I think I’ll stick with their first names. It’s what I feel comfortable with.

First names only.  I could never call them mom/dad…I could never be comfortable with it regardless, but especially because I’m not close to them

First names ever since the day I met them. I would never call them Mom and Dad because they’re not my parents. My mother raised me and no one gets the honor of that title but her. As for Mr. & Mrs., it would never happen. I know it’s customary in some regions but I don’t think I could marry into a family with such formality. Not my cup o’ tea.

@Ms.Sugarsnap:  My future in-laws told me I could call them mom or dad, but they said this over e-mail. I haven’t told them I don’t feel comfortable with that, so I basically just avoid calling them anything to their faces. I call them by their first names when talking about them with other people. I don’t want to hurt their feelings, so I’m not sure how to approach the whole name thing.

I call them by their names. Very rarely I will call my FMIL “Mutti” (she’s Austrian and it’s a sweetened up form of Mother), but I will only ever call my FFIL by his name.

And they never said “You can call me such-and-such” one day. I always called FMIL by her first name, and before she was married to FFIL, I called him Mr. Such-and-such. It just changed when they got married and I started dating FI.

I will never ever call them mom or dad, ever. Mutti is okay because it’s german and doesn’t have the same feeling as if I had called my own mother that for my whole life.

I think about this all the time lol. I’ve always called FILs by their first names, and I can’t imagine switching to “mom” and “dad” once we are married. I’m not comfortable calling them Mr. and Mrs. either because it’s way too formal. They are also “cool” if you will, so the only thing that seems appropriate is to call them by their first names, which I also feel funny about sometimes because I feel like I should be showing more respect. LOL so confusing!

@Ms.Sugarsnap:  For years I just didn’t call them anything lol! But then at some point I had to call his mother and I was like “oh man now I have to say SOMETHING…” so I just dove in with a first name. I think that is what they wanted anyway, if they were super traditional or formal maybe I’d have started with Mr/Mrs and waited for a correction, but it worked for me

I call them John and Jane, but I started out with Mr. and Mrs. when I first met them.  They instantly insisted on John & Jane, though.  I will never call them mom and dad!

I’ve always called them by their first names. If our nephews are around I call them Nana and Pops, which is what the kids call them.

@Ms.Sugarsnap:  Lol, this sounds like what might happen to me. It seems the longer you go without calling them anything, the harder it is to actually use a name for them.
