Just out of curiosity, what belief/religion do you consider yourself to have? And what about your SO? Choose the option from the poll and list your denomination, if any, below. I apologise if I have left any out, I have put in an 'other - please state' option in the poll.

I will start - I am a die-hard athiest, with my SO being a deist. But my family and my upbringing are Hindu, whilst his is Christian. It makes for some very interesting discussions!

@meow402: Ah, see. Some people consider that a branch of Christianity, but would you rather I left it a separate option? I probably should...

    EDIT: Done :)

I'm Agnostic (formerly Baptist) and DH is an Atheist (formerly Catholic).

@NehaPrasad92: Catholic and Christian are 2 different things, you need different poll options.

@zippylef: Yup, just made the two poll options! Thanks for the information, I was always unsure on that, some people consider them the same thing whilst others consider them different.

Both FI and I are atheists. He was raised Catholic and all of his family (except one of his brother) is very religious. He stopped going to church during high school. I was raised Christian, in the United Church of Christ church. I actually really liked the experience I had - I was involved in youth group, mission trips, and other volunteer activities. I love how open the UCC church is. Ultimately, after lots of research into other religious and lots and lots of reading, I decided that my beliefs boil down to atheism.

I am technically Protestant, which I believe is a form of Christianity, I was raised as such and my parents attend a Protestant Church. If people ask then I will say I am Protestant.

For this poll I voted other because while I believe in God I do not believe in religion and church and never attend services. SO is Catholic.

Wonderful to hear from fellow Atheists. I'm lucky my parents are ok with it (kind of) but I definitely could NOT tell other family members about it... I know SO's mum is a little iffy and doesn't like me being atheist (she didn't find out until a few weeks ago) but I think she's over it now.

@newenglandgirl: That would be a Deist then. My SO is a Deist - he does not believe in religion or worship, but he does believe in the existence of a higher power/God.

    I'm essentially agnostic.

But, I always joke that I'm a "rational empiricist" - I'm looking for proof before I believe (or don't believe) anything.

Agnostic! However agnostics and atheists are very very different things.

(I was raised from my grandmother with Christian backgrounds and my mother with Wiccan backgrounds)

I am Lutheran (I chose Christian).  Although, I don't got to church anymore.  I grew up going to church, surprisingly on my own.  My family stopped going when I was young, I continued to go until I got to college.

@LemonLavender: Haha, that makes complete sense and is probably one of the more 'rational' choices. Empirical evidence always makes for a strong case...

@HappilyEverAfter54: I do understand they are, but I didn't know you could make more poll options until later...

For people who have converted to other beliefs/religions here - what prompted you to adopt that belief system/religion? For me, it was when I started questioning why I was saying my prayers, WHY I had to go to these religious functions... I found out that the more questions I asked, the fewer answers people had. I then read up more on atheism, and genuinely felt more 'at peace' with myself, having found the belief system that I consider the most compelling for me personally. Since then I have been a die-hard atheist, to put it one way haha.

I think I always questioned my grandmothers faith from the start but my mother taught me a ton about Wicca and natural living so what she believed made a lot of sense... I really respect it but I can't stick to it I guess...

I think theres something out there but I can't prove it and neither can anyone else so I just kind of fell into the agnostic group.

    I went with 'Other'

I wasn't raised as anything (we never went to church or talked about religion) but when asked, my mom would say she is a Christian.

For me- I think Jesus was a pretty cool dude. And I think the principles of Christianity are pretty awesome. But if you get down to the deets of other religions, they are all very similar. (Be a good person, essentially).

I also celebrate Christian holidays (Christmas, Easter) and feel the emotions of what they mean and represent religiously.

That said, I am not positive there is a God, but am pretty sure, so I am sort of agnostic too.

FI is Buddhist. He's even bald (haha, but not because he's Buddhist. He just thinks it's easier than maintaining hair).

DH and I are both Lutheran, specifically WELS which is a pretty conservative group. DH grew up WELS and I was a part of a non-denom church growing up. Faith, religion, church etc are all very important things to us.

DH and I were both raised Catholic but now I’m atheist and he’s agnostic. He says that the only reason why he’s not atheist is because he’s “too much of a pussy to admit that there’s no higher power”. Lol

@jillmatt: That's actually really interesting! I don't know what it's like being raised in a non-religious family (mum and dad and the whole family on my end are very devout Hindus... for the most part lol).

@HappilyEverAfter54: That makes sense. I'm not very well informed on the Wiccan way of life (saddening really, I like to know about these things) and I've honestly never met someone with a Wiccan background until today.

@zippylef:  Catholic and Christian are definitely NOT two different things.  They're different branches of the same religion, but, for example, Catholicism is *much* more closely related to Lutheranism or Anglicanism than Lutheranism or Anglicanism are to Baptists or Calvinists.

FI doesn't believe in God whatsoever.  He thinks a big joke.

I was raised Lutheran (ELCA) as was my husband. I guess I still consider myself a Lutheran although I don't go to church or anything.

Honestly my belief is that there IS a god, but that not a single person on earth understands him. I think all of our religions are trying, and they are probably all failing. And I don't honestly think that he cares what you are, or if you follow some rule about what to eat or what to wear or who to sleep with. I think that whats important is being a kind and generous person. The rest is all details.

I don't practice any religion at the moment.  I was raised Catholic, but I was never confirmed because I missed an hour of community service when I was in elementary school. The only way I could be confirmed was to take all 5+ years of CCD classes over again, or wait until I was 18 and take a year of adult CCD classes.   I never really felt connected to being Catholic so I didn't end up doing the classes and getting confirmed.  I'm definitely spiritual, I believe there's some higher power out there, I just don't know exactly what it is.  The religion I've felt the most connected to would be Wicca.

@MissPumpkinPie: A deist is a person who believes in the presence of a higher power, but does not hold affiliation to a religion or something similar.

@CorgiTales: I like that mindset. That's the same type of mindset my mother holds - even though she is a Hindu. She thinks God is more appreciative of a good person who has done good deeds than someone who follows a certain rule, or someone who does X but not Y, etc.

@GreenEyedMoon: Agreed... Christian is believing in Christ, which both Christians and Catholics do... Catholic is a denomination of Christianity. Protestant and Catholic aren't the same but they're both Christian. I'm sure you have Catholics voting "Christian" because it's first on the list so that's where they'd put themselves.

@jillmatt: My beliefs are very similar to yours. I think religion is a beautiful thing, but feel like I am not being fully truthful if I say "I'm a Christian." I think whatever religion (or lack of) works best for the individual is the right way to live, as long as no one is getting hurt.

I think being a good person, respecting others, and doing the right thing in the face of adversity is the real truth behind it all.

My husband would say he's a Christ Follwer.
