FH and I are doing year-end donations.  I have a few charities in mind, but don't want to overlook a good cause.  What charities do you support?

We don't have a ton of extra money for charity donations, so we mostly donate to the ASPCA, which is the NYC-specific SPCA.  This is a cause very important to both of us.

ETA: My mom donates to a breed-specific rescue for greyhounds.  So that is an option as well.

I give to the United Way throughout the year. I love all the different programs they have, and the fact that my money goes to help the local community.

I give to the United Way throughout the year (auto-deducted out of every paycheck) with earmarked funds to Nevada Legal Aid, Nevada Cancer Center, and the NSPCA.  I also contribute to the Livestrong Foundation and the Susan G. Komen foundation given that my family is riddled with cancer. This year, my DH and I requested that, in lieu of xmas gifts, that money be donated to no-kill animal shelters both here in Nevada and in Ontario, Canada (where my in-laws live).

We support a few local area animal rescues.  What are you guys interested in?  Do you have a family member or friend who is/was afflicted with a disease?  There are charities for cancer, autism, parkinsons, diabetes... find something that you will feel good about, something that has a personal significance to you.

This year I gave to the House of Ruth (a local domestic violence center and shelter), RAINN  (a national sexual violence crisis hotline), the Maryland Food bank, and Animal Rescue Inc. (a local no-kill animal rescue group)

I pretty much save my charity for when my high school does their annual marathon dance to benefit local families and organizations that need assistance (whether it be a handicapped accessible van, medical bills paid, a transplant, etc…). I’d much rather see my money going to a family that I “know” (maybe not personally but atleast they’re neighbors of some kind) than a foundation that may only get a percentage of my donation.

As for actual foundations that I’ve donated to:

    Make a Wish
    ACS
    ASPCA
    Ronald McDonald House
    Local animal shelters
    Planned Parenthood
    Among others...

Shriners Hospital, always in the Forbes top 10 best charities.  They averave 90 cents of every dollar directly to patient care, which consists of children.  They are the leading hospital in pediatric burns and amputies.  I want my money to go to those they are supposed to be helping and not administration.

The Autism Society. Autism has become a common word in many households but its still severely underfunded when it comes to research. Having a child with ASD, every little morsal of research is important to us and helps us decide what the next best step is.

Also to our local animal shelter.

And I do payroll deduction to the United Way throughout the year with my donation earmarked for a local organization that does vocational training for handicapped individuals.

There really isn't a wrong choice when it comes to donations. Any cause that speaks to your heart is a worthy cause and any amount can be useful!
