I voted that red will be fine, but if you're shooting for a vintage look and are worried about the red, any darker shade will do. Dark or bold lips were definitely common in that era, without necessarily being red toned.
I can't wear dark lips--they look ridiculous and overdone on me, sadly. I'm thinking of a "true red" (my favorite is Revlon Colorstay 345 - Red Velvet), but am worried it might be a little too bright.
I don't think it will be too bright. I love red lips - don't let the green dress stop you!
I think you just have to find the right red - try a bunch of different ones. I am shooting for an "Old Hollywood" look for my wedding so I've tried a million different red lipsticks trying to find the right one. You might have to mix some together to achieve the perfect shade.
My makeup trial was the same day as our engagement pics. I wore a green shirt (b/c I LOVE green- it's my fave color)- and the makeup artist said the green shirt with the red lips looked too Christmas-y, but other people disagreed with her. Here is a pic so you can see what the green might look like with red lips. But remember, only you will know for sure what you're comfortable with. Take pics of yourself with different shades of red while wearing the dress and show the pics to family and friends to get their opinions. You are going to look FAB, regardless!

What about a more saturated pink? Pink would really pop against the green without looking Christmas-y.
@Monkeygirl: That looks wonderful! You've found the perfect shade, for sure. :) The shade I mentioned (the Revlon) is THE red lipstick for me (I tried about 84,000 different ones but finally found that one), so basically it's that shade or bust, haha. I'll see how it looks with the dress, once the dress is actually in existence (a friend is making it for me). But I wore red shoes with a green dress for e-pics and it looked fine, so I'm guessing it's the same principle.
@crayfish: Do you have any examples of specific shades I could try? Pink's a tough one for me to pull off, too, since most are so similar to my natural lip color there's not much difference.
how about nars funny face or make up for ever's neon orange. both look great on pale skin.
I wore a bright pink to my wedding (Nars schiap). You can see it in any of my recent blog posts.
I love that color green, by the way!
@scissors: Both are lovely, but a little bit brighter/more summery than what I'm looking for. :(
Here's the shade I have (forgive my conspiciously un-make-up'd state--just got up, lol). The teeth...it whitens them! ;P
And yes, the shape of my top lip happens to be a tad uneven. :(
Feedback on that color? Too bright? Does it work? Etc. etc. when I have more cash, I'll try to get my hands on a good pink that'll work with my coloring.
I would use a matte coral type color/browner red color. That red is super bright.
Yeah, I was thinking it's a little bright, too. Coral tends to make teeth look dingy, though, which is why I've avoided it in the past. Do you think a brownish red will look too bruise-like or dirty, though? I've always been told to avoid brown-toned shades...
I wonder if I could get away with a natural lip...I'm not a lipstick fan in general.
I really like the red w/ green - - Maybe you can find a deep red vs a corvette red.. Here is a great picture that I think shows how pretty red lips + green dress can be!

PS - - YES a natural gloss would/will also look gorgeous
I'm thinking maybe a light stain to bump up my natural lip color. FH hates red lips; I love them, but if I'm going to be kissing him, I don't want him to be like, "NO! Not red!" ;P That would suck.
I like the picture that jackie-o posted, because it looks like a pinky-red- it's not too bright. Keep in mind that you can also mix colors in order to achieve the shade you want.
Red is fine and won't look Christmasy at all. Watch a few episodes of Mad Men and pay attention to Joan Holloway, especially in the first season. She wore green dresses all the time with red lipstick and it didn't look holiday-ish in the least.
maybe go to the makeup counter wearing a green shirt close to the color of your dress and see how you feel? maybe if you went for a darker more burgundy color?
@jadebinkx: I might try that, though I think a natural, slightly glossy lip might be my best bet. Burgundy tends to hardcore wash me out. :(

I'm super-pale and love wearing a red lip, but I don't want to look too Christmas-y with my green dress. What shades are still vintage/retro (other than red) that would still look good with my skin tone? Or, is it still okay to wear red with this color dress?
