My mom is big on wanting something in the ceremony where the two mothers do something that symbolizes combining the families (i.e. sand ceremony, etc.). I really don’t want the sand, candle, etc. but am not sure how else to reflect two families combining…and how to incorporate the two mothers if I do something else…any suggetsions?

Hmmm… Maybe you could find a poem fitting that topic for them to share as a reading? Then that poem could be framed and displayed at the reception and in your home later on.
Otherwise if they are good at sewing or quilting maybe you could find a way to incorporate the beginning of a family quilt?

We’re considering doing a handfasting (old Celtic tradition of tying the bride & groom’s hands together with ribbons or cords) and having our moms come up to help tie the knot.

What about a rose ceremony? Or a ring warming ceremony?

My Mom walked me down the aisle with my Dad. We also did a ring warming ceremony, presentation of roses, and unity candle lighting. I really like the idea that FloretteLiz had. You could even have the Mom’s read various verses.
