My husband is in the Navy and we've been struggling to find orders to our next duty station...
Well, today we finally found out that we're moving to Oahu Hawaii!!!! We'll be stationed at Pearl Harbor. I'm so beyond excited I just had to share. We've vacationed in Maui before, but we've never been to oahu.
Have any of you bees ever lived in Hawaii?
p.s.- I wasn't sure if I should post this in military or hawaii or nesting or WHAT. So feel free to move it if you'd like :)
AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG YOUR LIFE IS PERFECT! How fun!!!!!!!!
Congrats, Miss Newlywed! I've never been to Hawaii so I'm jealous!! How long will you guys be stationed there? I lived in Puerto Rico for a year...totally different culture, but it was pretty great having the beach at your fingertips, and I loved my perma-tan =) Good luck with the move and adjusting to island life!
That's awesome! YAY! And how was the wedding?
edit-just found your other threads! lol.
Wow! That's amazing, I'm trying to be just happy for you and not jealous at all... no no, not jealous... ;)
THAT IS SO AWESOME!!!!!! You're not just visiting... you're going to LIVE there!!! AHHHHH!!!! Please keep buzzing (do other people call going on the bee 'buzzing' too? lol) and tell us all about it!!! When do you leave??
Thanks bees! I seriously feel like the luckiest girl on earth right now.
We had orders to Virginia beach, VA but they got screwed up and I was bummed... but, now were going to LIVE in HAWAII and I can't stop smiling I'm so excited!!!!!! The mess up ended up being a HUGE blessing!
His job will start in June so we'll start moving in May and we'll be there for 3 YEARS!
Navy life is tough at times, but MAN this definitely makes up for all the times the Navy has let me down :)
you lucky, lucky lady! those will be an awesome 3 years, for sure!
How amazing! I was told that prices are a bit more over there, but you get to live in Paradise!!!!! How exciting for you.
Yeah, I've heard it's expensive too! Hopefully we can do most of our shopping on base (and hopefully base prices are reasonable)
egb- LOL- one of my best friends is being a bum about it she said "don't get your hopes up, they'll probably just screw up your orders again" UM thanks? LOL I totally understand she's probably a little jealous.. I would be, but I wasn't trying to rub it in I'm just SO excited :)
thanks to whoever moved this to newlyweds (prob Miss AsB) :) idk why I didn't think of that one!
aww I hate when debbie downers pooping on my excitement! that sounds sooo awesome!
Hehe, I'm getting obsessed with the moving thing. Brings out my OCD! Since you are a newlywed after all and moving after marriage is a very newlywed thing to do!
@MissAsB- haha, I don't mind! I was actually hoping that you'd come along and put it in the right place :)
OMG, I am so jealous!!! Oahu is so beautiful, I only got to visit for 4 days two winters ago, but I was seriously in love. I looked into nursing positions there (how awesome would that be!) but lots of people want to live there, so nursing jobs aren't as plentiful. I am still keeping it on my radar though!
Holy sh*t! That's amazing. Congratulations!! We'll be living in the Caribbean - I can already feel the sand between my toes. :-)
YAY - YAY - YAY - YAY - that is so so wonderful
I don't blame you for being so excited - you need to stay on cloud 9 no matter what anyone says...And if someone says something negative fly to a computer & we'll mae you feel better HAAHAAHHAAAHAAAA
@valhalla- I was supposed to start nursing school in va, I hope I can get into one in oahu! I may want to choose another career path haha!
LOL @jackie-o- no one can burst MY bubble :)
@sweetadeline- the caribbean?!?!! Amazing :) how did you swing that??
OMG Bella!!! Thats so awesome!!! I am super happy for you, how exciting!
How exciting!
I was born & raised on the Big Island and have visited Oahu many, many times. Let me know if you have any questions!
dns567- haha. yes, I'd like to know everything please :) JK! Mainly the only thing we're worried about right now is moving our dog there. They put them in quarantine before they can get in to make sure they don't have rabies and I heard it can be a long application process. I'll miss my pug if she has to stay behind for a while :(
@ Bella - if you went to nursing school in Hawaii, you might have a better chance! I think it is harder for those from the mainland to get positions there, as they would like to consider locals first (understandably). Hawaiians have a culture in their own right, and those who have lived there are likely to understand it better than someone who just shows up for a nursing job. PLus, being as I am Canadian, I would have to deal with immigration, etc. A girl can dream though ;)
Fantastic! So I guess that means when FFI and I plan our honeymoon, we can just crash at your place then Bella! LOL...jk
I hope you guys have a really safe trip there. Hopefully you guys don't own a lot of things, I can't imagine how costly that would be to ship all there
@WendyS: When the military moves you, you don't have to pay for it. My husband is a civiilian working for the government and they moved our stuff for free. Weren't the best movers but as long as you don't have fancy stuff that's better than paying.
@wendy- LOL sure thing girl :) I'm not sure you want to spend your honeymoon in someones spare bedroom though... haha!
Thank god we're in the navy, they move everything for us! They're even going to ship our cars! :)
I lived in on Oahu for 6 months when I spent a semester at the University of Hawaii. Best 6 months ever. The weather is PERFECT every.single.day. I lived on campus, but one of the nicer areas that isn't where all the tourist are is Kaneohe, but that's across the island from Pearl Harbor. I thought there was a military base in Kaneohe though (not really sure).
Everything is really expensive there, but it's worth it, I think. :) I'm sure you'll love it!
@Boston Bee- that's awesome you got a chance to spend a semester ther! I would've had a hard time studying :) I have friends stationed at Kaneohe, they love it! I'm pretty sure she said we'd be at pearl harbor, but we haven't seen all the info yet so I'm not 100% sure
OMGOODNESS! Bella I told you to move to hawaii and you are! u need to come to oz for holiday :)
That is sooooo exciting!! Im happy for you girl. I think you will really love it.. and on a sidenote... to your friend being a bum. well...NERRR to her! she should be excited for you!
@ccrabetobe- I'm a complete wb nerd. When my husband called me and told me we would be moving to hawaii one of the first things I thought about was that you had told me I should move there! So funny. We both would LOVE to go to australia for a vacation!
Oh wow, how exciting, and it will be like you're on a permanent honeymoon for the next 3 years! LOL I've never been to Hawaii at all, but I have a friend who's husband was in the Army (he just died in Afghanistan on Christmas Day) and they previously lived in Hawaii and they LOVED it! So excited for you! :)
@belle AHHHH THAT IS SOOOO EXCITING :) :) :) :)
yayyyyy :D first a wedding now Hawaii??!! how lucky are YOU!!!
:D
I haven't lived there but my friend did and she LOVED it!!!!
I live on Maui, and Hawaii is a wonderful place to live - E Kipa Mai! (welcome!) It's incredible to live somewhere so beautiful and where the culture is a vibrant part of every day life. There are some drawbacks, though - it's super expensive for things like gas and groceries (although you can shop at the giganitc Navy Exchange, lucky girl!) and for me, it's hard being far away from family and friends on the mainland. I've lived here for six years, though, and despite the cost, the distance, and the creepy crawlies, we love it so much. When you're here, I really encourage you to try get to know people FROM Hawaii - I have been overwhelmed with people's generosity, both in terms of knowledge and kindness, and it has made my life here so much richer.
ps - living here is NOT like vacationing here. DH and I work 50+ hours per week each. We do get to spend some weekends at the beach, but we still have to clean the house, do errands, all the normal things that stress everyone else out on the weekends, too! and get ready for relatives looking for a vacation to appear out of the woodwork!
I guess it would be fun for only three years, but permanently living here is horrible. We are moving to LA, where believe it or not, things are much cheaper. (His family is from there.) Being military, you will have the benefit of not having to pay the expensive prices for the things that are most expensive, such as housing. (My understanding is that they adjust for the area...)
University of Hawaii has huge enrollment numbers right now. Nursing school is VERY hard to get into here and at Kapiolani Community College. But Hawaii Pacific University (a private school) has a bigger program so I think it's a little less competitive.
