Oh my gosh, it’s still pretty surreal!!! We are engaged!
So, I posted last week about being really suspicious that it might be coming this weekend. The clue of all clues (I thought) was my mother writing in a note, “maybe your loooong wait will end this weekend!” I thought for sure she knew something, but no, she didn’t (yikes) but she sure guessed right!
So I was super excited all day Thursday and Friday. Friday evening I got out of class and out of my workstudy job at grad school, packed up my stuff, and made the 3 hour drive from when my school is to my FI’s (eeek!) and my home. I was thinking about the chances of it happening that weekend the whole way home, and when I called him up to let him know I was going to be home a little later than I’d thought, and to go ahead and eat dinner without me if he wanted, he sounded awfully chipper when he said, “No, I’ll wait for you to come home. I made dinner.” (He usually makes something, or has something ready, when I come home after my week at school, but he almost never announces that he’s done so if we talk as I’m driving home).
So I thought that was odd, but nice, and figured maybe he was just being nice since we would be having a late night packing, and it was the beginning of a special weekend.
So a little later, I arrive home, lug my stuff into the house, and when I get inside, he’s in the bathroom. I say hi and a minute later he comes out of the bathroom, wearing the nice shirt he had on when we first met (at a dance), and freshly shaved. We kissed and hugged hello, and I said, “you’re all dressed up!?” And he replied, “I wanted to look nice tonight.” He was shaking!! So now I was highly suspicious and starting to get excited/freaked out, but trying not to assume anything.
Then, he said, “I have a surprise for you. Sit down somewhere and I’ll give it to you!” And I was like, “A surprise?! Yikes!!! Where should I sit?!!” I sat down on the couch, he told me to close my eyes, and put something small and square in my hands and sat down next to me. I opened my eyes and there was a little black box with a white gossamer ribbon around it!!!! He said, “open it!” so I did. We were both shaking!
Inside the box there was my dream ring! So delicate and pretty, wow! He asked me if I liked it (what a silly question) and I said of course I did! Then he knelt down in front of me, took my hands, and asked me to marry him!! Of course I said yes. 😀 We sort of sat there and kissed and were stunned for a minute, and then I told him, “you have to put the ring on me!” So he did.
We are so happy! The weekend at his cousin’s wedding was super fun. We kept our engagement a secret from everyone until the day after the wedding, when we spent most of the day with my FI’s family on the beach. He told them while we were walking on the beach, and they were super excited! They were also fascinated by the fact that the stone is a moissanite, which they’d never heard of before.
Today he has to call my dad and set up that conversation, since he didn’t do that before proposing– he thought it should be up to the couple first and the woman’s parents second. I hope my dad isn’t annoyed by this. . . eek. And then later today, I’ll be calling my parents and ltting them know that we got home safely, and we have something exciting to tell them, but I’m going to save the details until my FI and my dad meet for lunch and talk, since I think that is the most respectful way to go about this. . . yikers, my FI (!) and I are nervous about that!
Anyway, we are so happy and it is SO nice to be able to talk about getting married without being embarrassed to bring it up!!
And, after all this long-windedness, here are some pictures of the beautiful ring! It’s yellow gold with a 5mm Forever Brilliant moissanite. I love the rainbows in the stone! It was made by Carla Caruso Jewelry.
