At my 8 week appointment (also my very first appointment with my OB) I had a transvaginal ultrasound to kick things off. Saw the heart beats (also found out we were pregnant with twins) and got everything and everyone measured. Then I met with my OB who basically interviewed my husband and I on our family history and kind of the do’s and don’ts of being pregnant. She gave us a lot of information on different upcoming tests that are standard and optional for us. She also did a pelvic to check my cervix. It was also the best time for my husband to answer all our questions (def. write them down or else you’ll forget them). Thats pretty much it. Or what I can remember.

Not sure if it would be any different in NZ than in the US, but I’m guessing it will be similar.

Congrats!

@Wellington Bride:  I saw my OB at 8 weeks. I had been seeing her as a GYN since age 15 so I was familiar w her. She did a pap smear, a transvaginal ultrasound, discussed pregnancy dos and don’t, family history and we scheduled appointments through 20 weeks. She also answered any questions we had.

@Wellington Bride:  Nope she didn’t ask about my mothers pregnancy at all so don’t worry ab it! My pregnancy is actually already over, my daughter is 7 months and my pregnancy was nothing like either of my moms anyway. 🙂 The OB may just ask about family diseases non pregnancy related (heart disease, thyroid issues, diabetes etc) She also did blood work my first appointment, fun!

@Wellington Bride:  Thats very exciting! I also went the OB route but here in NZ with you!! My first appointment we just went over my history and family history (which I actually dont know alot about). My BP and weight was taken but I didnt have an ultrasound with the OB I was referred for one instead. They prescribed me iodene, folic acid, aspirin and calcium – both for my hx of preeclampsia. I am having a high risk pregnancy but since that first appointment we have decided I will stay with my LMC and only see the OB if required. Thats through the public health system though 🙂 GL with your appointment!

It might be different in NZ than the US but I’ll share anyway. We went at 8.5 weeks. They did a urine sample, blood test for things like HIV, immunities, iron levels, etc. Took about 5 vials so if they are going to so that make sure you are well hydrated. Did a pap, breast exam, transvag US, then just discussed medications, family history etc. Family history was basic stuff you would usually answer such as wether relatives have a history of breast cancer etc. Then we just discussed first trimester, genetic testing, etc

That’s great to hear. Glad it went well. I’m curious how it will be when I finally get to the stage you’re in. Curious how the system works here in NZ compared to the USA. It’ll be an interesting experience I’m sure. Glad everything is going well. Happy and healthy 7 months remaining!

@Wellington Bride:  I’m still waiting to get KU. Thought we had a great shot at it this month, but Af arrived just in time to dash that hope. I think it’ll be interesting since everyone I know has had kids in the US, without midwives and in a fairly restricted manner. I’m planning on what my sister kindly refers to as my “hippy way.”
