When I was 12, I was convinced I would either be an FBI agent (I even went a year of school for it!) or a sports agent (ala Jerry MaGuire).
My FBI agent dream died when I realized I was flat footed and probably could not get through the academy.
My sports agent dream blew up in smoke when I met a few male sports agents who told me women have no place in sports. I let that get to me and gave up my dream :(
Now, I'm a tech writing but end up doing mostly secretarial tasks. Fall of 2012 I'm going back to school for my MBA or JD.
What about you? What was your wild dream?
I wanted to be a lawyer or an architect. I actually went to school for three years for architecture. I decided it wasn't for me!
Now I work for a touring company in Napa doing sales, and I LOVE it!
I plan on going back to school soon, probably for a business degree.
I didnt have a wild dream per se....at 12, i wanted to design houses ....my bio-father used to design them on napkins...he never did anything with it though....it facinated me and i kept with that dream from age 12 til now....i'm 25 and i'm about 1/4 way through college for my BA in Architecture....have 6 yrs experience working at an architectural firm....and i've lost the passion to be an architect....i still love to design homes though....might do it on the side.....
having one dream for so long....its a scary thing not knowing what i really want to do now.....
I wanted to be an equine vet. I LOVED James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small. I decided not to do that when I realized I could not handle "losing" any of my patients. I am too soft hearted I guess.
Now I'm a business analyst/project manager for a financial firm... but I still horseback ride on weekends.
A physical therapist. I had no idea what they actually did, but I learned they could make a lot of money so I decided that was right up my alley.
That dream fizzled when I learned what they do and how much schooling was involved.
A STAM that didnt have to work! Yes, I really said that to my mom, and she said.. nonono, you can't do that, you have to go to school and have a career and not depend on a man for everything.
@.twist.: LOL. I totally wanted to be a mermaid too at 12. For jobs, I actually wanted to be a marine biologist, but then I realized I actually needed to live by water for that…
I wanted to be an actress or a lawyer... now I am going to be a cop. I hate sitting in an office doing nothing but paperwork so practicing law was out of the question! And I still love to act, but I also love stable money a lot too!
@bellagio: heh! Once I realized that a mermaid was far stretch for career options I figured I'd be a lawyer.
I ended up working in Oil & Gas, and going to university to get a Psychology Degree. SOoooooo funny where life takes us and how we change over the years.
@bellagio: I wanted to be a marine biologist too! lol - now I'm graduating with an Industrial Engineering degree in the fall. I still would like to volunteer at the aquarium though!
Haha, I grew up around a bunch of boys in our neighborhood, so I was convinced I was going to play in the WNBA. LOL. I wore windsuit pants and sports jerseys every day.
Now I am a total girly-girl, and the only sport I did in school was cheerleading, and one day of soccer. Athlete, I am not. I'm now a wedding director for a florist, and I just opened my own event planning company after several years of working as an event director for a hotel.
Not to mention I never grew past 5'0, LOL.
A dancer on Broadway. I could tap dance like no other back in the day.
Now I'm in marketing/fundraising...how the hell did I get here?
I wanted to be a Marine Biologist! I actually followed through with that - I have a B.S. in Marine Bio and a Masters in Biological Oceanography. I studied marine microbiology then, and study human microbiology now. Loved those years spent in the field traveling all over the world!
@stephinPA: Oooh keep on dancing!! I wish I never stopped! I have decided I am going to try to get back into it -@50 years old! :S
I wanted to be a nurse-but I always played teacher to my 3 younger brothers. lol. Still trying to decide-actually I hope to hear on a new job this week -Social services position at a Skilled Nursing Facility!!! Yay!!
I wanted to be a doctor and then a teacher. I went the teacher route but not all the way. I am now starting law school for family law. We'll see how this one pans out.
@heatherkristin: well you can still be a princess :)
A lawyer. That was a real plan until I realized how much schooling is involved... Then I did 2 years for photography. Now I'm completely lost. Oh being young!
When I was 12 I wanted to be an astronaut haha. I went to space camp twice and was obsessed with space. Huge nerd alert. Clearly, I am not an astronaut.
A stay at home mom. Still want to be that. Damn dreams.
Oh, and an author. :)
Not sure about 12, but when I was younger I wanted to be a vet. Still do sometimes! I love so many things it is difficult to choose.
In middle school I wanted to be an attorney like my dad.
I am an artist. Signed up for the most non-straight forward career path possible :/
I wanted to be a cop (because my grandfather was one). The older I got the more I realized I did not want to deal with that crap on a daily basis and see all the ugly in the world.
I wanted to be an interior designer or an art teacher.
I went into teaching, but I haven't found it to be as enjoyable as I thought. (An elementary teacher) I'm currently seeking a different career path.
I wanted to be a mortician. Sounds morbid but it was just what I wanted to do. I was working on my Bachelor's degree and headed to Mortuary School. I kept up with my plan until 2009 when I got a job with the government. With the job security that comes with a government jon and the economy the way it is, I guess that will have to take a back seat. But, the good thing is that I can always do that when I retire...in 2039. LOL.
@Whimsical.Sprite: I went to school for two years for elementary education. It's not as fun as I thought either because of the government/state laws and requirements. So, I went into the medical field for now. I really have no idea what I want to do in life.
I wanted to be a storm chaser! And now I'm in school with a major in Astronomy and minor in Meteorology. So...I'm kind of on the same path?
A paleontologist. I loved dinosaurs so much. I don't remember when/how that dream died, but I am not one. It's kind of sad...I hadn't though about this in a long, long time.
@MissBoPeep: hahahaha
@rachaelrobin: me too! I was even more specific, in the 7th grade I went around telling everyone I was going to be a "vertebrate paleontologist" lol.
I wanted to be an opera singer so I sang all through school and got my BA in vocal performance. When I moved into the city and needed to make money to live, I started working in arts admin and that's where I am now. I also wanted to be a lawyer because both of my parents, my older brother and some family friends are lawyers who all went to the same law school, but I dunno if it's for me or not. A few months ago I thought about going to school to teach high school English. Got admitted to grad school but changed my mind in favor of buying a house. Now I want to try and be a writer. Or own a bookstore. Definitely be a SAHM for a while. We'll see! I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up but it's nice to have options!
This is funny, so when I was young (6-8?) i thought that people at the grocery stores lived there, (same that teachers lived at the school) so i wanted to be a grocery story bagger thinking that i could live there and eat anything i wanted to...(i loved food lol- still do but now in moderation lol) My mom had hopes i would grow out of that and go to college :) i did and now I am in Marketing. but there was also the dream of a singing star (Whitney Houston minus the drugs lol) and I sang for years but went to school for business not voice oh well there is always American Idol lol
I wanted to be a veterinarian.
That was until I shadowed one and actually saw a cow's uterus outside of it's body and the vet trying to "fix it". That's one mental image that has been BURNED into my brain for all eternity. I also saw bulls being de-horned. Pretty bloody.
AND of course I realized I would have to touch creepy animals too.
So much for that dream.
@CTbride2010: hahah your mom must have been so concerned. Esp. since bagger is the lowest job on the chain of status in a grocery store!
@Mrs.tobe: Snap - a vet. But then I realised I wasn't intelligent enough.
I wanted to own a clothing store. I guess really I could still do that except I'm lazy! Now I am a budget analyst for the Army. Not even close!
