I’ve got 3 nephews to buy toys for this year: 7, 8, and 10
I’m very close to my 7 y.o. nephew, and all he wants are Cars-related racing kits and Lego stuff.
The 8 and 10 y.o. are DH’s nephews, and we are not close to them at all. In the past, I’ve gotten them gingerbread houses to decorate and those have been fun, but I’m at a loss this year. Make your own bubblegum kit? Make your own slime kit? Model airplanes? What to do, what to do…
Please chime in if you have any suggestions, or just list what you’re buying/what’s cool and for what age. Maybe we can help eachother out!
9 y.o. girl is getting Monster High dolls from her mom, my coworker. Kind of like less-slutty Bratz dolls.

We were only buying for a 10 year old girl (our daughter) – she asked for really random things, like a chair for her room, roller blades, and one of those awful ‘Dream Lites’ stuffed animals.
She’s really into space/dinosaurs and science things, and her male friends really liked some of the things she received last year – a mobile solar system kit, one of those volcano kits (who doesn’t like something that explodes?), dinosaur model kits. I think kids this age tend to really like things they can do – I’m 100% certain a make-your-own-slime kit would be appreciated among the kids that age in our neighborhood.

None of these are our kids
7 yr old boy-actually will be 7 on Christmas Day- Lego shaped digital clock, and Lego Karate set
5 yr old sister- Lego shaped digital clock- they both love Lego and this way no fighting- also their Mom wants them to have clocks so they can be told they can’t get out of bed until the clock says 6 something
2 yr old boy- play puppy that makes noise and movements
10 yr old girl- sewing kit, kids sewing project book, I am also gifting her my Vintage child’s sewing machine. It works by turning the flywheel- no electricity

@julies1949: That’s so cooooooool! Ditto about the Lego stuff. Who knew Legos were so cool again?
@kittyface: Thank you for the input. I’m definitely leaning toward something they can do that day–they are your typical video-game zombies and I like to get them interacting without the TV on if I can. Their mom and dad completely ignore them, so it’s kind of up to the rest of us to keep them entertained or they start wrestling and fighting.

I am buying for a 4 year-old and 1 year-old, so not exactly close to you, but I’m giving my 4 year-old nephew personalized puzzles with his name on them since he loves doing puzzles!
I also might get something small for my three little cousins that I have very close to, who are 5, 4, and 2. Dinosaur or science stuff in general is always good for little boys! You can always ask the parents what they are interested in or what they might like.

My nephew is getting books. He’s mixed race and it’s tough to find books for children his age (6/&) that feature a mixed race or black male lead characters. I want him to be excited about reading and it helps when the child can identify with the lead character. I found a really good series but since it features a girl she’s on the cover and I’m afraid he won’t read it because he will be teased for reading a “girl” book. I find it a little sad actually. Any tips or recs would be great!
My little sister (12) is getting Weezer CDs and a Weezer t-shirt. She finally discovered “good music” (her words) this year.
And that’s it for the kids in my family. Everyone else is an adult.

I have no idea what to get my 13-yr-old brother.

I have 13 children to buy for this year, our nephews and nieces plus 3 godchildren and the godchildren’s siblings! They’re all fairly young, but for the eldest, a 7yr old boy, I’ve got a mechano type set to make a racing car. He loves lego, so I figured something with proper nuts and bolts to put together would keep him occupied for a while (plus I loved mechano when I was his age!).

A friend of mine is divorce and has custody of their 12 year old son. She doesn’t make much income (40K). And she is always borrowing money from people but I’m pissed to find out shes buying him a freaking MacBook Pro for xmas! She and her ex spoil the kid because they’re trying to be the “cooler” parent its ridiculous! When he was 11 last year, he got the iPhone 5 for xmas from his dad and iPad from his mom. Simply ridiculous

Did you ask your DH, I think she should have some clue what his nephews like. Also don’t be afraid to call up the parents and run through some scenario.
Newphes I have three. One is 13, another 11, and the youngest six. I have on neice eight, plus Fi’s Neice who is a baby.
I am getting the 13 year old a vias gift card. My brother doesn’t like him having a lot of money in his hands. So I broke them into 4 25 dollar cards so his parents can control and dole them out to him.
12. Getting him Skateboard sneakers, because he wears his out extremely fast so even if he doesn’t need them now, I know he will in a couple of months.
9 year old Neice- Architectural to
2 year old Neice-clothing, books, arts and crafts stuff

FI has 3 cousins, all boys, ages, 4ish, 7ish, and 9ish. We got the little guy a Play-Doh Transformers set. The two older ones are OBSESSED with Lego, but we knew that FI’s siblings would be getting them Lego stuff so we went with an RC truck for the middle boy and a Perplexus Epic for the oldest. The Perplexus would have been a big hit if they didn’t already have one, unbeknownst to us 🙁 In previous years, we’ve purchased a year’s family membership to the local zoo or children’s museum and that’s been the one gift for all three.
