We're in the process of making our list of baby names and I'm wondering if there are any names (girl or boy) you're noticing friends choosing that have you thinking "enough already!". In my office this year five ladies have named their baby Sophia. Even less traditional names picked to be unique seem to be showing up on multiple birth announcements lately. I tend to like more traditional names, but would rather my child didn't have the same name as three other kids in the class (my own name was very common for my age group...even to this day it's annoying that I can't just go by my first name at work because there are so many of us.)
Boys: Aiden (and any forms of that), Ashton, Austin, Collin, Hunter, Jonah, Josiah, (names that are similar to that), Logan, Breydon, Jackson, Jacob, Noah, Liam, Kayson, Caden, Carson, Jayden, Ephraim
Girls: Chloe, (Isa)Bella, Kaylee, Ashley, Aubrey/Audrey, Elizabeth, Abigail, Ella, Addison/Adelaide, Amelia/Mia (thank princess diaries), Genevieve, Grace, Lily, Avery, Lucy, Natalie, Peyton
I keep thinking of them, I'll add them.
Also, I don't like it when people make funky spellings of names to make it look cool, i.e. "Jaxson" or "Ashtyn" or "Austyn"
Boys:
Aiden
Cameron
Josh
Colin
Austin
Girls:
Emma/Emily
Sophia, like you said :)
Olivia
As a teacher it gets REALLY confusing. It's funny though when there are multiple kids with the same name because then the kids just saying things like, "want to play with me Emma N?" That's what teachers do to tell them apart when calling on them and the kids pick up on it and it's SO funny to hear them say that!
Madison, McKenzie, Kayla, or anything in that camp. But I always thought they were stupid names so I guess I'm not over them.
I am over Emma and Ava though.
@piglet_625: Yeah, Olivia and Emma are SOOO popular right now. As is Hannah or forms of it.
I love the name Madison, but it's overused and I'd prefer it if my children didn't have kids in their class with the same names.
I've noticed Bridget and Riley making a comeback and getting more popular too. And I've had boys and girls named Riley in class.
Growing up with the name Ashley and name Nicole I have about about 3 close girlfriends with that exact name and my other best friend is Nicole Ashley I am over those two names! O also Giana and Bella
Girl: Olivia, Sophia, Emma/Emily, Isabella, Madison, Madeline, Abigail.... I'm actually really sad that Audrey is getting so popular. That was my mother's name and I would have liked to use it if I ever have a daughter.
Boy: Aiden for sure.. and Jayden and Brayden... and Kaden. and Hayden. OMG! Also I feel like Noah, Elijah and Gabriel and all the other names like that are overused right now.
I really love the name Emma and have always wanted to name my kid that, so I'm hoping people get "over it" very soon so I can use it without worrying that 12 other kids in her class will have her name!
I was upset when I saw the middle name we like was on the top 10 most popular list. But then I thought "Screw it." I like that name darnit! LOL
When I'm getting ready to name my kids I am definitely NOT going to use any name that has appeared on the top 100 names list for the last 5 years. Preferably not the top 200, but we'll see.
@CorgiTales: Same here, I'm going to try at least but I may end up like MightySapphire and use it as a middle name.
Ella. Cute name, really getting worn out.
Emmy/ Emily/ Emma.
Sophie/ Sophia- wonderful name, too popular right now.
Kaitlin/ Kayla/ Kailyn/ Caitlin (etc.). Here in the midwest, I know at least 50 people with some variation of this name, and -I never know (or can tell) what exact version it is when they introduce themselves.
McKenzie. I just think pizza from Montana.
Sara. Beautiful name, but growing up in MW, there were about 30 people named Sara in every graduating class.
On a side note, I know about 500 dogs named "Bella." (I worked at a dog daycare.)
Boys: Ayden, Zachary, Gavin, Bryson, Mason, Logan, Tristan, and Peyton
Girls: Reagan, Peyton, Hannah, Bella, Faith, Hope, Kaylan, and Chloe.
I don't have anything against these names they are just over used.
Even though Olivia is over used I LOVE that name and plan on naming my little girl Olivia Estelle (Estelle after my great grandmother) and we are going to call her Stella (if we ever have a little girl :) )
@Cberry687: I think of Estelle Getty!!! I love the name Estelle. I like the names Olivia and Liam/Ephraim. Luckily, there are other names I like as well that people haven't figured out yet.
Cody, Logan, Hunter, Tyler, Ashley, Brittnay, Jasmine, Mikayla, Kayle, Kylie, Colton, Mylie, McKenna, McKenzie....Jayden, Brayden, Conner.....I'm sure there are more.
I am liking the more old-fashioned names like Ruby, Violet, Abigail...but I am sure those will get overused soon, like Sophia.
TAYLOR. Make it stop! Make it stop!
I was over most of these names before they even began!
What's wrong with good ol' "Jennifer" or "Mark" or "Michelle" or "Jack"?!?
I would have to say Bella, this came from the Twighlight craze...I have heard of several naming their little girls this, and a little off topic, but also their animals..BARF!
@MrTapenade: You're so right about Taylor! As for Jennifer, it was definitely one of the most popular names when I was born. There were five Jens in every class when I was growing up. Because of that, I will not use it.
Isabella/Bella, Michaela, Olivia, Hayden, Madeline/Madison (basically any name that is given so the nickname Maddie can be used). I think a lot of women think these names are original and beautiful, not realizing that OUR mothers thought that when they were naming us Ashley/Nicole/Katie/Jessica/Jennifer in the 80s and then those ended up being the most common names of the decade.
For boys, I'm not tired of any particular name EXCEPT any of the -ayden ones. They're too cutesy. I don't have a son, but if I did, I would hate for him to have to grow up and introduce himself as a serious contender in the business world as, "Hi, I'm Kayden!!"
Sophie/Sophia
Emma, Emily
Ava
Gabriel
Aaron
Jacob
Edward
Down in the south, I really don't see that many Olivia's or the other names that I like. As far as boys, Hunter seems to be the big one. Of coure, FH and I aren't planning to have kids, but we have picked out a few names just in case. Hopefully there won't be 30 kids with the same name.
I think the latest girl trend was naming your daughter with a name ending with a vowel to make it more feminine. Emily became Emma, Olive became Olivia, Isabelle (Belle) became Isabella (Bella) etc. I didn't actively try to avoid the Top 10, but I was happy MB's name wasn't on it this year.
So sad... My great grandmother's name is Sophia (she's 94) and I wanted to name my first girl (after her, and hopefully while she's still alive) Sophia but I CAN NOT bring myself to do it because it too popular right now. =-( Maybe I’ll have to settle for it to be a middle name.
I also agree with the “ADEN†names for boys. Luckily, we have a boy’s name we like and it’s not on the top 100 at all! =-)
Oh my gosh! I am so over Madison!
No, really! It's been my name for, oh, 23 years, and nowadays there's a bajillion little 5,6,7 years olds with the same name!
I'm not gonna lie, it's kind of obnoxious! And, hey, at risk of sounding like those 7 year olds, I was here first
!
Ugh...so the weird thing is all of my college friends (who happen to be all living in the more suburbia type areas) over use boys names like Asher, and Colton and Cohen. Bleh.
Here in urban-Boston...the overused names are Miles, Oscar and Oliver
I personally think the mis-spelling of Kaylee is over done.
The proper way to spell it ( and only way IMO) is Kailey. I'm a bit bias though.
I am over name that cam from the 90s. Ben, Brian, Matt, Robert... Marissa, Lynsday, Linda, Sarah...
I like names that are unique.. like places you've been.
I plan on naming my daughter, and hopefully only daughter, Hanalei (after my favorite place in the entire world) Susanna (Susan is my mother-in-laws name, and my mothers middle name) Santos (New last name come Aug 27, 2011.
As for boys... i'll let him decide. ;D
Where do I start!
Boys: Aiden and anything that rhymes with it, Carter, Mason, Jordan, Aaron, Taylor, Hunter, Payton, Logan, Jacob, Joshua, Noah, and Eli. I'm sure there are more...
Girls: Madison, Addison, Emma (even though I used to really like the name), Emily, Natalie, Hannah, Ashley, Hayley, Lillian, Morgan, Sydney, Aubrey, Mya and Mia.
In the midwest we hear a lot of: Brittany (or any variation of it), Lindsay, Emily, Sarah.
Boys. . . I never really paid much attention to which ones were overused.
I always loved the fact that my name was "Amber". I never had kids my age with my name, and I loved it. I always felt bad for the 5-6 girls who had the same names in school. It would have to be super annoying!
I agree with the other teacher's comment. As teachers we no longer can use your child's first name (as it is too confusing with multiples). They become "First Name and Last Initial".... for example: Brittany A., Brittany K., and Brittany S. Poor things!
I'm going to say the boy names with "den" on the end (Brayden, Aiden, Cayden, etc..) but that's probably because my sister used to love them and it was when she was going through a bad phase.
As for girl's: I think Sophia is pretty, but I know sooo many people with kids named Sophia.
My husband and I talk about names every now and again (I keep a list in my email) it's interesting to see the phases we've gone through. I think we've gotten it down to a few we really love and I've noticed they are all fairly simple.
I'm so glad nobody said Brooklyn.. lol
That's my daughters name and I thought I was being so cool and unique when I chose it, but it has become so common it makes me sick =(
I agree...anything that rhymes with Aiden is way overdone.
And for girls, Isabella, Ava, Madison
My sister's Best Friend is from HI and she has a one year old baby named Hanalei!
You also reminded me- the name Lindsey. Everyone is named Lindsey. It is like I can't even hear the word, it is so everywhere (no offense friends named Lindsey!)
Madison!! And Addison. And any variation of them and pretty much anything ending in -son or -an, girl or boy. Anything that starts with a Mc., like McKenna or McKenzie or McKayla. Any variation of Kayla, Kaylee, Caitlin, those are so dated now IMO. I can't stand that my own name (Lori) is so dated. If you meet someone named Lori you can pretty much peg them as being born in late 60's and 70's. I wish I had a more classic, timeless name.
BOys: Aiden, Hunter, Skyler, Jayden
Girls: Makayla, Madison, Isabelle, Isabella, Alice (OMG Twilight fans are giving birth) Nevaeh (Liek OMG it's heaven spelled backwards!) Taylor, Kaycee, Kaci, Kacey, Casey, Casie, or whatever else crazy spelling. Ava.
I'm glad my name and my daughters name is not popular. My name is Adia (uh-dee-uh) I have never met another. That stupid Sarah Mc. song Adia (a-dee-ah) has people thinking my name is that. Nope. My daughter's name is Davina. Haven't met another one.
I've always loved the name Isabella for a girl but damn the Twilight crazy for making it popular. I liked it because it could be shorted to Izzy rather than Bella.
Eh, I guess I'll have to see if I like anything better.
I'll try not to repeat what anyone else has said, or the "top ten" but here's a list of names I hear over and over in my neck of the woods:
GIRLS: Addison, Astrid, Aubrey, Autumn, Beatrice, Brooklyn, Carrington*, Cassidy, Celia/Cecelia, Charlotte, Clara, Delilah/Lila, Evelyn, Finley, Francesca, Grace, Greer, Josephine, Logan, Louisa, Mabel*, Matilda, Olive (I love this name, so it pains me), Quinn, Piper, Reese, Riley, Sailor*, Sawyer (yup, for a girl), Stella, Violet, Yeardley*
BOYS: Baxter*, Caleb, Calvin (Cal), Gavin, Griffin, Greyson, Jack/Jackson, Jasper, Keegan*, Harrison, Henry, Leo, Liam, Lucas, Max, Noah, Oliver, Oscar, Owen, Parker, Sebastian, Sawyer (also for boys), Tate, William, Wyatt
...Basically, just looking at the lists, it seems like some of the big trends are anything that is more antique, like your grandparents' names (Henry, William, Clara, Louisa, Evelyn, Grace); surnames and unisex names (especially for girls), and for guys a lot of names that strike me as sort of "manly-man" old Western names (Owen, Jack, Wyatt, Griffin, Henry-->Hank, Harrison, Sawyer). And I also think we're seeing a lot of riffs off of old favorites: Haydon instead of Hayley; Lindley instead of Lindsey...
((*)=I know the parents in these cases and the names were chosen b/c they thought they were original, only to meet another child with the same name elsewhere in their social circles!)
Every single person I know that has had a boy in the last 18 months has named him Noah. True story, I kid you not.
