I know that there have been similar threads and maybe this one has already been done, but I'm kinda curious about how everyone's degrees (if applicable) may relate to their careers.
Did you attend college/university - if so, what did you major in/what degree did you earn and what is your intended/current career?
Did you attend a trade school - what certification/degree did you earn and how does it apply to your career?
If you're currently a student, what certification/degree are you working toward and what career would you like to pursue after school?
If you did not pursue any higher form of education, does your career normally require any degrees/cert.s? Do you feel that this has impacted your career potential in any way?
*Please withhold snarky remarks and only share information if you're comfortable :)
I went to university and got a BA with a major in Architectural Design. Then I had a career in film & television for a few years (totally not related to my degree), then I went to college and got my diploma in Interior Design. I'm currently an interior designer, but I'm thinking about yet another career change :)
I have a B.A. and am going for an M.A. in medical anthropology which I will get faster if I write these 2 papers instead of getting on the 'Bee. Argh...
I plan on working in public health and with marginalized populations.
BS with a major in Marketing. Just got a part time sales rep job... hopefully full time by the new year!
I am a Research Associate in the Field of Child Development and Human Relations
AKA stay at home mom. I have two children, ages 1 and 4 and I cater to their every NEED, all the while continuing to make sure they have sufficient self awareness of their own actions and reactions in order to make this world a better place, while honing their personal skills and interests!
I have a BA in Communication, minor in Spanish. I work as a copy editor at a newspaper. My Spanish minor is irrelevant in northeast Indiana. Might sign up for a conversational class just to stay in practice, though.
I'm a doctor (the medical kind). FI is a chef, but has a master's in public administration or some such thing.
@Bostonsmom: HAHA I love that! Too funny. My FI's mom had the same occupation, but now she's retired ;) Best job in the world, right?
Wow it's really interesting to see how everyone's degrees have related (or not!) to their careers! Thanks for sharing :)
i have an associates in general studies... but soon i will have my bachelors (only 3 more classes!! woo hoo!!!) and then im going right back to become a nurse.... looks like ill never be done with school hehe
I have a Master's degree and I'm a professor. At the university where I work, about 90% of the tenure-track faculty have a PhD, so my degree was the minimum I needed for this career.
@stephanie63087: I feel ya! I've had to work full-time to support myself while in school, so I've had to go slower.... feels like I'll never finish at this rate!
1 semester left! I'll have a BA in Secondary Education in the area of Speech/Theatre (drama, speech and debate, public speaking, oral comm, etc). My theatre specialization is costuming and theatrical/special effects makeup.
@indyJEEP: best job in the world, unless its one of those days where my SO has been away working for over a week, the kids are sick and I've had 6 hours of sleep in two days. I'm actually just in it for the pay ;)
I have a Ph.D in Cell Biology, I'm currently teachng Biology as an adjunct lecturer. Haven't been able to find a full-time position, yet anyway.
Associates in Art, Bachelors in Art History/History, and will be getting my Museum Studies Masters Certificate in December...as long as I pass all my classes ;)
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology. I currently work as a volunteer program coordinator/information officer/office manager for the local police detachment. I'm currently looking into take some crime analysis computer courses to become an intelligence analyst.
I have BS in Biology. I'm currently getting my master's in pharmacology. I'm a research associate (scientist) at a local biotech company.
I have a BA & MA in Psychology & work for a nationwide healthcare provider as a department coordinator. Not exactly the job I thought I would have, but I am madly passionate about the agency's mission.
I'm finishing up my master in geotechnical engineering, so by the time i'm married, I would have a master...it's hard work getting that darn piece of paper! :p
I'll have my master's in a month or so. I am working on a Ph.D in the same field (experimental psychology). So my career is student forever :( ho hum. I want to teach and/or do market research.
I am getting my BA in Psychology in May (thank goodness!) and then perhaps following it up with an M.Ed. in Speech Language Pathology. Maybe, maybe not at this point. :)
This is interesting to read/see.
@indyJEEP: ugh right! i dont work full time but about 30 hours a week and its been rough! i should have just been a doctor!! 8 years of college and im never home!
I picked I don't have a degree, however, I will have my B.S. in Accountancy next May from a state university! Yay! I currently work at two places. An online retail store as an accountant and a school newspaper as a business manager; basically an accountant.
I plan on working for an accounting firm doing advisory or audit work or opening my own business with emphasis in product branding.
I am a college professor and have a master's degree in the field I teach in. I love my job!
I have a BA in Professional Writing. These days I write and write and write and look for a full-time job and write some more. It's fabulous. Except for the starving artist aspect, but I guess I should have seen that coming. :P
I have a BS in athletic training and I'm a certified athletic trainer, but I currently work as a behavior therapist (I work with kids with autism). I hope to start my masters next fall in occupational therapy.
I'm most of the way through a BA in Anthropology (general/cultural concentration, minor in Museum Studies). I will be starting a Master's Program in Museum Studies the fall after graduation (a second MA and/or a PhD may follow) if possible with an emphasis on Collections Management (though most programs do not offer a focus, at least the programs I am looking at.)
I would love to go back into Military History (interned part-time in it this summer) but I need more training in arms and I've been told to look into Anthro-centric collections instead because of my major (which I choose before going into MST).
I have a BA in Editorial Journalism. I started out writing for a newspaper but hated the stress, long hours and small pay. I now work as a public information officer at a community college and I love it! I still get to write but also have job stability, security and great bennies. Definitely rewarding, too!
BA in Political Science with a minors in Middle Eastern Studies and Hebraic Studies (this one I didn't get to finish as the only professor that taught the final two classes left the university, and he was my favorite professor) :(
I have been managing federal campaigns for years and wrote political position papers for federal candidates. I have taken the last four years off for a myriad of reasons, but next year I will be back in the frey.
I have a BA in English and MA in Education, K-12. I teach PK, but I'd like to go to the college level SOON!
I like reading all the extra info about everyone's careers! Nice thread OP!
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Operations from a merchant marine academy where I got my USCG 3rd Mate's (as in a mate on a ship) License. I chose to work on towboats instead of deep sea ships for the better schedule.
On a side note, does anyone know what I would need to do to become a teacher at some point down the road? (Preschool/kindergarten, primary or elementary?)
I have my BA in Psychology and Health Science focusing on addictions counseling. I have my Master's in School Counseling. Unfortunately where we live school counseling jobs are hard to come by and moving out of the area is not an option (FH has a great job making 2x what I would ever make as a school counselor) so I work for a not for profit agency as a Prevention Specialist. I teach life skills (self esteem, communication, how to be a good friend, problem solving, drug and alcohol prevention, etc.) to students in grades K-6. I really love my job because it lets me do all the things I love about being a school counselor without any of the stress!
I am a teacher who has a BA in liberal arts, and MA in English, and an M. Ed. in education.
Certainly the poll could have had a spot for MD's, JD's and Phd's and EdD's.
I have a BS in Justice Studies. I was planning on going to law school, then got all the way through taking the LSAT, writing personal statements and getting ready to send off applications when I realized I'd just be putting myself hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt in student loans to be miserable for the next 3 years and then have a miserable career that I was trapped in because I had all those loans to pay back. So I didn't go. LOL. I worked for an educational services website in Austin as their legal department handling public records requests and writing appeals to schools/counties/states that didn't want to comply with public records laws. I loved it. But now I stay home with my daughter and will until she's probably 3 or 4.
It varies state to state, but typically you would have to choose the subject you want to teach, and then take about 30 hours of additional classes specific to that subject. Let's say you wanted to teach English- they'd factor in whatever English hours you already had with your degree and you'd probably have to complete anywhere from 25-35 more hours in order to be qualified to teach it. I also believe you have to take a PRAXIS exam to be certified to teach and possibly do a student teaching period where you assist another teacher in teaching her class to get your feet wet and be observed.
I have a BS in Business Admin and Management. Up until this past Friday, I worked for a State Farm agent, now I am an independent agent for Alfac. I never thought that Insurance would be my career, and I'm still not sure. Depending on how Aflac pans out for me, I want to go back to get my Masters in Sustainability management and become a sustainability consultant for businesses
I have a BS in Biology and am a research tech doing NIH funded research at a large university.
I have my Bachelors in Special Education.... and am a Special Ed teacher. There are plenty of days that I consider a career change, but there's not much else I'm qualified to do than teach special kids haha
