I know when my family went down they used American and there was no problem. Same with my aunt and uncle who live in Costa Rica, often times they will just use american.
You'll be fine with the American dollar :) Just make sure you have enough cash for everything you need because the ATM fees there are ridiculous and sometimes your bank will charge you an extra fee just for using your credit card internationally because they have to process the transaction differently than in the US.
American should be fine! We used our credit cards as well and had no issues either.
You can use US Dollars in Costa Rica. To ensure the best exchange rate, use your credit card as much as possible.
You can also order currency from your bank if you would like.
Take US $$, use your credit card for hotels, and I would also recommend exchanging some of your US$$ into Colons once you get there for shopping in the markets, etc. I found it a lot easier to not get ripped off by the locals when I was using colons, especially when shopping!

I've never been to Cosat Rica, but have been to quite a few countries in the Caribbean and I just used American.

I thought maybe some of you who had been there could help me out! I keep finding mixed reviews - some say bring US Dollars and some say to use the Costa Rican Colon.
Advice?
