I definitely think you could get away with something in your hair. Hair flowers look amazing on everyone! I think you could also do an embellished head band too. I would avoid a tiara unless it is more like a headband style one, just because I think tiaras look a little dated nowadays. But honestly, don't be afraid to wear something cute in your hair. I think anybody can pull off a little something. I am not wearing a veil either simply because we are technically already married and this is just our big wedding with family and friends. I feel weird getting too traditional. Good luck to you!!
This is what I have - my theme is vintage and I'm not wearing a veil (I'm 40). I'm thinking a messy up-do with this hairpiece.

Oh I like what you are all wearing! I wouldn't go with a tiara unless it is really small and is more of a headband either it just seems to princessy to me.
I'm also thinking about a headband or just a flower (definitely no veil). I have short, wavy (read messy) hair, but I'm thinking I'll blow it out straight for the wedding (looks really cute when the hairdresser does it, I just don't have the patience). Have to see what it looks like with a headband, though.
Since FH is from Hawai'i, we're planning on getting leis for the wedding, and I also entertained the idea of wearing one of the leis that goes on your head (think it's called a haku lei?), but it seems a bit much. Although with short hair, it'd definitely work.
I wore a veil really low, under my updo, along with a flower... I didn't want the "innocent bride" look of a high veil, but I liked it as more of an accessory. Here you can just slightly see it ...

I will be 51 on our wedding day, and my kids are expecting me to wear a veil because I have never had a real wedding. I am also going to wear some pearl and crystal pins that my daughter has made for me. Wear something that you feel comfortable wearing. Don't let others' dictate your look. I got used to the veil idea after I tried a few on. It really completes my look.
@soon2beMrsGP: Love that headband!
@Ms_Smitten: I think you could get away with anything that isn't a tiara, really. I'll be a couple months shy of 30 by my wedding, and I think of them as little girly, dressup, something teen girls wear for thier quinceanera, high school prom queen, etc. (no offense to those who like them!). I love the romantic, elegant look of flowers in the hair- I'm going with that, minus the veil as well :)
i actually love tiaras but wont be wearing one. i will be 51 when i get married, and its my 2nd time around and wore the whole white dress and tiara the first time around. but i am stll wearing a killer champaigne gold dress, and as we are getting married in Turkey on the beach, i think a flower on the side, or maybe something like Lauren810c is wearing above. i like sparkley hair things, and it would match my brooch bouquet too.
@Ms_Smitten: I was 39 on our wedding day and wore a veil during the ceremony. I had two, beautiful mini-floral "blingy" hairclips in my hair as well that I purchased from an artist on Etsy.

I'll be exactly 41 +one week when we marry on 5.7.11 - i am wearing this feather clip w/out the birdcage for our reception.
Was a young 41 when I got married last summer! (still 41 too ;) )
Here's the back of my hair! Wore orchids.

As a fifty year old bride I knew I would feel silly in traditional bridal headgear so I went for something completely different!

I'll be 40 at the wedding too. Wear whatever looks best, and whatever you love. Try everything on if you can. I've gone back and forth between flowers, comb, birdcage and regular veil. I think I'm settling on birdcage, which was my first choice. I love them, and my dress is simple and elegant so I want a little something extra.
I love all the ideas everyone has posted... and you mentioned a headband. The headband soon2beMrsGP posted is gorgeous!
I am 31 and am going to be wearing this...

I would recommend going on Etsy and looking at their wedding hair accessories, here's their link

They have a large selection of different types of hair accessories!
I am/was 45 when we got married and I wore this in my hair. I made it myself.

Wow, how did I miss this group before?!! I just turned 41, so I'll be 42 and my FH, Mr. D will be 47 when we exchange vows but this will be our first (and only) wedding, so we're planning on all the bells & whistles, and a veil is part of that vision. Now reading everyone's comments I'm feeling like I may have made a poor decision, but I've already purchased.
My plan was veil with a pin-curl updo for the ceremony and half-updo, more romantic, relaxing style - minus the veil for the reception that follows. Possibly with flowers in my hair.
I would appreciate opinions from the Hive - thanks 40-Somethings!

I will be 40 when we get married and I am iffy about wearing a tiara or other bridal hair accessories because of my age. I am definitely not wearing a veil. What is everyone doing with their hair? Mine is chin length and I wear hair bands well but I don't know...
