@fabange:  we chose my oldest friend and her FI who are both the same religion, practise said religion at approximately the same level as us, have been in a stable relationship for a long time, and would be exactly the kind of spiritual role models we feel comfortable with our kid looking up to were we not around to do it ourselves.

there was some muttering amongst the siblings in law which I thought was interesting since they are all non practising and one is even self described atheist.

just remember that it is not a popularity contest, nor is it about who you love the most. Pick two people that you believe can work together to provide for your child the kind of spiritual guidance you plan to give them yourself.

Good luck

Our children’s godparents must be active Lutherans and family members. They must also be married to active Lutherans. Thankfully we have plenty of options! Definitely someone who is a great role model and you would trust raising your children!

@MrsN14:  just to clarify, as I think your post could potentially be misunderstood, the godparents’ role is strictly a religious one. They would not be raising the children unless they were named as legal guardians in a will.

@gollum:  Our church has the legal guardians as the religious godparents. They will be the same people, although for some if may be different people.
