I'm just so stinking excited, I had to post here to get some of it out.
I work at a vet hospital, and we have a client who breeds english bulldogs. He recently had a litter, and it turns out that one of the little girls is deaf. When the breeder brought in one of his females for a c-section, we got to talking and I heard about this little lovebug. I told him I'd be interested in adopting her if he was giving her away, and thought he'd never get back to me. I heard this morning that he called my hospital (on my day off, of course) about us, and we're going to meet the little lady tonight! We'd be adopting her from him, since he says he can't sell her and pretty much just wants to get rid of her. He's disappointed because she's really sweet, but he can't sell a deaf dog I guess.
We really wanted to adopt a dog from a shelter to avoid supporting breeders and puppy mills, and to give a dog who is in earnest need of a loving home a chance. Although we aren't adopting the older pound pooch we originally had in mind, I'm still really excited to give this little love muffin a shot at a great, loving home when she otherwise might not get one. Plus, with Mr. Octo's background in sign language (the man tries to sign to me while brushing his teeth) and my veterinary experience, I think we're ideal candidates to take in a little special-needs baby. So flipping excited!
Congratulations! Dogs bring so much joy into your life (as I'm sure you know :)
Mr. DG is talking about getting another puppy. I'm not quite ready for that right now, but maybe next fall.
Catch the Wonderdog is enough work right now!
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWW I'm so excited for you. FI and I want an english bulldog so bad. You and your FI will be perfect parents for her. Post pics when you get her!
Thanks, Mrs. DG. I had a black lab who passed away in May, and we both wanted to make sure I was emotionally ready to adopt another dog before we got one. Nellie was such a great dog, it makes me tear up a little still thinking about her...but we both feel ready to take a new little love in our lives! She'll complete our trifecta of odd animals...we have a one-eyed goldfish, a guinea pig with some personality quirks, and hopefully soon a deaf doggie! We're suckers for the "special" ones.
Oh my goodness!! This is such exciting news...I am thrilled for you! I'm a sucker when it comes to the shelter animals. I have a cat that I adopted at 8 months old from our local humane society. Then my bf and I went through a breeder to get a Bernese Mountain dog, which I know isn't a shelter pup, but she's the best. About a week ago, I adopted a gray kitten from a woman on craigslist, and then maybe next summer we will get our shelter puppy!
Yeah, basically I want to have a zoo. My friends thing I'm nuts, but I love them to pieces!!
Congrats!!!! We brought home our Cairn Terrier one year ago today!!

YAY FOR ADOPTION!
Everytime I hear the word "puppy" I'm thinking "please don't buy a dog -- adopt!" So happy that you are helping out this little girl :o)
JEALOUS!!! That is so exciting :) Yay for you!
What a cutie, snake! Thanks for sharing the excitement, guys! I'm jumping out of my skin :)
Enjoy puppy parenthood!
We recently adopted a cocker spaniel/poodle puppy and he is our joy (and a lot of work, but that's another post!)
I'm with you, hotchild. We were absolutely adamant that we weren't going to buy a dog. I feel a little bad that we might be adopting from a breeder, but she's an adoption regardless and she'd have ZERO chance in a shelter.
@LittleOctopus: Do not feel bad. The breeder would dump her at the shelter so quick and she would definitely have no chance. He probably wouldn't tell them about her being deaf and she would spaz out/be nervous and likely not be adoptable. Can you tell I volunteer in a city shelter? ;o)
You're doing a great thing :o)
Ahh LO that's great! I'm so excited for you. Puppies are so much fun! I can understand your feelings about supporting a breeder but this little doggie is in need regardless of where she is coming from and like you said wouldn't have a good chance at the shelter being deaf so I think it's great your adopting her!
I WANT A PUPPY! I'm JEALOUS! LOL...
Every time I mention the idea of a puppy, he says no. I can barely get the sentence out lol. He says "you have a puppy, he's in the back yard" (it's HIS dog and it is NOT a PUPPY! It is like 3 years old, and HUGE, and hyper) and I say "THAT is not A PUPPY", to which he replies "he ACTS like a puppy!" So then I continue to play mad and explain that I want a SMALL puppy that will grow into a SMALL dog. Like a Maltese! But still, no puppy
Sorry, I went off on my rant and totally got distracted! I meant to end that with Congrats and good luck! You'll have to pick a super cute name for her :)
Awwww so excited for you!!! Can't wait for pics! Both of our boys came from shelters, and I wouldn't trade them for the world! Our second one was "unplanned" hehe. We set out to just foster him, but then couldn't give the little guy up!
**I used to have a one-eyed goldfish too! Her name was Molly...I remember she had babies once, when she still had both eyes, and would eat them as soon as they popped out if they didn't swim away quick enough...whew, rough start to life!!!
That is so exciting! BF and I adopted a "puppy" (5 months old) from the pound for my birthday and he's my baby! He's mixed, American bull dog and pointer! He's such a sweetie! The price for adoption was around $100 but being that we got him fixed and with a micro chip makes it worth it. And when we got him, he got really sick and almost died but he finished his twice a day, 6week medication yesterday so we are very happy!
Having worked at a shelter, I suspect that the dog I'll eventually get will be a rescue Pittie. However, if I had to pick a breed, English Bulldogs have my absolute favorite canine personalities. Good luck, and post pictures!!
ohmygosh! That's so great! Rescue/special needs dogs are truly magical. CANNOT WAIT for pictures!
Congrats!!
I'm amazed at how well animals can overcome things. My brother's dog is blind and he is amazing! If you throw a frisbee he will find it bring it back to you and he knows his way around their house.
One day I want to adopt a dog. I really want a big dog and it wouldn't be fair right now b/c we're both gone every day for 9-11 hours and we have no yard.
@RedHerring: Us too! 80 percent of my shelter's intake is pit mixes. And 99 percent of the people that come looking for dogs are looking for "cute little dogs." Pits need help more than any breed (greyhounds being in a close second)
We got a puppy this spring, and I adore him. Now I want to get him a mastiff as a playmate... persuaded by these photos. :)
eeeeee the first one I adopted is a pit mix! (and I went in there wanting one of those small, cutesy ones haha) But I saw him in that cage and fell in love! This is my baby Benson with food on his nose! (it was him about 60 pounds ago too - this is the only one I have on my work computer!)
Aww that's really awesome! I thought I wanted a dog until I took care of my friends German Shepard and not only was it really annoying to take her out when it was cold, she LICKS and... ew. I'm too much of a germaphobe for that! But puppies are the cutest thing EVER!
Yay, congrats! A pet is such a great way to start a family together!
CONGRATS!!! I am such a dog lover! I have a pomeranian and I love him to death. I cant wait to buy a second dog. Enjoy the new puppy!
Yay! I'm so glad you are able to give her a home! It's so sad that she would lose "value" (monetarily or in anyway) over being deaf!! I'm so excited for you!!! Congrats!! :D
Awww! Congrats! They're all cute!! :) We adopted our dog from a shelter-she was at the shelter for the second time & we got her a week after she went in the second time-they were probably going to put her down. We couldn't imagine our lives without our Daisy!
Yay you all make me so happy! It's so funny that you're talking about pits...we were at a shelter yesterday and we fell in love with the most darling pitbull. When we called our apartment complex, they told us we'd get evicted if we brought her home. Mr. Octo was near tears, but it looks like she got adopted later that same day, so this pit story has a happy lining :)
P.S. We're going to meet our little girl in half an hour! Hopefully she can come home this weekend. Thank you guys again, and keep the happy puppy stories coming!
Don't forget to let us know how it goes! And any names you have picked out for her
Eeeee, ADORABLE!!! My FI and I have a French bulldog, and I am now basically obsessed with the bulldog breeds. They are SUCH great pets!
Congrats...you're soo lucky. I can't wait until my FI and I get our first puppy! Eeeeekk..makes me squirm just thinking about it :)
We just got back, and she's probably one of the cutest puppies I've ever seen. And definitely deaf :)
Maisie comes home Friday night!! And excuse the wacky hair and shininess...it's been a bit of a muggy day here in Raleigh and I just got a massage for my birthday, compliments of Mr. Octo! It's been a good day.
:-O!!!! She's tooo flipping cute for words. I love English Bulldogs they're sooo dang cute. Awhhh I'm so jealous, lucky pup is going to have a great home!
