I kept thinking of how fat my arms would look in the wedding photos.  Worked every time πŸ™‚

This might sound kind of silly…but I pick a female role model who has like really killer abs and looks awesome in everything and that I want to look like. Every time I don’t want to go to the gym, I’ll think “don’t you want to look like that? clearly she had to work hard for that body, so you’re not just going to wake up one morning and look that way!” and that motivates me.

It also works when you’re at the gym, think of the same thing when you’re on the treadmill or doing weights πŸ˜‰

Honestly?  Pay for it.

If you pay for a traning session, pilates, yoga etc, you’re more likely to go over just going to the gym on your monthly membership.

definitely buy a package of classes for training or yoga etc…that way once the money is spent you are committed.  Also dont over do it…thats one of the quickest ways to get turned off from working out.

Aim for something.  Usually I will sign up for a race and that’s my motivation.   Speaking of which, I really should sign up for another one πŸ™‚

Thanks for this post ottawa, I too used to play a lot of organized team sports and now I lack the motivation to go to the gym.  I have my gym stuff in the car today and I’ve been having an internal arguement with myself all day about going to the gym after work.

I keep a workout journal that keeps me on my toes. If I don’t work out, I have to state why. After a while, seeing “too lazy” or “too tired” makes me realize that I have dumb excuses to not work out.

I go to the gym with my fiance, and due to carpooling, if one of us doesn’t go, we both don’t go. And it’s a rare day when we’re both feeling like slugs, so one of us will usually convince the other to go. Maybe you could find a gym buddy!

@ottawa: So glad you posted this, because motivation is my weak spot!  But, recently, 3 tips have kept me going: You just implemented my motivation tip with DaisyBride!

I try to get a better motivated buddy to go to the gym with…my clothes are also in the car & my gym buddy will be waiting for me around 5pm.  If I don’t show up, I have to give her a reason & it better be GOOD…it’s so much harder to explain to someone else, who is counting on you, why you’re bailing on going.

Another tip (one I’ve picked up in another thread on this board – Calling all fitness brides – DAILY CHECKIN): having accountabilibuddies – people who you “check in with” about your workout, your diet, your temptations (ones you give in to & stand up to)…these buddies keep you motivated two ways: you’re supposed to check in with them, so you want to DO something (feel obligated to have something to report or just need contact so you’re not procrastinating), and they give you feedback & encouragement both when you’re doing good & when you slip up.

tip is my “silver lining” take on a rather BAD comment from Kate Moss…”Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.”  Moss’ intention was not good, but there’s a kernel of truth in her statement: like hellohellohello & Tingting, the ultimate reward is looking good & there’s nothing out there that tastes as good as you FEEL when you KNOW you look STUNNING!

Thank you so much for posting this!!! I have been totally slacking with my workouts AND eating ughhhh. I am almost to the 5 month mark and I am not making as much progess (if any) as I wanted πŸ™

I started the DAILY CHECK-IN post to help keep all of us motivated and that REALLY helps!!!

Another HUGE motivator is my heart rate monitor! If I wear it throughout the day, I set the amount of calories that I want to burn and I don’t go to sleep until I burn them all (which means going to the gym)…it has been a tremendous help! I have even come home from the gym and done a workout video as well to burn the extra 100 calories or so.
