I'm not catholic but I partake in Lent just because lol I'm giving up being lazy when it comes to going to the gym! I really want to get in better shape (don't need to lose any weight just want more muscle :3)
I'm going to go to the gym, and giving up chocolate. I'm also going to try not to be lazy and just have Pizza on Fridays when we aren't supposed to eat meat lol
@MASPA: ooo tough!
@louisianablue: that's a good one. I gave up desserts last year - you can do it!
@Steampunk Angel: that is a great one too! i've been super lazy lately when it comes to going to the gym. I think its the cold weather - ok thats just an excuse...
I've thought about this one long and hard and have been mentally preparing myself for weeks but I am finally giving up smoking (I know its bad) so this will be the hardeset lent ever! its been a rough morning already haha.
@HisIrishPrincess: not eating meat on fridays (or today!) always slips my mind. I actually had to email my husband and remind him that turkey sandwhich he packed for lunch this morning should not be eaten! haha - that is something i need to pay more attention to as well.
@totheislnds: Congrats on your big commitment! I'll be sending you good vibes. I know it will be hard, but you can do it!
We're not Catholic, although we're Christians and we believe in the Lenten season of moderation and spiritual discipline. We're doing the same thing as Steampunk Angel and trying to go to the gym and get back into running. We got into running a couple of years ago, but I got a stress fracture in my foot and we had to stop for a while. We just haven't found the commitment to make it a regular thing since then, so that's what we're working on this season. :)
Diet Soda! I guess all soda, really, but I don't drink regular so I'm not really 'giving it up'. Hubby is giving up sweet tea.
i'm giving up bread and pastries and the likes....also trying to get to the gym and exercise more
I'm giving up regular soda. I'm seriously addicted to Dr Pepper and have betwen 1-3 sodas every day. So because I'm a b**** when I give it up totally (so my family tells me) I'm cutting back and only drinking diet Dr Pepper or Dr Pepper 10. It's going to be sooooo hard!!
Chocolate, mainly, and meat, but since I only recently left 14 years of vegetarianism that one doesn't really count cuz it's pretty easy. :)
I'm also reading The Screwtape Letters and (since TSL is pretty short) a book on the Hours... last year I started a goal of finishing a religious or spiritual book during Lent and I ended up loving it - it forced me to get through a good book I wouldn't have probably read otherwise (Thomas Merton's Seven Storey Mountain) and kept me a lot more mindful than I am by just giving something up!
@Gemstone: Thanks! it's going to be tough - my poor husband! haha. I've always wanted to get into running but i've never experience that runner's high yet. i try and work out and do a bunch of cardio but just straight running has always been difficult for me - one of these days i'll give it a serious go. I'd love to do a 5k before im 30.
@FloridaGatorBride: @Fall_In_Love22: my husband was a coke drinker - like 2 or 3 a day and he gave it up for lent last year and now he only drinks coke ever once in a while. it was a great change for him! - ooo sweet tea would be hard!
@BOGB: bread would be so difficult for me! but thats is exactly what lent is about - i have faith you can do it!
@farmergirl: I love the idea doing something to try and grow in your faith as opposed to giving something up. maybe i shoudl try and DO something too as well as give up something.
I am also giving up chocolate, DH is giving up coffee. It's going to be interesting in our house the next 40 days...!
I'm not giving up anything per se but I am trying to get rid of a bad habit, swearing, it's so unlady like for me. And sometimes I just sound like a sailor, it's awful.
I'm planning to give up sweet tarts. Doesn't sound like a lot but since I've been pregnant, I've been eating waaaay too many of them. I think it's probably a good idea if I cut back for a while :) I can't give up candy all together though because I just crave it too much!
@Mrs.Enne: chocolate and coffee!! that would be near impossible - but yet again...thats what lent is about.
@TopazWedding: i feel you! i curse like a sailor too - that one will be tough. but worth it. smoking, cursing...i may as well be a pirate.
@orvis18: I love sweet tarts!
@totheislnds: I have always loved that too but never could figure out how to do it ... promising to be "more positive" or "nicer to my sister" etc etc never worked for me, haha - I just couldn't remember to stay with it. It's so much easier to have something tangible (which I think is why giving something up works so well and I'll still do that). The book I only figured out because our rector mentioned that he does that last year in a sermon and I was like hmmm, now there's an idea!
I am going to give up my lazy ways and get back into running. I already gave up soda ( for the most part) and candy still from last year. Amazing to think I kicked my soda habit because of Lent! I am also going to try to be kinder to those around me. That is not a " giving up " but I think doing something as opposed to just giving up help keeps the mind on the real goal of the season. I have a habit of being in my own world and I need to engage and lift up those around me instead of being so focused inward.
Soda.
Ive been 2 weeks without it so far! Hopefully Lent will help me kick it for good!
Soda, stuffed pasta, eating out at restaurants, and using my credit card except for buying gas to keep it in use.
I'm also trying to pray a rosary a day and walk every day, even if it's just for five minutes.
And I'm going to go to church every Sunday because I'm a bad Catholic and skip Mass all the time.
I'm giving up "recreational" shopping --- meaning I can still make purchases for our home, the wedding and gifts. But no more "oooh that shirt is pretty/I want that lipgloss/need those shoes!" kind of shopping. This will probably be the hardest thing for me, I seriously shop almost every.single.day, but I think the savings will be significant and I need to be challenged by something :)
I'm going to take up going to the gym more instead of giving up something. So, maybe I've giving up laziness? I've actually been doing really well, so I guess it's more of a "keep up the good work" kinda thing.
From a religious point; how does 'going to the gym more often' match the spirit of lent, if lent is a time for "prayer, penance, sacrifice, and good works" in preparation of Easter? I'm not trying to be snarky, I'm just curious.
i'm giving up a few things. I'm giving up wine *TEAR*, going out to eat (expect for celebrations like Birthday's), and giving up 2 meals a day. Well big meals, We are only having a small portion or a supliment shake instead during those meals. We dont want to be unhealthy but it's a type of fasting for us.
@AprilJo2011: The priest at our parish said that Lent is a time to improve things, so he encouraged us to volunteer more, get more active (he actually said going to the gym to stay healthy) are other ways to look at Lent. He said that you usually give something up that's not healthy so why not add things that would be halthy for yourself or for your community.
SO and I are doing the same things for Lent to encourage each other :)
We are trying to get to the gym TOGETHER at least 4 times a week (I will be going 6 days a week)
We are packing our lunches every day, and eating better - no going out!
And finally we are going to Church EVERY week and not making excuses :)
I'm actually really excited for Lent :)
I’m giving up Facebook. I spend way too much time on it. I feel like FB allows me to judge others, and this is clearly not a Christian thing for me to do. So, I’m going to try my darndest to give up FB and replace that with extra faith based reading (currently reading the Christian Atheist = GREAT book so far)
I'm giving up shopping, stress and negativity, I'm going to try to be more positive and be a better person. Last year I gave up coffee and that was the hardest thing ever for me.
I'm not necessarily "giving up" anything for Lent, but I will be reading the daily Mass readings...so I guess I'm giving up time I'd play on the Internet. I'm already on a pretty strict diet and am TTC, so that rules out a LOT.

@JulesSchnooks: I tried to give up homework when I was a kid. For two weeks leading up to lent I pretended it was the best thing in the world. Then I gravely went to my parents on Mardi Gras and said, "I've given the matter a lot of thought. The thing I love most right now is homework, so I think I need to give it up for Lent." They laughed me out of the room.
I don't know why but your post dredged that memory up and it made me smile.
I forgot to add my FI is giving up sex, that's right sex! I'm gonna go crazy Ahhhhhh lol
I'm giving up the snooze button on my alarm clock. It may sound strange-but it is a bad vice of mine that makes me late, which turns me into a cranky and driving too fast of a person so I feel like it will have such a profound postive affect on the rush rush of my life :)
