Today while driving down the highway, and following a hearse, I kept thinking “What if they hit a bump, the back door flips open, the coffin comes flying out, opens up and I have a corpse on my hood!” Now, I know that it would never happen, I’m assuming that it is pretty impossible for that to happen, but I always think of it.
I also had a discussion with the SO over the weekend. I told him I wanted to shower, but since it was thunderstorming I would wait. I explained that I don’t like showering in storms because if I don’t want to get electrocuted in the shower from lightning! I know enough science to know that it is not even possible, but I still refuse to shower in a thunderstorm because of this irrational fear I have!
So bees, what are you irrational fears? Hearing yours will help me feel a little bit less crazy.

I HATE character people, like people dressed in mascot/holiday costumes. I can’t stand going to the mall during Easter and Christmas! Taking my kids to Disney World in the future is going to be torture 🙁

When I was little I had an irrational fear that somehow I was going to bang my kneecaps and dislocate them in some sort of accident.. closing car doors were the worst (I had to watch the corners of the door so they wouldn’t “hit my kneecaps” when I closed them). Not really sure where it developed from. Obviously this fear has subsided greatly. But my SO every now and then does this thing where he puts his hand around me kneecap and squeezes and I’m immediately like “Can you please not do that??” lol.

I have irrational fears of tripping and knocking all my teeth out on a sidewalk. I am certain this almost fully stems from the ‘American History X’ curb stomp scene. :S

Being attacked by malevolent bugs (spiders, ants, any creepy crawlies). Whenever a bug gets close to me I have this creepy feeling like they’re all over me.
People say, ‘they’re more scared of you than you are of them.’ My response is, ‘I wouldn’t bet on that.’

This made me LOL for real. 🙂

I am completely irrationally afraid of the dark (not so much the dark itself but the potential of an intruder in the house/being attacked/etc.). I have many other things that I have a more minor fear of (like knocking out teeth, bugs, driving behind logging trucks), but the dark thing is definitely the worst/most annoying.

Clowns and bees. *shudders*

Mine is roaches. I CANNOT stand them. I grew up in a part of the country where they were huge, flying, and everywhere. I *never* got used to it. It took me 15 years to be able to see one without screaming. I know that they don’t bite, aren’t poisonous, can’t hurt me…but something about the way they move just triggers my lizard brain and I freak the fuck out.
One reason why I never want to move back to the Gulf Coast.

@T-Rex: my mom put that fear into me of not using the water during a thunderstorm
i refuse to use the weedwacker/trimmer thing b/c i’m afraid it’s going to cut my ankles if it gets too close to me.

I have a totally irrational fear of bridges. And it really isn’t the bridge or the height, it’s the fear of the bridge collapsing, getting trapped in my car and drowning. I have the little tool that will knock out the glass, cut your searbelt and is a flashlight all in one.
And the dark. I hate the dark. Always have, always will. It’s gotten better since Fiance and I have lived together, I don’t have to have a light on except when he’s away.

Water. I used to think it was just water I couldn’t see through but then when I was in a pool and swimming around all I could think was something was in the water and going to get me. I cannot explain it. In my head there is a real threat of being attacked by a shark, alligator or even Nessie in a pool.

Drowning in a confined space!

@mightywombat: I live in FL, I have all my life, and still can’t stand the sight of a roach. I’ll take a room full of spiders before a roach. I figure if it can survive a nuclear blast, I don’t stand a chance of actually killing it and it needs to stay the eff away from me.
Did you ever read Franz Kafka’s “Metamorphosis”? I still have nightmares about it.

@mightywombat: OH my gosh the giant roaches…. I loathe them.
My most irrational fear is fish. Not like on a plate or in a fish tank. But in the ocean or lake. And as long as I can’t see them or they don’t touch me I’m fine. I went snorkling in Cancun a few years ago and there was a 6′ barracuda about 100 yards away, no panic. A few dozen zebra fish in a school swimming around us and I nearly had a full on panic attack, which by the way is extra scary when you can only breath through a little tube.
