I love being a 20 something (26, to be exact!). The whole world is my oyster, and I can't wait to see what life has in store.
So obviously, a lot of bees are engaged (big life change there), but what other BIG changes have happened to you in your 20's that have have either changed your outlook on life, or changed you as a person? Or if you are just starting your 20's, do you anticipate will happen?
I'll start - I travelled internationally for the first time when I was 22. It was a HUGE deal, because I never got to travel as a child (finances were pretty tight in my house). Experiencing another culture for the first time, not to mention taking a PLANE for the first time, was amazing! I wrote a travel journal about the whole experience.
I also made a career change when I was 23, and went back to school. Now I am a much happier bee and can't wait to start my nursing career this May!
What about you?
I moved to another state...away from my entire family and moved in with FI. Also, this is a time for a lot of firsts for me: first time on a budget, first time not working since I lived at home, first puppy, but I think the biggest change in my twenties has been dealing with digestion issues and becoming vegan!
Good thread, by the way. I'm interested to see what the other responses are!
I'm in the first half of my 20s. Before I was 20, we bought our first house. We got married this year. I have gone back to school. I'm hoping to find a new job and we want to buy a new house in a year or so. Those are the only big changes I'm expecting.
I had my daughter when I was 21, and my son last year, at 23. They have completely changed my life- for the better of course. I hope in the coming years I will have a career I love, instead of a job I hate!
Graduated from college, moved in with a boyfriend, broke up with that boyfriend and moved back home, met new (and way better) boyfriend, got a pet bunny (he is now 7 years old!), got my PhD, got engaged, moved across the country with my fiance, and started a new job.
...oh and also I'll be getting married to round off the decade :-)
It hasn't all been easy, but I'm really happy with where my 20's have taken me.
I got engaged. lol. That's all thats really happened so far. I'm going to be getting married, graduating from college, moving to a different state, probably having kids. Hopefully, moving overseas!
Im also in my first half of my 20s, and this year especially has been crazy!! In august i had my first baby and became a stay at home mommy. which leads to me being finacially dependent on my FI, which was a huge struggle for me because i have always been very independent since we moved in together right after highschool. I got engaged in October!! I became an aunt in September! My dad had a stroke last spring which brought as a lot closer than we have been in years...Its been a crazy busy year, but honestly my 20s have been better than i ever imagined!!
It's so great to hear what people have experienced or plan to experience in their 20's!
I also moved across Canada with my FI (who was my boyfriend at the time). It was a huge adjustment, but what an adventure! I love living in British Columbia.
I moved away from home when I was 19, so I guess that doesn't technically count as my 20s :)
@MrsDeetoBee - what a big move to become a vegan - I am glad it is working out for you! I am gradually moving towards becoming a pescatarian.
Wow, I never realized what a busy decade it has been and will be for me, I'm 27 so I have a couple more years. I studied abroad in Spain when I was 20 and turned 21 there, it was great. Then I graduated college, got my first real job and hated it, around that time began dating the FH and it started off as a long distance relationship. So I went back to school for my master's and moved up north where he was and lived there for 3 years. Then I graduated grad school, we moved back to LA (hometown), then I found my real first professional job, and then we and got engaged less than a year later. And now here we are a bit less than 3 months away from the big day!
Bought a house and got married. Those are the good things.
Most of the other stuff has been negative and has been a direct result of grad school. Health problems, stress, sadness with career, etc.
first international travel for one month - alone (met a friend over there)
moved out of my parents' house
moved in with boyfriend
finished school
worked full time for the first time
started karate which became a passion
left boyfriend
met FI and started dating
changed careers
got engaged
moved in with FI
will get married next week.
We anticipate first kid while still in my 20s
OUF!!
Nothing yet. When I was 18 I flew alone to the Dominican Republic that's pretty much it. Soon enough hopefully I'll graduate college and go to law school or be hit with the reality that I might not be able to pay for it not even with loans and have to work great timing for all of that ha
I am currently 21 and so much has happened to me so far! I met my fiance when I was 18. We recently renovated our condo, then sold it and we are currently building a house, he has his own business, I am graduating from college and starting my career. We are getting married in August and hopefully will start a family not too long after we are married. And when I have my career going!
My 20's have been very exciting so far! :)
And congrats to all you other bee's with all of your accomplishments!!
@amariem: I've had a lot of bad things too but I didn't want to list them!
Well, the first 4 years of being in my 20's (I'm 23 but I'm counting 20) has been pretty easy- graduated college, getting married at 24, moving to a new city, going back to school, getting a living wage job (ha)... yeah, 24 is going to be ROUGH! And FUN!
Graduated from college, started and finished my graduate program, got a full time job, lived on my own for the first time, moved in with my then-boyfriend, got engaged, became an aunt for the second time.
Well I'm only 21 so not much has happened! Lol. College has opened up my world, though I'm so excited to be graduating this year, I'm sad too. I applied to grad school, hopefully this fall I'll be starting a program. I got engaged. I became an aunt!
Hopefully in 8.5 years I'll have a lot more under my belt.
I completed my degree, got a great job teaching, lived with my mates, lived with the fella, got engaged, travelled OS (some of it by myself) & loved it (including living in the snow in Sweden for 3 weeks which was massive cos it NEVER snow's where I'm from!), am in the middle of buying a block of land and putting a house on it and am planning a wedding. And I'm only 25! Can't imagine all the stuff I'll have done by 35!
Congrats to all of you...awesome awesome awesome!!!!
I graduated college, got my first "real" job (full time, salaried, etc), met my FH and became engaged, will be married in June, plan to move to Austin around then as well and buy a house...followed by babies! I am 22 now but will be 23 in March.
Good topic, although I'm the oldest one in the thread.LMAO

What a great thread - I am almost 27 and have experienced a lot!
wow! my 20s have been life changing.
moved out of home town..alone, went to college, graduated with bachelors, got an amazing job that i love, gained 50lbs and then lost 30, meet the love of my life, stopped partying all the time, quit smoking, got into and then back out of debt, got a deeper connection with God, got engaged, over came my fear of public speaking (i now teach computer classes!) and just bought a condo with the man i will spend the rest of my life with.
wow when you say it like that i sound like a mess.....but it was all worth it.
I am so thankful and lucky and so fortunate for what has come in the first half of my 20s. next half is to get married and, god willing, have some healthy children :)
I'm 25, so I guess I'm half done and half to go!
In the first half of my 20s I:
- Graduated from Undergrad and Law school, passed the bar, and got a job as a lawyer
- Took a two week trip overseas with a girl friend
- Lived alone for the first and last time
- Met my FI and got engaged
- Bought a house
In the second half of my 20s I will:
- get married!
- get healthy and learn to appreciate my body for what it is
- make grown- up friends
- take my (future) husband to europe... and just generally travel. a lot.
i've had quite a few. I graduated with honors and earned my master's degree in a year. I've lived in three different major cities. I picked up and moved 3,000 miles away. and of course, I got engaged!
I have really loved my 20s!!! I'm only 25, but the last 5 years have brought a lot of changes:
Lived on my own for the first time
Bought my first pet (my kitty - he just turned 6)
Took a road trip around the country with my best friend - incl. skydiving for the first time and learning to snowboard
Ran my first, second, and third marathons
Got my Bachelor's degree
Spent a summer by the ocean doing nothing
Moved to a different state for the first time
Got baptized YAY :)
Met my FI
Got my Master's degree
Spent a summer in Liberia, Africa working with orphans
Got a new car (first SUV)
Moved to yet another state
Finishing my Ph.D currently
Planning to get married in May and then moving to yet another state (this time hopefully for good)
I'm so excited to see where the next 5 years will take me :)
Sooo many things.. i love reading everyone elses posts!
My 20s have been amazing so far and i hope to round out at the age of 25 with a degree, a new career and more financial stability. And i hope to god that Mr. StudentBride will stop leaving his dirty clothes all over our house in HIS 20's.
I finished undergrad and graduate school, got married, moved, and started my first real grown-up job (using my degree). It's been crazy at times, but I'm LOVING it.
I graduated from college at 21. At 23 my FI and I packed up and moved across the country, where we knew no one, away from our families and friends. We also bought our first home when we got here. I finished my Masters degree at 25. Getting married at 27. And we'll get our first puppy together in a few months - for us it's like we're having our first child!
I'm 29, i had my son at 20, graduated college at 22, started my business at 27 and got engaged at 29...
Valhalla, like you I also made a career change to nursing, and I'm 23. I have worked as a nursing assistant for the past 2 years, but I am now working in another area of healthcare (which I really do not like). I'm not sure why I never went back to school for nursing, but I'm hoping to start nursing school this fall.
I also moved out into my first apartment with my now FI when I turned 23, and just got engaged a month ago. :)
Graduated from college
Moved to a big city
Sowed my wild oats
Settled down with FI
Started a great career and got a promotion
Bought a house
Bought a dog
Started running
Got engaged
Bought a car
Paid of personal debt
I started full time employment when I was 19, and like some other Bees I'm in the first half of my twenties. I went self-employed when I was 20. FH moved in with me when I was 21 and we got engaged 6 months ago (23). And, of course, I'll be married next year soon after I turn 24! We're also looking to buy our first house this or next year and want to have kids within the next 3 -5 years.
at 22 i graduated college and moved to a city where i didn't know anyone for my first job, and then met fi 2 weeks after i moved. at 23 i started a better job. at 24 i moved in with fi and got a dog. then at 25, fi and i got engaged, and i applied to grad school. so now at 26 we're getting married and if i get in to school, we're moving and maybe (depending on where we move) buying a house! lots of big changes! also, last year i became an aunt, which is so so awesome :)
This is great! I love reading everyone else's posts. I am 25 now...here is the recap of what my 20's have brought for me.
1) Finished colleged at 20
2) Finished my masters degree at 22
3) Finished my Ph.D. at 25
4) Moved to 2 different states
5) Broke up with my loser of an ex
6) Met my hubby to be
7) Now a professor in Ohio and loving wedding planning in between teaching and meeting with students
Well, I met my hubby at 15, so I think of my 20s as the beginning of our 'adult' relationship. We've been committed to each other since high school but the 20s really confirmed that for us. I'm 25 now and he's 27.
I went away to undergrad (in a different state than DH),
graduated with my BA,
moved to Pittsburgh (where my DH was),
set up my first (and only) solo apartment, pink couch, lace curtains and all.
started a 5 year doctoral program.
I'm now almost to the end of the 4th year.
We got our first apartment together,
built a life in the same city for the first time,
got engaged,
got a dog,
got married (9 years later!),
and recently bought our first home.
Now we're looking forward to my graduation and subsequent employment, his return to graduate school and enjoying the rest of our 20s together. We'll leave the 30s for babies. :)
Wow, this is a GREAT topic. I turned 26 and was kind of sad to leave my "early" 20s behind but it's nice to look back on acomplishments and look forward to the next few years. In my 20's a few of the things I'Ve done are:
Reading these, I realize I've never lived alone and now I hope that I never do because it will mean something happened to FI. Actually , this is one regret that I had for awhile but I'm a pretty social person and it just never happened, during college I lived with friends and during my masters too then I moved home for a couple of months and then I moved in with FI.
Not as accomplished as some of the bees around here, but:
1) LDR for early 20's
2) lived alone
3) Lived in like, 6 different cities across 3 states
4) Got 2 cats
5) Graduated from college with a BS at 22.
6) Traveled to the UK (furthest i'd ever been was mexico)
7) Became an engineer
8) Bought a house
9) Got enaged, then married
10) Started a MSE/MBA program, stopped after 1 semester, decided engineering was a no-go for me.
Later in my 20's...I'll be going back to school, new job, having kids, all that good crap. I'm only 23 (for like, one more month!) so I still got a lot of living in my 20's left to do.
I'm 20 now. First off, I got engaged!! I'm so excited to see what's in store for me in my 20's. It seems like it's going to go by SO fast! I wish we could all just stay young forever. I have a great feeling that my 20's are going to be wonderful. I plan to have my first child, buy my first house, and start my career. I've changed dramatically over the past 2 years so I can only IMAGINE what's in store for me!
I have had a lot of life changing events occur in my 20s...not all were fun, but all were meaningful and made me into the person I am today.
There are so many things I am sure I am forgetting, but these are the big events that occured in the first half of my 20s
I am 25 now and expect to have a few big changes in the future
I have a feeling our 20's are the biggest decade for a lot of us.
In my 20's I have:
graduated college
gotten my first big girl job
adopted a puppy
getting married
buying a house
Will Probably:
Adopt another puppy
Have a child or 2
