I was suprised when it was done but I knew that it was coming.  My husband had the ring for about a year before we got engaged.

I knew it was coming eventually and guessed it would be on my bday weekend. He pulled a fast one on me and proposed a month before :) It was great though.

So I always joked to friends that FI would pick the worst timing possible to propose...because that's what he always does. It's funny really. A good example is that he randomly asked me to formally be his girlfriend on a boat on a river in Indiana one summer weekend with friends.

Anyways, last February was an awful month because there was a very real possibility that FI would be laid off. We made it through the month without a layoff and headed on a planned trip to Vegas with friends. FI proposed at dinner the second night we were there. I never saw it coming and it was a great surprise. Best part is that he did pick the worst (but also best) timing to propose!

I knew it was coming, I was with him when he bought the ring. I didn't know when at first, but he let the cat out of the bag with his comments about things that weekend.

Not really surprised at the timing of the proposal. We had already looked at rings before.. i kind of picked it out actually :) It was our 10 year anniversary when he proposed so i kind of thought he would then...

HOW he did it was a surprise though. He made a photo book of "us through the years"..pics of us from 10 years ago till now and when i went to each page he said a favorite memory at that time in our relationship. it was soo cute and the tears were flowing :)

Ummm I was not surprised that he proposed, or that he proposed in Mexico. I was a little surprised that he did it the first night, though. :)

Kind of.....we had looked rings and decided when we were going to get married. But the timing totally surprised me.

I knew we were going to get engaged but I didn't know when - I started to figure it out the morning of but even at that, I was still overwhelmed when he got down on one knee and pulled the ring out of his pocket...

Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised because we had made it clear we were heading in that direction and I had just moved and found a job where he was at and we had been dating a number of years.  But I was still surprised and was happy that I was surprised.  I guess he had dropped a few hints like 'you're sure you don't care about a ring' and talking about the future a lot more.  I just kinda thought he's seriously thinking about it.

I knew it was coming--he started acting fidgety. Plus, i knew it'd be within the 2 week time frame he got back from Iraq =]. Then we went and picked out the setting!

I knew it was coming but after so many "I wonder if" moments, I really tried to stop thinking about it.  I'll admit I had a fleeting "I wonder" moment as were driving to Red Rock Canyon for a hike, but shoved it aside because I didn't want to ruin the day.  Little did I know that was EXACTLY why we were going for a hike.

i was kind of suprised. i had no reason not to be, other than a gut feeling. we didn't talk about it, or go ring shopping, or talk about the ring or anything. he didn't talk me anywhere fancy. we went camping, with my family, which is normal and something i love doing. i think i was at the point where everything we did, i thought "this could be it!" but i tried to convince myself that it wasn't going to happen then because i was waiting for our dating year anniversary, and he tricked me, it happened to be on our anniversary of the day we met, which was a month before we started dating. so it was a bit of a surprise, and i was glad. i didn't want to know.

We knew we were getting married summer of 2010, but there wasn't a formal proposal at first. I tought he was going to propose in the summer, so I was totally surprise when he proposed on our 8 month anniversary while we were walking our dog.

We had very, very, VERY vaguely talked about “the future” but nothing about marriage. The proposal was a complete surprise, especially since he randomly proposed one Saturday morning while we were watching tv in bed!

I guess I would say yes and no to this question.  I knew that he would be proposing that weekend, because my sister spoiled the surprise.  She told me (as we were leaving for vacation) "next time I see you, you'll be engaged!"  Turns out he had told her ahead of time.  Oops!  As for the actual moment that he proposed, I was surprised.  I thought he would do it at a different location and a different time.

I had no idea that he had bought a ring, no idea he had spoken to my parents, no idea at all that it was coming. I thought maybe in 6 months or another year. I was floored--started to hyperventilate when I saw him on one knee :)

I knew it was coming, but didn't really know when.  I knew he bought the ring, and I picked the ring out.  And the way he proposed really was surprising, I had no idea he was so creative!

I knew it was coming, and had actually said to my friend (now MOH) "If I were a betting lady, I'd say 4th of July Weekend."  Sure enough ...

Also, he'd said to me earlier that day, "things aren't going to change after we get married, right?" Silly boy.

I had NO idea he had a ring, I had NO idea he intended to propose (though marriage had been talked about in passing), and I asked him while he was on one knee with the ring box open, "Are you joking?"

He snuck up on me while I was making the bed (after he asked me to help him, then went away) and I was grumbling about how he can't do anything without me, not even put a stupid blanket on the bed.

I can't believe he went through with it. I told him he loves it when I'm mad Wink

I was totally surprised. I knew it was coming sometime soon, and I kept asking for hints. He said I could ask one question and he would answer it if it didn't give the proposal away. I asked, "Do we have to go away for it?" and he said, "no." He ended up proposing on a trip we took, and afterward I said, "you said we didn't have to go away!" and he said, "well, we didn't leave our cabin, did we?" Sneaky dude!

But, I will say, when he said, "hey, I want to tell you something, can you sit down?" I knew immediately what was coming. Gut instinct.

We had looked at rings together for probably a month or 2 before hand and he knew what looked best on my finger, and had ideas, and knew that one day we would marry, but I wasn't pressuring it. I thought it might happen on my 30th bday, but instead he completely surprised me on July 2nd, our 4th dating anniversary...I was complete shocked and surprised and had NO clue. I knew we were going to dinner at the place we went on our 1st date, because I had suggested it, but the engagement was a good surprise! He bought the ring that morning, and had to wait all day long to propose.

jtsing: you were proposed to on my birthday!! how cool is that?!  maybe we'll share proposal dates?!  The next July 2nd is my 30th birthday so I'm really excited about that one....

@everyone else: i LOVE hearing/reading proposal stories... sigh how romantic?!

ETA i'm sure i'll be totally surprised by him!! of course i know we will be getting engaged, but i'm not sure when, where, or what the ring will look like. i have generalized ideas but nothing concrete.. i'd prefer to just have a friggin' agreement and start planning but i digress lol....

Yes! I wasn't involved in the buying of the ring nor did we discuss it a single time.  Which is exactly how I wanted it so luckily he did too (we didn't talk about not talking about it!)

Though I gave him ideas for rings and we had plans to move in together in June (I wasn't going to move in until we were engaged) I thought it was coming in May on our big graduation weekend. He surprised me a month early and I was utterly shocked!
