At least twice a month we do a date night or a day date - in the past couple of months we have done: bowling, movies, went to 2 live band shows, explored a new bar, weekend trip to NYC, laser tag, state fair, made homemade pizza, and went out to dinners (some old some new.)
We take off to the coast, and spend the day walking on the beach and having summertime food! :)
Since I'm also in law school, I can relate to being really busy! We try to go out every Friday night though, that way I still have some fun (or I'd go crazy) and I don't feel like a whole day is wasted (well, not wasted but you know what I mean). IF I had a whole day off, I would love to go hiking all day followed up by a good brewery at night!
When we have a weekend to ourselves, we do something outside! We will go dirtbiking, 4-wheeling, shooting guns, etc. And we will normally go out to dinner, then come home and watch a movie!
@AnnieAAA: Oh my word, you guys sound like such a busy and fun couple! I'd love to take a weekend trip somewhere--maybe over DH's winter break. :) And I personally know that he would love to play laser tag!
@creativeplannertobee: Ohhh, I love that! It sounds relaxing and outdoorsy--my kind of day!
@lawyer2bee: I'm glad someone can relate to the law school craziness! We definitely try to sneak in at least one date night a week (like you, he's go crazy if we didn't!), but we are so looking forward to having a whole day to ourselves. I love the idea of a hike and a yummy dinner--that way you get out and pack in a full day of activity, and then reward yourself with guilty pleasure food. Yes!
@Rosie Girl: I love this, too! We also swing between wanting to get out and do things and staying at home, snuggling on the couch with a good movie. Why not do both? :)
Well, I work every other weekend, so it feels like a treat when I am off. That being said, I AM off this weekend! WOOOOO! Anyways, FI already told me the other day that he wants to rent movies tomorrow night and cuddle on the couch. <3 As for Saturday, I'll get some cleaning/laundry done and then Sunday is another relaxing night. He'll probably watch football all day, but I'll enjoy every second being by his side and relaxing.
@parasol: yeah it's definitely a rarity to get a whole day together so enjoy it!! You'll have to let us know what you end up doing!
We have every weekend off together at the moment, which is heaven, so we watch a ton of movies, go for walks/hikes, I am teaching FI how to golf, he comes to barn with me to see the horses, we shop, visit family, clean the house (boring), we go bowling, play pool, swim, eat out for lunch or breakfast or dinner depending on our mood, hang out with friends, I read while he plays video games etc etc etc. We do lots of stuff, but I am always looking for more things to do.
@MissPumpkinPie: Yay for a weekend off! You two sound like our kind of people--cuddling on the couch with a good movie is how we like to roll! :)
@lawyer2bee: We will! I was definitely extremely excited when he told me his Friday classes had been cancelled and he was taking the whole day off. :) Right now we're thinking of going to the beach and visiting a museum, followed by a relaxing dinner out at our favorite brewery. I want to get my fill of pumpkin ale before the season ends!
@parasol: Oh yeah, we love it. =) We used to have a date night once a week or two, but money is a bit tight right now. They were fun because the entire day was spent going out and just doing random things.
It really depends on the season. During the summer we do alot of hiking & grilling out, also alot of golfing! Dinner dates, movies, take our dog to the park & have a picnic, sometimes we go play basketball at the park, go swimming. When we can we go to Nascar races, also. Usually two-three trips during the spring/summer season.
During the winter, dinner dates, movies, we have friends over for a game night (we do that in the summer also.) A few times we have been bowling & skating, even went ice skating once. :P Oh & also during the fall/winter season we go to some football & basketball games, but just a few. Last winter we went to a ski resort & went snow tubing for 5 hours straight! We are going back for our anniversary! :-)
We visit our parents on the weekend, also. When we go to my parents we do an all day trip since they live farther away. When we visit his Mom we do dinner then stay a few hours.
Otherwise we stay home & watch movies, relax, cook, ect.
In a few weeks (November 25th) we are going out of state close to Ohio to visit a beautiful little town for the weekend, for my husband's birthday. We are doing a tour, sight seeing & visiting a few museums. I love weekend getaway trips so much & when we can do one we never pass it up!
When it is nice we get a pic-a nick- basket and go hang out in the park. OR we will play in the snow or the big ice formations that from on the river in the winter and pretend to be penguins ( don't judge) :)
Movies, video games, and everyonce and a while if we don't have work, we will do some of the activites the colleges put on.... 2 weeks ago we went on a ghost hunt. :)
In the warm seasons (read: March-December here in FL) we like to do outdoorsy things during the day: tennis, go for a jog in the park, play volleyball with friends, bike ride around the city and explore. We used to hike when I'd visit in CA and take a picnic basket - now we go to the lake around here, set up a beach chair, swim and eat a delicious picnic lunch :) Of course it's CFB season, so we're mostly going to games during the weekend now. At night we try out new adventurous recipes or go discover a new hole-in-the-wall restaurant, preferably with a band :) Then snuggle down and watch Netflix-ed shows with Nutella milk.
Saturday nights are usually our date night. We either go out to the movies, go watch the hockey game at the sports bar, have some drinks. We always try to keep Sat nights for ourselves. If it's not date night, we spend it with our friends hanging out.
On the rare occasion that DH and I have a day off together (different work schedules) we usually spend the day in our pajamas playing video games. If we feel like going out, we'll go to the aquarium or stroll around one of the local botanical gardens.
@ Mrs.Estep It was! Except FI thinks I'm a witch because I was the olny one that the rods and emf light up thing worked for. :( lol
@imalittlebirdie: LOL My husband & I love anything paranormal. Ghosts, Aliens, ect. :P
@Genuine513: Wow, you are so active! I love it! We're always looking for new things to do as well, and I love all your suggestions!
@Mrs.Estep: Great point about the seasons! I love the fall and doing fall things, like going to chop down a Christmas tree and drinking apple cider. Is it too early to do that?? Growing up, my parents always made us wait until after Thanksgiving to get our tree. :) And have fun in Ohio! I'm sure you guys will have a ton of fun!
@imalittlebirdie: I don't judge at all! These all sound like a blast! And let me just say, there are things that DH and I like to do that we always joke will be easier to explain why we like to do them when we finally have kids (i.e. going to the park and doing cartwheels). Also, what is a ghost hunt? It sounds kind of awesome and a little scary!
@MrsWrangler: I love all these ideas! They sound like so much fun! Any good adventurous recipes you'd recommend? My DH loves to cook (I'm trying to appreciate it more and get better at it), and we love trying new food. :)
@couawilou: That's so good that you keep a standing date night! It's so healthy for a relationship. We also try to do one date night each week, but the day usually changes depending on DH's schedule.
@linguo42: Can I just say how much I love pajama days? Because I do! Not getting dressed is like the best thing in the world!
It's movietime for us! We'll get something on Netflix and each pick a movie, eat junk food, and snuggle. Yay!
@parasol: All my cookbooks are at home buuuuut I would just go to foodgawker.com, close your eyes, and pick something at random - Never had anything I've hated from there :) And there's such a huge selection that you can go to the bottom, pick a category, and have thousands of options!
@Miss Longcoat: Love that idea! I think we need to finally get Netflix. I used to mooch off of my mom, but she changed her pw. Grrr--I may have to just pay up!
@MrsWrangler: Thanks for the recommendation! I'll definitely check that out! I love anything tasty, and I'm always impressed when I can make it myself. :)
Our best day off together was spent at the zoo, otherwise we'll go to a local festival (if there's one happening), hit up a wine tasting, wander through antique shops, etc.
@parasol: haha Never to early! Idk though, a real tree it might be to early just yet?
We use a fake one so I can breathl. LOL But otherwise a real one would be so beautiful! When we get a house big enough we plan to do a real one! :-)
We already have ours up.
lol We couldn't wait! haha We had it up this early last year as well. Oh well. :P We have been drinking down the hot cocoa since early October, also. lol
Thanks! Its actually in West Virginia, but right along the Ohio river.
@thirdtimebride: OK, the zoo and wine tasting sound amazing! I may be in my twenties, but I still love the zoo as much as I did as a kid. And everything is better with wine. :)
@Mrs.Estep: So true! I definitely want a real tree because I love the smell, but I don't want it to be a dead mess on Christmas day. I'm starting to see the benefits of getting a fake tree...
And I'm jealous of all your fall/Christmasy activities! I'm in Southern California, and October was so incredibly hot, so no hot cocoa for us yet. Thankfully, things are finally cooling down here, and I'm determined to do some fall-ish things because I love fall so much! WV must be so lovely right now! I seriously just want to get all bundled up, grab a cup of hot chocolate, and go for a walk amongst the pine trees. That sounds amazing!
We don't have a lot of money at the moment (grad student and new homeowner) so we do a lot of stuff at home. Our most recent and fun date night was that we went camping in the backyard. We pitched a tent, lit a bonfire and grilled up a delicious dinner. Then made s'mores and sat around the fire with glasses of wine and just chatted. It was really fun!
I LOVE date days. Since we live close to DC we will go downtown and explore the monuments or just walk around. One day I surprised him by taking him to a few record stores in the area and then we went out to lunch. On Saturday we are going to a winery because we have a Living Social deal for a tasting!
In the summer we are outside every weekend going to the beach, having a cookout with friends, laying in the sun and drinking, going for walks and anything else that keeps us outside.
In the Spring and Fall we do like to get outside still as long as the weather is good. We will hike, go to the park, have cookouts, go to a friends, or shoot guns. We also run errands.
Currently most weekends we spend time with friends, play flag football and watch football on Sunday. We also take a lot of weekend trips with friends to New Hampshire and Maine and day trips to NYC.
I hate sitting still so I am always making him go somewhere with me even if it is just into the city.
@MsMonkey: What a fun idea! We're always looking for cheap things to do (like you, money isn't free-flowing these days), and camping in the backyard sounds amazing! I'm seriously craving s'mores right now. Mmmmm.
@PitBulLover: Oh, I'm jealous! I love DC, and so does DH, but we've never been together! I so would love to go there for a day or two and just explore everything. And have fun at the wine tasting this weekend! It's so nice when you score something fun for a good deal!
Does yard and house work count as fun?? I guess it does for us! We like having full days off to leisurely work on the yard or garden, or fix and build stuff around the house. We just about finished building our bed, next project is a dresser.
Our typical Saturdays include things like going on a hike, taking our dog to the dog park, seeing a movie, eating out for lunch, and cooking dinner together at home. We also like to go to Barnes and Noble and just hang out in the cafe with some tea and books and magazines.
Where is this pumpkin ale that you talk about? ;)
@parasol: I love DC too! Even though I've lived in the area all my life I still love going to see all the monuments. When we first moved back to VA after college that was the first thing I had DH do because he had never seen all the monuments!
Are there any local museums or landmarks you guys could go visit? Or maybe you could pick a random town and go explore there?
We do date nights too! Usually something fun like bowling, the cinema - eating out somewhere we like.
Every evening we walk the dog together - it's nice because you can catch up with the other without other distraction, spend time in the fresh air and that's lovely after being stuck at work for the rest of the day!
Sometimes we go shopping, have a coffee date or just take a ride out somewhere and visit :)
We do hillwalking whenever our days off match :)
We are currently trying to climb all the Munros (mountains in Scotland), we both love climbing and it gives us a chance to get away from everything and just talk and enjoy each others company, plus we get to drive around the north of Scotland with all that beauty!

Happy Thursday, bees! In anticipation of the coming weekend (yes!), I want to know what type of fun things you and your SO get up to when you take the day off and plan a fun day-long date. DH is in law school, and since it's the end of the semester, he is really busy with studying and hasn't taken a bonafide day-off in weeks. He finally has a true day-off (which means no studying!) coming up, and we want to do something really fun! We have a few ideas, but I'd love to hear what kind of fun stuff you and your SO get up to when you spend the day together. Plus, who doesn't like a happy thread where you can discuss date ideas? :)
