Try a different store, all the ones I went to let us take the ring outside to look at it properly.

rosemaryandthyme :  There are many YouTube vids of diamonds in the sunlight. The variable is the diamond quality though so don’t know how useful it will really be.  Is seeing a diamond outside of the store really going to help when you’re actually getting a simulant? There are vids of simulants such as moissanite and cz on YouTube comparing them to genuine diamonds. That may be your best bet.

Eta, do a search on this board, some people have posted comparison videos too.

Well for sure they will look the most beautiful under the jeweler lights. They also look amazing in places like reception hall lighting. I find mine looks especially fire-y and awesome in one of my supermarkets and at the bank counter!

Some lower clarity stones will look pretty nice when hit with light, but some can look not so good and washed out in sunlight.

If this is a concern, then make sure you get a really good clarity at least a VS2 (or maybe a really good SI1) with an Ideal / Excellent cut since those will look great in most every place other than in the dark. But in the size you want, it will cost you.

northwinds :  agree, mine is excellent cut too, makes all the difference.  Op said she’s actually getting a large simulant.  She just wants the Moissanite type/cut that looks the most “diamond-like” in all lighting.

rosemaryandthyme :  if you are getting a moissy, would you be open to an old cut? Like old European cut or old mine cut or august vintage cushion cut? Supposedly the older cuts really mimic old cut diamonds the best. I was in the market for one since I love the old cuts but have paused my search but that’s what I would get if “most diamond like” is what your after. Just something to consider, good luck! 🙂

rosemaryandthyme :

This a F1 H&A 6.5mm in the sunlight.  This is the stone I was sent by Fire and Brilliance.

My diamond doesn’t sparkle nearly as much as my moissy, but it’s still gorgeous. In my opinion moissy has better sparkle.

This was my moissy in sunlight

This is my diamond

My moissy really sparkles in and out of the sun. I took this pic in my car under the sun today and right above the center stone you can see a blue light. My Galaxy S7 picked that up.

If you’re looking for what a diamond looks like in natural lighting, you could check out Good Old Gold’s videos on youtube. Jon shows off the diamonds in different lightings (diffused, spotlight, mega spotlight, and indoor natural light). Also, as other Bees have mentioned, the cut makes a HUGE difference. Different shapes will have different types of light performance/light play. Even within the same cut, a mediocre vs an ideal cut can make a world of a difference in terms of light performance. Hope this helps!

rosemaryandthyme :  My husband got me an excellent-cut diamond because the cut and clarity was more important to him than carat size. My finger is a 4.25 so my diamond is about 0.5 carats but a perfect size to me. I didn’t know much about diamonds so I let him choose.

My ring shines like crazy in every store because of the fluorescent lights, not just in jewelry stores. It also sparkles like crazy in the sunlight or even when I’m walking in the dark at night and there’s some light coming from a street lamp.

I don’t know anything about moissanite, but if you’re looking for sparkle in a diamond, then definitely look at the cut and clarity more than the carat size.

I have a 1.47 hearts and arrows cut RB diamond.  When I’m outside it either looks super white, or it sparkles all different colors.  Either way it’s gorgeous 🙂

I dont think any of my diamonds look as good/sparkly as the ones in stores lol that lighting is engineered for a reason! Yeah my stones are pretty and sparkle but they’re kinda lame on cloudy days or indoors. I also think the larger stones sparkle less- I’ve grown to admire the half carat ring I have more than my 1 carat solitaire.

No moissys look same as real diamond. Get a cluster or halo then a small diamond won’t look sooo small.
