The regular ones.... wonderful world, i loved her first, my little girl..etc are all great, thats why they are traditions! But I love hearing the creative or special meaning songs girls choose. Big into music and haven't decided on my song yet- Give me your ideas!
I haven't discussed it with my dad yet, but I'm thinking of doing Lean on Me. I've never felt like the "daddy's little girl" type, though my dad has always been a great source of support for me in a lot of ways. Which, feels like a good reason to pick the song. :-)
We did Phil Collins "you'll be in my heart" from Disney's Tarzan. It just seemed perfect for us and it was!
joan armatrading, willow. here's a link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=520ZLkzKRII
we used to listen to a lot of joan armatrading in my house when i was growing up. here are the lyrics: I may not be your best
But you know good ones
Don't come by the score
If you've got something missing
I'll help you look
You can be sure
And if you want to be alone
Or someone to share a laugh
Whatever you want to do
All you got to do is ask
Thunder
Don't go under the sheets
Lightning
Under a tree
In the rain and snow
I'll be your fireside
Come running to me
When things get out of hand
Running to me
When it's more than you can stand
I said I'm strong
Straight
Willing
To be a shelter
In a storm
Your willow
Oh willow
When the sun is out
A fight with your best girl
Prettiest thing you ever saw
You know I'll listen
Try to get a message to her
And if it's money you want
Or trouble halved
Whatever you want me to do
All you got to do is ask
I said I'm strong
Straight
Willing
To be a shelter
In a storm
Your willow
Oh willow
When the sun is out
We're using "Daughter" by Loudin Wainwright. Even though it is clearly about daughters, I think it's pretty non-traditional!
@judithsr: very cool! I love when the song has a meaning behind it :)
@s_h_e_l_b_s: thats a cute one!! Don't see my rough around the edges farmer dad going for that but i think its way cute!
@MrsE.ToBe : I'll listen to that - never heard of them but im thinking about doing something like that. Not typical wedding music, but dad & I listened to a lot of The Eagles, Neil Diamond & Jim Croche lol
@Melissa.erin: It sounds like you and your dad have some good musical connections there. :-) I'd imagine there would be a nice Eagles, or Neil Diamond, or Jim Croche song that would be meaningful to you and your dad. And that's what's most important :-D
I'm thinking about doing "when you say nothing at all" by Allison Krauss.
My dad is a man of few words. I also used to steal this CD from him all the time! I haven't decided yet because it's a romantic song. Well, it's supposed to be but I'm hoping it can pass for not...
What about "Thank You" by Led Zeppelin?
Even though I'm still waiting, I'm planning on doing Dancing Queen by ABBA. It's just something my dad and I always have fun dancing to for every family occasion, and I really like the idea of just busting a move with my pop. :)
we're dancing to "i just called to say i love you" by stevie wonder
when i was little, i used to call him and sing it to him everyday on the phone :)
We did "You are the sunshine of my life". Aint no mountian high enough was the runner up
My father passed away when I was very young.
I have a special relationship with my FIL so I asked him to dance the Father/Daughter dance with me,
We danced to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It's one of his favorite songs. :) I made him a CD of it and it's always in his car. :)
@Melissa.erin: My dad and I listed to the same kind of music!
I think we'll dance to "Something in the Way She Moves" by James Taylor - my dad plays the guitar and learned a different new song for me and my brothers when we were born, and he learned that one for me!
But I also love "My Girl" by the Temptations, and my first dance with my husband will be "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green, so I think that might flow a little better.
Just depends what moves me the day of our wedding, I guess :)
My dad and I will dance to Walk with You by Edwin McCain
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LBUMnQgSTs&feature=related
The lyrics fit us perfectly because I used to ride horses and we went to the beach all the time. It's like it was written about us. I cry every time I listen to it...
I think I posted this on another thread but I think I'm going with Cleaning This Gun (Come On In Boy) by Rodney Atkins.
It's definitely non-traditional and it screams "THIS IS MY DAD." Haha.
Cat Stevens "Hard Headed Woman"
My daddy and I both love that song/artist and its a good song for us I think.
@MrsMaine:my mom has requested our band play "my wish" as a dedication song so she doesn't feel like she needs to give a toast. i keep hearing it on the radio in my car and i know i'm not going to be able to stop myself from bawling! such powerful lyrics...
I just LOVE Paul Simon's Father & Daughter.
This video is cheesy, but it's the right song:
I'm not having a father daughter dance, but if I did I always figured it would be "forever young" by Rod Stewart.
I've never once come across this at a wedding, or on any first dance lists which is odd because if you read the lyrics it sounds like it was written for this situation.
I'm not a daddy's little girl so the usual songs just make me want to puke. I think this song also represents my relationship with my dad as an adult woman. Plus, I like Rod Stewart (secretly).
@BackyardLoveBird:Great choice!! My parents used that song while they did their unity candle :)
We are doing "Edelweiss" from Sound of Music...very non-traditional.
I'm planning on "That's How Strong My Love Is" by Otis Redding. I'll probably be bawling the whole time.
My Dad and I are dancing to "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder. We both love to dance and he is such a great dancer. I can't wait to get out there and have him spin me around!
We're doing "Layla" by Eric Clapton, the unplugged version. My dad did his damnedest to convince my mother to name me Layla. Well, that didn't exactly work out. However, not to be defeated, he's blasted Layla through the stereo at least once a week since I was born. He still plays it on special occasions, and we sing and smirk at my momma.
So, it was kind of the obvious choice when it came time to pick!
Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I grew up listening to classic rock with my dad and Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of the two concerts I have been to with my dad. Fits our relationship perfectly.
"My Guy" by Mary Wells...except it's a recording of me singing the song when I was 7 years old for my dad. It's a little off key, but I think it will be nice.
My Joy by Christette Michelle. Oh, I have not made it through the song without crying! It is beautiful :-)
I didn't want a totally sappy song and we combined the mother/son and father/daughter dance so it had to work for both. We used "Sunshine of my Life" by stevie wonder. I liked that it was fun and not a cry fest.
I'm thinking of doing "Ordinary Miracle" by Sarah McLachlan. It's not an obvious father/daughter song, but it's such a lovely lovely song and Dad's a huge Sarah fan.
My name has a hugely famous movie and waltz tied to it (can we say 1960's think cold russian front/revolution) but .. a waltz? with my dad? he taught me to formal dance but we haven't mastered the waltz.
@MrsCajun: my dad tried so hard to get my mom to name me Aubry. That could be an idea .. thanks
We MIGHT do "Forever Young" by Bob Dylan. It was recently in a Pepsi commercial. I loved "Daughter in the Water" but my dad is a big music man - especially 70s rock - and he wasn't feeling it :( I'd love something by Led Zep or something like that... This is where we are for now:http://vodpod.com/watch/480038-bob-dylan-forever-youngfrom-the-last-waltz
These are great songs!! @jennab503 I love that you are going to bust a move with your dad.. so cute.
Jim Croce wrote "Time in a bottle" for the birth of his first child.... it is so very pretty
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x477kn_jim-croce-time-in-a-bottle-1972_music
I like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" so much ... I might steal that idea. My fiance and I hired a boutique DJ firm and we're going for a 60's soul night feel with some 70's glam thrown in and the Marvin Gaye version would be so awesome!
Sigh.
I looove daughter by loudon wainwright. I am also thinking of gracie by ben folds.
I don't like country, annnnd I like things non-traditional too.
