I wanted a bride / groom topper, but couldn't find any I liked either. We are probably going with either nothing or maybe some flowers on top.
Birds...either Anne Wood ones or some mushroom bird (our cake is one of those bird and twig cakes)
We used my grandmother's cake topper. I found that I preferred the look of vintage bride and groom toppers over modern ones. This site is a good resource:

We are not having any "typical" topper. Our cake is going to have a fondant bow on top, to fit with our Christmas theme. The entire top layer is supposed to look like a present sitting on top.

We used this cake topper. We didn't know what to use, but since we were honeymooning in Paris, we ordered this online from a Parisian shop. I love it because now it's a keepsake-- we're hoping to convert it to a Christmas ornament!

Our topper will also not be traditional. I believe it will be fondant but it will be a painter's palette, paint brushes and two tubes of paint with one dripping to spell the 'R' on the side of the top tier.
We both love to paint so I thought it would be funky and cool to include this in our wedding and on the cake.
We are using a vintage cake topper too! My grandma offered to pay for the cake as long as we use the topper from her and my grandpa's wedding. I love the idea of a heirloom cake topper...I didn't even care if I liked it or not. Fortunately I love it!
Definitely ask some family members. It could even be a cousin's, sister's, etc. Good luck!
Our plan was just to put some fresh flowers on top of our cake. I gave our cake baker (a family friend) some flowers left over from our DIY bouquets. To my surprise, she chose to put a completely different flower on top, a pink gerber daisy..and pink was NOT one of our wedding colors. I was really bummed out when I saw the cake and the photos still make me a little mad. I loved the cake and the rest of it, but the top kind of disappointed me.
@Jessie - That stinks! There will be no pink at my wedding. :) (I hope!)
I am actually doing something a little different I am going to use a very small crystal bowl filled with flowers, I wanted a very simple vintage look for our cake. Whatever you pick Im sure will be perfect!
We are having mini rock hammers that I found on ebay... our topper will look pretty much like my user icon.
FI and I are both geologists, so it's perfect for us. 
I'm using this cake topper. I think it is gorgeous and goes with our tropical reception.

I'm always pinching my FH cute bum...we were browsing online and found a cute topper where the bride is pinching the groom's booty, so we bought it and will be using it on our cake.
we have a sweet little glass heart thingy that he got me for christmas in highschool, I never knew what to do with it but on the cake it goes!

I found this place "magic mud" and they make anything! My FI surfs and I dance so I was going to have this made, but he requested no cake toppers and I really just want fresh roses. But I want to share the custom place with all of you. They will make anything!

We used fresh flowers on our cake, but found a cake topper that we loved and had it placed on the table in front. Best of both worlds!

I thought about penguins, he loves them, but we're going with flowers and dragonflies
We are using our monogram. Our colors are black, white, an bright green so we will be using a simple painted black P on top of our cake.

Mine is a tiny sweetgrass basket (I'm from Charleston) with pears inside... the marzipan pears go all over the cake. I'm excited!
Other than that, I think a vintage cake topper would have been BEAUTIFUL!
I have a set of Anne Wood sweethearts! I looooooooove them. They are probably my favorite purchase.

Nothing! I am going to have a few flowers on the side, but nothing on the top. That's if we do a cake. I'm leaning towards a sweets table instead right now.
I didnt like the traditional toppers. I really like the roses.

I bought a precious moments cake topper which has nothing to do with anything else in our wedding but it was SOOOO cute and for ONCE my man LIKED something i picked out! lol I took the topper apart and repainted the little boy wearing a black tux with an aqua tie which is what our wedding colors are :)
