Well I’m not yet married for the first time, but I suppose I have a bit of a similar situation.  I had a promise ring from a previous relationship, which was actually a 1/4 carat solitaire in yellow gold, so pretty nice!  I held onto it for a long time and it just sat in my jewelry box.  By the time Fiance and I were ready to get engaged, it held no sentimental meaning and was doing no good in the box, so I traded it in at the store where it was bought and we used it towards my e-ring.  I look at is as an $800 discount courtesy of my ex bf 🙂

I loved my ring but the second I learned my ex had been cheating I hated it. I left my ex husband the night I found out. I had always planned on trying to work through it but every time I saw him I wanted to puke, I decided on going through with the divorce two months after being separated and I sold the ring right after that. I was actually relieved to get rid of it.

I was only 20 when I married and I was divorced at 23. Looking back I was never really in love or devoted to the relationship which is why when I found out he was cheating it was more a sign of relief then a heartbreak. So maybe my attachment to the ring was not as strong as yours….

This is my first marriage but my third engagement. I still have the two other rings (their choice for me to keep them)  One I wear sometimes as it is a Claddagh and its pretty.  The other is in a safety deposit box.  I plan to sell it when we find somewhere to build our house, it is a large carat so I always kept it as my “back up plan” in case finances ever got that bad.

I gave it to my daughter.

I sold mine for scrap gold/diamonds. It wasn’t a very expensive ring to begin with (~$500). Selling it along with several necklaces (also gifts from my ex-husband), I got ~$200.

We ended up splitting before the wedding but I kept my engagement ring… it’s in my bathroom right now. No idea what to do with it… It’s so beautiful I hate to toss it or sell it for next to nothing.

I pawned my first engagement ring. I gave the wedding ring back to my first husband because it was his grandmother’s, so I didn’t feel right keeping it. I still have the rings from my second marriage… I still haven’t decided what to do with them, but I’m leaning towards trading them in for something else, and Darling Husband is good with that.

@Cupcake2012: Are there any consignment stores near you?  Might be a better option instead of just selling or pawning it.

I’d probably sell it, but if I had a child, then I’d give it to them to have.
