Mine looks like a stack of large antique books with moss that looks like it's growing up over it to fit in with our forest theme... they are hollow inside and I cut holes in them and glued them together to make 1 large box. The top book opens up and theres just a small slot to put cards down inside.
We got ours from WeddingMainSt.com

I made mine using a ballot box from work. I spray painted it ivory (which is the only thing I bought specifically to DIY the card box.) then wrapped it in a large strip from a plastic ivory tablecloth from the dollar store and tied a bow with ivory tulle. The tablecloth and tulle were leftover from other DIY projects.
ETA: At first I had wrapped the the entire box with the tablecloth but DH said it looked too "fru-fru" and people wouldn't know it was the card box. My teenage daughter liked it. I wish I had left it that way. But, this way worked.

My FI is building a birdhouse card box, similar to this: ( I love that we will be able to use it in the future)

Ours was a barn, since we were married at a barn. It cost about $30. I purchased the wooden barn unfinished and then painted it myself. I think either of your ideas would make a great cardbox!

Here is the DIY cardbox I made for our 3/31/12 wedding. And, a link to my tutorial post: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/my-diy-cardbox-inspiration-vs-my-box-pic-heavy
Mine was... different. My DOC knew I was doing a theatre feel and took it to a whole new level! lol I didn't see it until the Day Of.

I made ours from 4 picture frames, some hinges, particle board, a lazy susan and some fabric/batting. 4 sides, 4 photos. I've since taken it apart and hung the frames with new photos.
Here's mine. It's just satin and ribbon wrapped stacking boxes with artificial callas. I still love it.
Mine was actually a DIY inspiration from @amw511s. I sprayed a box with white primer, cut the slot, sprayed it with adhesive, and wrapped it with lace. Then I pinned the card sign and ribbon roses I made.

We bought a wooden box from hobby lobby. We use it now to store any cards we get from Christmas, birthday, etc.
@amw511s: Love your box. I am inspired to make one now. Can you tell me if you used the same Scotch glue all over, even the inside of the box?
Do I have to pay special attention when I wrap the lace along the edges of the round cover? I am a DIY newbie. Thanks.
@Elle_Neotoma: It's beautiful! I love that my box inspired you to create yours! Isn't the lace just fantastic!?
@Mommalita: You don't need to spray the inside of the box. Just the very inside top so that the lace wraps over it nicely and stays secure. Your hands will probably get sticky... but it washes off pretty easily. The lace is very forgiving... it kind of stretches so there won't be any gaps if you roll the box over the lace like a tire. If you had a second pair of hands, that would be really great. We laid the lace out on a table and my mom kind of rolled the box over the lace while I wrapped it and made sure it looked nice. Then, I just rolled the edges over the top! My tutorial is pretty detailed, but if you have any questions, just PM me and I can help! Make sure you scroll through all the comments though because I responded frequently to questions and posted more photos of the process as people asked. Good luck! Post pics when you're done!
@amw511s: Thanks. One more question, will there be any extra material (bulges) on the edge of the lid? Did you just lay the lace over the top of the lid and then fold it down the edge of the lid and tuck it inside?
@Mommalita: Both the lid and box of both tiers are wrapped seperately for a nice seam. If you just tucked the lid lace underneath, there would most certainly be a bulge and it wouldn't be stream-lined. IThe lace is really almost fool-proof... it should stretch very nicely over the edge of both the lid and box without creating a bulge. The easiest way for the lid is to lay it on top of the fabric (after it's already been sprayed with the Scotch spray glue) and fold over the edge. Secure with the spray glue and cut off the access.
@amw511s: I drool every time I see your card box. I'll probably be making my own based off of your tutorial, I just hope it looks as nice :)

Hello Bees,
I am really interested to see all your card boxes for that you plan on using on your wedding day or you have already used. I am currently in the process of looking for ideas.. and would love to see all of you share yours. If you have any input, here are some of the things I have thought of:
1.) Wine Barrel
2.) Antique wine box
My wedding colors are turquoise and red with wine inspiration ideas :)
Thanks!
