All I’ve read is “like period cramps” except I’ve not had period cramping, I was a back ache sufferer.
So I’m 8.5 weeks and my cramps up to this point have been lower in the pelvic region and sharp intermittent which I’ve been told are normal.
This afternoon I started having pains in my abdominal region which feels like I’ve pulled a muscle. Not excruciating or anything and no blood. It could even be 100% unrelated to pregnancy.
I leave tomorrow on a 12 day trip, so I can’t get in to see my midwife.

@awakemysoul: I called my OB all the time about cramps… and they really said there’s nothing to worry about unless there’s bleeding. your uterus is going thru so much growing!
I think if you were stuck in bed hunched over all in sharp sharp pain, it would be something to worry about! but otherwise I think its pretty normal :]

When I miscarried I actually had NO cramps through my bleeding which I found really weird. Everything just fell out… I usually get very severe crampin on my heavy days so it was definitely an unusual feeling to bleed so heavily without cramps.
What you’re describing sounds more like round ligament or your uterus stretching from the growing baby inside you. Unless you see blood, I don’t think you should worry. You’re in for a fairly wide variety of abdominal discomfort in the next 30 weeks.

@awakemysoul: I had similar pains in my side. I was told exactly what @MrsRugbee: , it is round ligament pain or my uterus stretching. I only had that pain in that spot one night and it was gone by the next morning.

@MrsRugbee: That was my first thought, too!
Round ligament pain. I get it every third or fourth time I stand up, and it HURTS! It’s more in the stomach and less in the vag-area.

When I miscarried, it was excruciating pain – I can’t really explain it but it was nothing like period cramps….it was extremely painful. Think writhing on the bathroom floor in tears because the pain was so extreme. Sounds like you’re dealing with normal pregnancy stuff, so try not to worry too much about it. 🙂

Yeah, I never had period cramps either but these cramps were so painful I can’t even think straight cramps and also had bleeding/ spotting.

Hopefully this makes you feel better – none of my miscarriages ever started with cramps. The cramps came a day or more after bleeding had started. Oddly enough, this is my first healthy pregnancy and I felt a lot more crampy/stretching in the first trimester than I did in the pregnancies that ended in MC.
Try not to worry! It’s just your uterus stretching which is a good thing! :))

Thanks everyone, rational me knew it was likely normal, but I’m a worry wart.

@awakemysoul: Sounds like round ligament pain! I started getting it at 6 weeks and still get it. MAN do they ever hurt, it doesn’t last long but they hurt so bad. Can be scary.
But the good news is those pains are normal. Miscarriage cramps tend to feel like extreme PMS cramps and can double you over, but will be accompanied by bleeding. If you’re not bleeding you’ll be just fine! 🙂

I had a lot of cramping in my first trimester. I mean a lot and it always worried me but my midwife told me unless I’m doubled over in excruciating pain or bleeding not to worry. As pps have mentioned there is a lot going on in there. =]

One of my miscarriages hurt while it was happening and one did not. I was quite sick and sore after both though.
