As I suspected, after I dropped it he started joking about getting engaged again.  This time it was "I'll propose with a string.  Would that be ok?"

me: "as long as you announce to everyone we're ENGAGED!"

him: "so you're ok with a string?"

me: "but what will our engagement photos look like without a ring?"

him: "they don't show rings in those."

me: "when the hell do you even look at those in the paper?"

me, looking sad: "you don't think I deserve a diamond?" :(

him, obviously feeling bad: "i was joking!  I will get you a BIG diamond."

    me: "really?!  when!?"

him, getting a phone call: "ok baby I have to go meet my client, I'll be back soon."

    SML.  :/

I was *so* close.  Of course after he left I knew I couldn't bring it up again.

I feel like guys are more comfortable joking about the proposal than talking about a real timeline. But the fact that he's even joking about it is a very good sign! That means it's a possiblity for him and it's on his mind. Good luck!

*sigh* I wish I could start planning.  :/  It will happen someday, and I will let you all know.  Maybe in a month, maybe in 5 months... maybe more...

Have you seen "Stepmom" with Julia Roberts? He proposes with a string initially... but then slides the ring on the string & onto her finger. It's pretty romantic & sweet

After my FI bought my ring he continually joked about buying a $22 pink ring from Walmart... I think your guy is messing with you & trying to throw you off! :) Its going to happen soon!

Oh Mmmtaco, I have a story for you.

My FI was teasing me for about 6 months before we got engaged telling me that the pearl was the new diamond.  That getting a pearl for as an engagement ring was the latest.  Of course, I always knew he was teasing.  Well, when he finally did propose the room we were in was very dark.  He held the box open but way down low and I really thought it was pearl.  All I could see was a solitaire that was round! I remember thinking "Oh Gosh! He got me a pearl! I need to say yes! and worry about the ring later." So, I said yes and he put the ring on my finger.  Only when it was on my finger did I finally realize it was a solitaire diamond!

Aww! He's joked now about a string, about "borrowing" my mom's ring, and about using my cheap costume jewelry ring.

Tacos - that sounds like torture! But I think it will make the proposal that much sweeter when it happens!

I think that he is thinking about it, and joking is his way of bringing it up. My bf was joking about it the other day. I feel that if he is bringing it up then it is a good sign. Good luck!

My fiance bought me a ring from a gumball machine at the grocery store one day.  He handed it to me, in the plastic case and all, and said 'Here's your ring.  Will you marry me?'.  He noticed the dumbfounded look on my face and said 'What- you don't like it?  Hey, the best thing about it is it's all paid for and I can buy you a new replacement ring every WEEK.  You know I like to treat you right, baby'.

How about a cigar band ring?  I know of a girl who went out with her bf in college and he bought a cigar, handed her the band and asked her to marry him! She got the real ring 3 days later..he'd finally gotten up the courage. Seems the cigar and a brandy gave it to him promptly!  :)

Before we got engaged, my fiance used to tell me that he'd propose with a ring pop (candy) to which I always replied "Try it and you die." LOL. I think guys like to poke fun when it comes to this subject only because they're aware of how high our expectations are. Diamonds aren't cheap, so they know they have to really step up to the plate to fulfill our expectations. This makes them nervous, hence they bug us to aleviate their nervousness. Just a crazy theory of mine.

OMG.  Hilarious.  I do think my BF is completely capable of doing something similar.  He's got a ridiculous sense of humor.  In fact, he attacked me with a water gun in bed last night.
