That sucks! I don't blame you one bit! I have no idea what they would do for you (compensation-wise) but it doesn't hurt to ask. You might talk to the manager and just tell him your frustration with your experience at his store. Hopefully he would be able to do something. Good luck to you, that's a tough one : /
If it were me, I would demand a refund and go to a different jeweler.
@noritake22- but I've "owned" the ring for 4 months, isn't it a bit late for a full refund? Especially after sooo many repairs and changes to the ring?
@okqueenbee- I think I might ask what they can do for me when (if ever!) my ring finally is finished with its repairs. Its the 5th piece of jewelery we've bought with this jeweler and the only one to have problems. Annoying!
I second noritake22. After the 2nd time the prong broke I'd have just demanded a refund. Once could've been a fluke, twice is a pattern.
I'm sorry that you're going through this with your engagement ring! You have every right to be disappointed and I agree with the above posters. This jeweler should be very willing to work with you or refund your money. Let us know what happens!
i'm so sorry this is happening to you! that totally sucks! a week after my fi proposed, we took my ring back in to be resized, and it took 6 weeks! it had to go to Germany to be resized by the ring's designer, and it got stuck in customs so they had no idea how long it would take. it sucked! can the jeweller at least let you "borrow" a replacement while they're fixing yours? mine let me do that after a couple weeks, it made things at least a little better....
Oh no!!! This is horrible.
I have to say that I agree with Noritake on this one. I would demand a refund. Or perhaps you can just get a refund for everything except your center stone, keep that stone and take it to another jeweler to reset if for you - PROPERLY!!!!
This is ridiculous! I mean really, a prong breaks, is fixed, then breaks AGAIN!!?!?! THat is poor workmanship and it sounds to me like you're going to be replacing that center stone at some point anyway, because it's probably going to fall out due to shoddy workmanship.
Even if you don't want to give the ring back and get a refund, I think you have justifiable cause to demand some sort of restitution.
Wait, it's taking them a month to fix a prong?! That sounds dodgy to me already. But I don't know if that's something normal over there or not. I don't know if they do it at your jewellers but at mine whenever I have to send my ring in or when I ordered my wedding band they gave us a deadline of when the ring would be instore next. So we always knew that no matter what happened our ring/s would be in store by XYZ, if not earlier. Is that something you can request next time so that the time waiting feels a bit easier? It sounds like the inconsistances are what's really annoying.
@finnaroo- I'm not sure what kind of temporary replacement they could borrow me, since my ring was custom. They have the same setting, but the stones in mine were custom. And frankly, at this point, I've been without it so long no one asks where my ring is any more.
@CorgiTales- When it broke a mere Week after getting it back, I was SO beyond livid. It just never occured to me to ask for my money back!
@MrsK2B- I agree that I now fear 100% that my prongs will break again and I'll eventually lose the center stone. I'm not sure what kind of restitution would work though. What are 4+ months of frustration and saddness worth?!
@littlemissmoo- They have averaged about 3 weeks to fix whatever was wrong all the other times, so this IS excessive. And normally they do tell me to expect it back by XYZ, but this time they said they couldn't give me a date because "we're busy, very busy in January with all the new engagements and how do we know how long it'll take to fix your ring?" At the time, I figured I'd get it back in 3 weeks like always (they've given me the "we're really swamped" line before). But its now been 6 weeks and no ring! Booo!
Just thought I'd update everyone-
I got my ring back and I am not terribly happy. I can see marks in the prongs from where they had to rebuild them. There is a crack in the shank, near the bottom. The setting for one of the side diamonds is now at an angle (very noticable!) when it wasn't before. And worse, I SWEAR its not my sapphire in the center any more! The jeweler swore up and down and sideways there was NO way they could have or would have replaced my stone, but I swear just as much that MY stone did not have a visible flaw in it when I handed it over weeks ago! I am so upset by the state of my ring and the length of time I've had to wait to get it back that I walked out with it. The compensation they gave me? We had my FI's pocket watch (an anniversary gift from me!) in for repairs. They "only" charged us $70 for the repairs instead of the supposed $180. Still not satisfied.
But then again, maybe I am being too picky? Are rings not suppose to be perfect and should they show obvious work marks on them? Should I not care about the angled side setting (even though it wasn't angled before)? Should I not care that my nearly flawless sapphire suddenly has a flaw? Arg. After this mess I never want to deal with jewelers ever agan!
Where have you been sending your ring? It sounds like they've done a crap job all around. :( It's possible that they cracked your sapphire resetting it, or they used a filler to disguise the flaw which came out during cleaning. And the setting definitiely shouldn't have a crack. I'd absolutely recommend going to a different jeweler (definitely not a chain in the mall) to see if they can fix it.
It dosen't matter when the ring was bought. I worked in fine jewellery with precious stones for 5 years and it sounds like theres a problem with the ring itself - it sounds porous to me, but I would have to see it to say for sure. It sounds like a manufacturing fault - please don't accept this c r a p.
I'd demand a totally new ring, there's evidently a problem with this one. I know you love it and you're probs attached to the stone, but this isn't fair.
Stand your ground and see if they will give you a big discount on your wedding bands for the inconvenience - good luck x

I am getting all sorts of sad. We bought and paid for my E-ring back at the end of September. Since then it has spent more time "in the shop" then on my finger!
First they messed up the sizing and I had to give it to them for 3 weeks to resize it (after having spent 3 weeks waiting for it after ordering it custom). I wore it for a week then realized there was a HUGE flaw in my center stone which was driving me insane (its a natural blue sapphire). A month later I get it back with a new near perfect stone. A Week later a prong holding the center stone breaks off and the stone nearly slips out! Back into the jeweler for another 3 weeks. A mere week later the prong breaks Again! They've now had my ring for well over a month with no indication when I'll get it back. Boooo!
*sigh* I just wanted to whine and moan a little. I feel like we saved up for 7 months for THIS?! Plus, how many problems do I have with this thing before I freak out at the jeweler about their shoddy ring and demand some kind of compensation? If any? I have not paid for any of these repairs (we got a lifetime warrenty that comes with free stone replacement (for lost/broken ones), free resizing, free cleaning, etc.) but that doesn't change the fact that in 4 months of owning this ring I've gotten to wear it for Maybe 3-4 weeks total. Crazy!
I just want my pretty back home, in one piece, in my size! *pouts*
