What could be the cause of not getting a positive OPK?

first off *breathe*

we’re not going to be able to answer a lot of those questions because I don’t know your body. Your body could have ovulated, it could have geared up for ovulation but stress pushed your body into delaying that, you could have missed the surge with the opk, the opk’s could be crap, or opks may not work well for you.  Could you be pregnant? Sure! but you’re not going to know until you test and in your case, since you don’t know when you ovulated, I would wait to test until you are late. Then just test once or twice a week until you get a positive test, you get your period, or it’s been way too long (like a month or so too late)

“my periods have always been 30-31 days but once we started TTC it went from 25 days to as long as 36 days”

That sounds a heck of a lot like the stress of ttc’ing possibly delayed your ovulation. Are you 30-31 days because you were on the pill? or is that what your body did naturally, prior to you deciding to ttc.

FWIW I’ve never had good luck with opk’s

There are a lot of things that could be going on (most of which are totally fine and normal), but one quick question. What time of day do you take OPKs? With pregnancy tests, first thing in the morning is best, but OPKs tend to give the best info if you take them in the afternoons.

That said, it could be different for you. Maybe first thing in the morning is best for you. That’s one of the tricks of using OPKs–finding out when (or if) they work for you.

Do you temp? That could also help you pinpoint ovulation, and then you could test around those days more often to see if that gives you more info.

@graygodess20:  I think I just didn’t have the patience to figure out the best time of day to pee on it. I like looking at my cm instead and then use my temps to verify after the fact. I feel it’s a better indicator, and I only do ‘external observations”. Like jess said above, you just need to find a time of day that’s best for your body. And if you want you can use the cheapos and then pull out the fancy smiley face ones right when you’re getting your surge to verify. (like if you have one where you can’t tell if it’s positive just pee on the fancy kit!) I highly suggest temping. That will give you an indicator if you’re ovulating or not.

@graygodess20:  If you had a 25 day cycle, you could definitely O on day 10 or 11, which usually means a + OPK on day 8 or 9 – so you would have missed it this cycle! OR if you had a 35 day cycle, it means you could O as late as CD25 or even later, which means you wouldn’t have gotten a + OPK yet.

Ive only used the Wondfo O strips, so can’t answer about the walmart brand.

Temping – As long as you are consistent everday (walking the dogs at the same time, getting up to pee around the same time, taking your temp at the same time) you should be able to detect a pattern in your BBT.

Good luck!!

Are you testing twice a day? Sounds to me you may have just missed it.

@graygodess20:   I think that window is likely too small.  I would test early morning (8am) with FMU, and then around 6-8.

OPKs never worked for me and I always understood it to be caused by being off on the timing of the hormone surge.  My cycles varied enough (and OPKs are relatively expensive so I only did 3-4 per cycle) that I could never test often enough for a positive test since the surge only lasts 1-2 days.  If I had a more predictable cycle, I would be more likely to test during my fertile window and see a positive test.  That’s why I charted other symptoms like the position of my cervix and cervical fluids.
