stuff has been stolen for sure!” – It wasn’t. I lived in a college town and all the no-good students were gone for the week too – lucky me! My heating bill was a bit outrageous that month though being that I was in Washington State at the time.

My second thought – “You noticed my door was wide open and didn’t think to close it until day 6 of this daily observation?!?” – Of course, I didn’t say that to my neighbor – I just profusely thanked her.

Since then I always locked the deadbolt – no denying it’s closed that way! Sheesh.

Ah aw sorry 🙁 I hate when something like that happens, especially around people who you live by. One time (not long after we moved into our house) I was waiting in my car at the end of the street to turn on a busy road. While I was waiting I noticed a guy riding a bicycle was coming and I was blocking the sidewalk. Without even a thought I put my car into reverse and backed up a little. Of course there was a car behind me, I forgot to check! I was so embaressed, I felt so stupid and to top it off it seemed to be someone who lived right around my house. Both of our cars were completely fine, and the lady was really nice about it… but I about died. For days I tried to find out if they did live on the street … two years later and I’m still not sure if they do it not. I hope not!

Anyway … so I know your horrified feeling and hope my story made you feel a little better 🙂 Everyone makes a dumb mistake sooner or later! I’m just glad that it turned out okay and your neighbors were nice enough to close it for you.

@PermaStudent:  Some lessons are better learned when they’re learned the hard way! I once left my hair straightener on when I was living in an apartment with roommates and was gone for a 3 day weekend. On day 2 my roommate found it but I could’ve burned the freaking house down! I now UNPLUG my straightener lol Seriously, cookies will reinforce that they look out for your house too haha! Don’t beat yourself up, and my advice is to try to downplay it when you tell your FI.

been there, done that. your neighbor is awesome for locking the door for you!

i left a pan on the stove with water in it for 25 minutes one day too. thankfully, it just ruined the pan and not the stovetop, and nothing caught fire.

@PermaStudent:  I’d try to laugh it off and be like “omg lol guess what I did hahaha” My SO is the type though if I was being hysterical or feeling overly guilty, she’d soothe me and SHE’D be the one to downplay but I’ve been with people and know people who will match your tone so if you’re freaking, they’ll freak. Depending on how your SO is, you can figure out how you want to play it lol
