What's the first thing you said when your fiancé asked you to marry him?
I said, "Really?" I thought he was joking - I was so taken by surprise!
We had just cross-country skied into a cabin for New Year's Eve. (in retrospect maybe I should not have been so surprised) We got there just at dark and hustled around trying to melt enough snow to cook dinner. After dinner we're both sitting there in our long johns and he asks me to come sit next to him by the fire. Next thing I know he's on one knee! Wow! A moment I'll never forget. :)
I said "WHAT THE HECK!?" then started crying uncontrollably lol
"Jerry. is there a reason why we are checking the surf so thoroughly? I mean, you don't even have your surfboard."
"Uh, I wanted to find a good spot to give you this," as he took out a little black box with a perfect three stone engagement ring.
"You didn't get down on your knee! Ask me again," as I pushed his shoulders down and he fell to his knees in golden sand.
"Will you marry me?"
"Yes, now get up."
Oh so romantic! lol!
I like these stories! I said "are you sure?" because he'd been adamant he wouldn't be asking until sometime until 2009, and this was november 2008. he'd also been giving hints recently he might never ask (don't you hate that!) i actually yelled it, because we were on top of a mountain and it was very windy. i can't really remember what else we said, it's a bit of a blur. i remember feeling very excited and jittery though!
I just wanted to add that he didn't actually ask me! I was hugging the concrete block that said you'd made it to the top of the mountain, felt a tap on my shoulder, turned around and he was down on one knee with this ring in my face. (No box, he knew I'd see the outline in his pants so he'd zipped it up in one of his pockets!)
Well, I thought I said "yes." My mouth moved and all, but nothing really came out. So I said it again louder and crammed the ring on my finger before he could change his mind!
When he got down on one knee, at first I thought it was the meanest joke - once I realized he was serious, I couldn't say anything I was so shocked!
I said "are you serious?" and started crying until I realized when he kept looking at me that I hadn't said yes yet! I said yes and kept crying while jumping up and down flapping my arms like a penguin :)
I dunno....I think I said, "really?! Of course!" Then again, when he first told me he loved me I said, "thank you" so who knows =]
He didn't ask-he handed me the ring and I started giggling uncontrollably. After about an hour, I said you didn't get a chance to ask but my answer is yes!
haha, I'm in the "are you serious?!" boat too. I was caught by TOTAL surprise. I thought a proposal wouldn't be for another 4 years, if ever!! Funny thing is, when I told my mom, she said the same thing, "are you serious?!" heh. Then I followed up with "of course I will" or at least I think I did. It was kind of a whirlwind moment and I can't remember exactly lol
I said "Well, it's a good thing, because we're already married". I never got an official proposal, so after we were married I made him ask me. He still hasn't gotten down on one knee...
I said "YES!" we hugged and cried a bit and then I immediately said "Ask me again!" and we repeated the whole scenario. He's re-asked me a few special times more since then too. I don't see why a girl should get only one proposal.... :-)
I am not quite sure exactly what I said...but he was walking over to give me the ring (it was a surprise but I had figured it out by this point). I immediately started crying and I probably said "oh my god". Then of course I said yes and "it's the most beautiful thing I've ever had" (about the ring).
Honestly, I never actually said yes. I just kept saying "Oh my God" over and over again, then I hugged him. He likes to tease me to this day that I never actually accepted his proposal.
We were just walking and talking casually and he interrupted me to say "It'll be nice to see your parents this weekend so you can show them your ring". Then we stopped. Paused. And I yelled "Shut. Up!" (valley girl style) as he gave me the ring. We're so lovely.
I thought I said yes...but apparently I let out a loud "eeeeep!" as Mr. Casanova likes to call it. He asked again to make sure that eeeeep meant yes :)
I said "it looks fine"
He asked me to marry him by handing me a bottle of wine with a label that said "Will you marry me?" He had replaced just one line of the label so there was still a lot of other writing on the bottle. He handed me the bottle and asked what I thought of it and since I didn't notice the replaced line of text I said "it looks fine". Then he told me to look closer and I finally noticed it and started screaming.
I honestly, cannot remember what he said to me. All I know is that when I opened up my eyes, he was on his knee with the ring in hand... All I said was:
"ABSOLUTELY"!
My answer was "for real?"
It was Christmas evening 2008, I just had flown into Austin from Boston and I was lying in bed. After eating a wonderful dinner he prepared he wanted to talk to me about the upcoming year b/c he was going to deploy. So he started out by say "You know I love you and I want you to know....don't remember b/c there was a shiny round solitare staring at me...and I looked at him and said "For Real" After about 5 minutes he finally asked well are you going to give me an answer and I said of course.
I said "Are you sure?" We had been together for 6 1/2 years and had been discussing marriage for awhile, but I wasn't expecting a proposal yet. He caught me completely off-guard, and I wanted to make sure he really wanted to be proposing. (We had several other friends/acquaintances getting engaged/married, and I wanted to make sure he didn't feel pressured.) I don't know what I was thinking, but it makes the story a little more interesting than if I had just said "yes!"
I have a friend who was vacationing with her boyfriend (now husband) and some of his family in Mexico. He convinced her to go for a walk on the beach late one night and proposed to her with all of their family milling around watching. She said, "We need to talk about this." They are married today, but I think her reaction/response is one of the funniest I've heard. I laugh when I think about what he must have been thinking after she said that!
Oh, these are funny and sweet.
I said, "we've already decided" because our engagement happened a little differently. There was a point when I asked him if he'd marry me, and he was so happy - sometimes I think of that as the proposal. We started making plans a few months later. By the time he presented a ring and did a traditional proposal we'd already set a date, told everyone, and even made deposits.
I said, "When did you plan all this?!?!" followed by a lot of OMGs that he thought I was ruining the moment by not answering him. LOL then I eventually said "Yes! Of course I'll marry you!"
We were in beach chairs on the dunes, enjoying a take-out dinner. It was my first day I got to spend with him in almost 6 months.
"Oh, I need to give you your surprise."
"Oh, that's right! I forgot you had said you had a surprise for me." *closed eyes, held out my hands seated while he stood in front of me.*
*SLIP! THE RING GOES ON MY FINGER*
I opened my eyes, and I see him lean in to kiss me. "Will you marry me?"
My mouth was open and nothing would come out for 15 minutes. All I could do was tremble, cry a bit, and mumble. Finally I told myself, "You have to say yes!! Say yes!!!"
I said yes, kissed and kissed him, and he said "Alright, starting calling everybody."
I screamed and screamed - I was so happy.
This is so weird. I've never even thought about this ... everyone (right after we were engaged) kept asking what he said ... and honestly, I couldn't remember
so I had to say to him that night "What did you say ... everyone keeps asking and I don't know!"
He asked meto close my eyes and when I opened them he was holding the ring in front of my face .... I think I might have gone into shock or I was mesmerized by the sparkling ... because I just remember crying and him putting the ring on my finger.
I actually think I was like "Are you sure?" LOL
I giggled and said yes
haha I can't remember what he said either!
He proposed before he proposed if that makes any sense! We had been ice skating at Rock Center for about 1.5 hours in the freezing cold snowy weather, they were finally kicking our group off to clean the ice and he brought me to the center - shaking - not from the cold. He couldn't stop kissing me and finally said "I'm going to ask you to marry me now, are you going to say yes??" And I said "Yes, of course!" (at that point it wasn't a surprise). Then he got down on one knee and asked and I said "yes" officially and the crowd exploded, it was great! But def not a surprise.
I said "Are you kidding?" And he said "No" and then I said "You have to get down on one knee first!" But then I said yes :)
I kind of blacked out when he proposed to me - later that day, when we were hanging out with family, someone asked me how I responded when he asked, and I suddenly realized that I had no idea! He assures me that I said, "Of course!" All I knew was that it was some form of "yes."
He proposed to me in a comic book store in Salem, MA. He got down on his knee in the spot in the store where he first saw me a year earlier and asked. I was shocked. I said yes of course, took the ring but didn't even look at it and just clung to him for like 15 minutes. Then I fainted. lol Well almost. I fell down, shaking. I think I wanted to faint but my brain was like Noooo.
He went to the front of the store and got some water because we were both pretty choked up. He was teary and I was shaking. People in the store must have thought we were crazy. lol.
I tried to pull him off his knees as i was crying, I donno why, it was just a weird reaction, I think I wanted to hug him, but he stayed put and I said of course
Oh gosh. Our engagement was slightly disastrous but definitely memorable.
In summary, I said "What, what, where did you get that?!?!?!"
We were snorkeling in Hawaii on the Big Island. I was having a lot of trouble getting in and out of the water at the "beach" we were at since it was very rocky with lots of lava rocks to try and maneuver getting in and out of the water with snorkel fins on. He was in the water and he called me over because he found something "really cool". I got back in without falling somehow but when my face went in the water my mask fogged up so bad.
I was squinting really hard trying to see this really cool thing and I look over at him and he's like frantically pointing to his hand.
I was thinking "ummm I can't see anything hello!" so I shrugged my shoulders at him and rubbed at my mask to demonstrate that I couldn't see crap at the moment. He still continued to point frantically to his pinkie finger. I literally had to get like ONE INCH away from his freaking hand to see what the hell he was doing.
It came to me slooowwwwlllyyyy.... My first thoughts: Oh he found something shiny. Oh it's a ring. Oh it's a really nice ring... Wait a second, you don't just find really nice shiny rings in the middle of the ocean!!! *gasp* *choke* *cough*.... yes, I literally choked on seawater.
I peered my head above water as did he and he said, "Did you see what I have?" and I said "uh huh..." and he said "So will you marry me?" And I said, "what? WHAT?! Where did you get that?!" and he laughed and said "uh I bought it!" and I said "oh". That's all I could say. OH. So he had to ask me again, "So will you marry me?!" and then I finally said "Oh of course!!"
When we made it back to shore so I could look at my amazing ring--that's when I slipped on the lava rock and when I reached down to catch myself, I sliced my finger wide open. I sat there with my new ring on one finger and with my pinkie finger bleeding everywhere for a few hours, happy as can be though! On my FI's way out of the water, the waves pushed him into one of those black spiky anenomes (yeah I think they are poisonous) and it left these weird ink/tattoo-looking spots on his leg for about a week. It was awesome ;)
I am an "ARE YOU SERIOUS!" girl as well...I was in complete shock I think I was speechless then shouted it....then I laughed and I cried and laughed and cried a lot.
I started laughing uncontrollably from the second he got down on one knee. I don't remember saying anything!! There was just hysterical laughter.... followed by screaming... crying... and slobbering all over myself. Seriously, I know how to make a moment special.
He says that before he even asked me I screamed "FINALLY!" lol it sounds like something I'd say in an intimate moment like that, but I just don't remember saying it!
definitely an "are you serious?" girl as well, followed by a "are you sure?" because he had been telling me he wasn't ready yet and didn't think he would be until after he got his CA which is not until next fall!!
hahaha Some really good ones! I'm pretty sure it went something like "OH my god are you serious!?"
