Right now im laying on the couch with debilitating cramps. I'm not even exaggerating when I say that...They hurt so bad I might throw up! I took aleve but so far its not helping...what are some things you do to alleviate cramps?

I have cramps that unbearable only when I'm not on the Pill... in that case, I usually take a hot bath, get some exercise, and/or have some chocolate (I know, I'm terrible but vegan chocolate cupcakes are my absolute favorite.)

I also only get terrible cramps when I'm not on the pill but I swore by a hot water bottle on the tummy, and then a little light exercise if you feel up to it.

For the future, go to the doctor and get Motrin 800, it's awesome! It does take awhile to work though (like 2 hours - awful mid-cramps!) so the best thing is to take it before the cramps even start.

So sorry, I know that hideous, nauseating pain, it's just terrible!

My mom makes these rice bag things, basically it is like a pillow made out of thick material (like canvas) filled with rice. You pop it in the microwave and warm it up and then place wherever it aches. When it gets cold you just rewarm it!

As far as medicine I have no advice because even with the worst of pains I refuse to take even a Tylenol :p

PS. Motrin 800 is just the equivalent of 4 regular over the counter Ibuprofin (I have a heart condition and get prescribed 800mg motrin for it sometimes and its no different than the OTC stuff).

Heating pad!  Or take a hot bath.

Also, this doesn't help for this time, but it might work better to take an Aleve/Midol/Advil as soon as you have a TWINGE of a cramp, then continue to take another every 4-6 hours for the rest of the day.

    Hope you feel better soon!!!!

I seriously love extra-strength Midol.  I get horribly debilitating cramps as well and if I take Midol right before my period is supposed to start then I can trick my body and I won't end up having cramps at all because I jump the gun.

Also, try a Magic Bag.  These have really helped me as well.

    Hope they go away soon!

I get bad bad BAD cramps too.. throwing up bad. Heating pad and Advil/Motrin/Pamprin. And then I have this wonderful herbal stuff that works wonders but doesn't have a real name, I buy it at SCA events.

I could never exercise with terrible cramps. No way.  My usual method is to roll on my bed, moan, scream, punch the pillow, and have someone bring me lots of Advil (it's the only pill that works for me on cramps) while I rely on a hot water bottle for fleeting warmth and comfort.  If I can make it there, I sit in the bathtub and turn the shower on hot with its heaviest flow setting, and let it hit my abdomen.  And cry.  And hope I can fall asleep.

The screaming actually makes me feel a lot better. Try it, I swear.  It's okay to be a wuss every once in a while.  Cramps really, really suck.

Everyone says a heating pad, but my problem always is that if I have terrible cramps the heating pad does help but my body also starts to overheat because it is just on overdrive. Sooo I usually lay in bed with a heating pad, but with a fan on my face at the same time.

I definitely don't exercise at the peak of cramps.  Like I said, me and the couch with a hot water bottle.  But, I find once they're just regular cramps again exercise can help not get worse again.

Heating pad, Midol, and hot chamomile tea.  When I used to have really bad cramps I would lean over a kitchen stool so it pressed on my stomach but I am not sure that is good advice, lol, I think any pressure relieves the cramps though.

I agree with the hot tea. I have HORRIBLE cramps and usually take the 800 Motrin IB and have my heating pad handy too. Try to avoid sweets and salty foods. I also learned that taking my meds EXACTLY 4 hours on the hour helps to keep them at bay as well.

Oh...and get your FI to rub your belly too. The warmth from my FI's hands makes me feel great. :)

I know everyone says heating pad, but heating pads make me puke!  When I'm not on hormonal BC I get horrible cramps and my hormones go in overdrive making me have hot flashes (fun!).  I usually drink some wine (pretty much the only time I ever drink alcohol) and then I just lay on the couch with the A/C on full blast and a fan and moan.  I would to take Ibuprofen 800, but it never helped enough.  I try to fall asleep and hope it's better when I wake up (easier said than done).

ETA - Oh yeah sometimes I force my dog to sit on my stomach.  Pressure makes things feel better and my dog is just the right weight (15lbs)!

@IvyBride11: yes! I always take my meds exactly every four hours too, and that usually works very well.

SO glad i'm not the only one that has this problem!  Im not on the pill and never have been, so i'm scared i'm going to get cramps/my period on my wedding day.  I get horrible cramps the first 2 days of my period, Its the worst pain ever.  I take 4 motrin, use a heating pad or take a bath and do pregnancy breathing and lots of visualization.  Sounds weird, but i close my eyes and breath and just try to "think away" the pain.  I wish there was something else to make it go away!  I did get prescribed a vicodin from my gyno because nothing else usually helps it, but I hate taking any strong meds, so i usually just skip it.

First off, if you haven't discussed this with your doctor, it would probably be a good idea to make sure that everything is okay. Cramps so bad that you throw up are definitely outside the normal range (yes, this can happen to women and they can be okay, but it's something that should be checked out).

I've found that Aleve helps me the best because it lasts so long-12 hours. Like everyone here has said, taking your pain killers on a regular schedule is helpful because it keeps the levels of the drug constant in your body so you don't get break through pain. I find that taking 2 Aleve as soon as cramps start and then taking 1 every 12-14 hours for the first day or two of my period helps considerably.

I also use a microwavable heating pad, mostly to help me fall asleep at night.

Mine are so bad that I have been prescribed a hardcore anti-inflammatory med that is intended for severe arthritis. My doctor also said that Celebrex works well too. It is another med intended for migrains. In the past, I was prescribed Soma as well, but I didn't think it helped all that much. Valerian root is a good alternative for helping your relax a little bit too and that is available OTC.

I second those bees who indicate taking ibuprofen at the first twinge of cramps works. It is the only thing that works for me. I usually take 4 or 5 every few hours (same as a prescription dose but use OTC pills). If I don't or take them late....i'm in bad shape...like vomiting for hours and wanting to kill myself to ease the pain. Makes me really hate being a girl sometimes.

i start taking prescription motrin a few days before i know my period is going to start and i also go on an intense fiber diet. the combination of the two virtually leaves me with no cramps! this is the only method that has ever worked for me.

Alternate between a heating pad and a hot bath. Pain relievers don't work for that sort of thing, at least for me.

Nurofen, Ponstan, Wheat bag, and cups of sweet tea. I have Depo Provera injections and I don't really get my period anymore (and no pain) but when I wasn't on any contraception I had such bad pains I used to vomit and a few times I passed out because of them, so I know what you're going through! I was actually put on the pill to help my pains and it did. Good luck!

The pet on the abdomen thing works for me, too!  I'm dealing with horrible cramps right now and presently my warm and heavy cat is curled up on my tummy and it is heaven!  That plus four advil work for me.

Heating pad and ibuprofren work for me!!! We have one of those microwave heating pads that I just love. 1 minute in the microwave and it's ready to go. I love it. I use it for cramps, back pain, etc.

I stay away from soy products and then start taking the anti inflammatory meds BEFORE the period starts. Like at least 2 days prior. I was originally prescribed Celebrex for this, but now I just take a prescription strength ib profen.

I still get horrible cramps on the pill, but off of it -- I couldn't even go to work.

I use those one-use heating pads that stick to your panties- I use extra high granny panties for such an occasion. They are in the muscle-ache/back pain section at the pharmacy.

Honestly, nothing worked that well for me until I went on the pill. It amazes me how debilitating it was. A heating pad and popping Ibuprofen like candy helped some.

I've dealt with cramps since I was a teenager and took Iburprofen like a champ each time my monthly bill arrived.  Unfortunately, over the years, the medicine has torn up my stomach.  Now when I take Ibuprofen I get searing stomach pains on top of my cramps.  Sometimes it's worth it as the stomach pain seems to be a bit more tolerable than the pelvic cramps that rip through my body.  However, last month that all changed when I STARTED MY PERIOD EARLY ON MY HONEYMOON, took a dose of Ibuprofen for my cramps, and then spent 2 days in such awful stomach pain, we thought we'd have to make a trip to the ER... DID I MENTION THAT THIS WAS ON OUR HONEYMOON??  So, I'll need to tweak my monthly process in order to deal with the lady pain.  Usually it was to pop the standard 2 ibuprofen (never more than that initial dose due to the tummy pain) and then wait it out with my heating pad.  Now I'm unsure what to do...

TMI alert- My doctor told me having an orgasm helps.  But please... when I'm crampy, the last thing on my mind is anything having to do with 'down there'.

Some of you mentioned Celebrex... does this really help?  I've tried Tylenol but of course that doesn't touch the pain.  I'm needing to find something that won't upset my stomach.  We're definitely not wanting a repeat of last month (though I'm wondering if the post-wedding destress may have also had something to do with my sudden period onset and terrible reaction to the Ibuprofen).

Before I started taking the pill I had horrible cramps!!! Also I am one of those lucky girls who has a tilted uterus, so I get the extreme joy of having cramps in my front and in my lower back.

What helped me was getting out of bed and walking around, or if I was up for it, go to the gym. It sounds crazy but working out will increse your bloodflow and it will help with your cramps. But if I still had mind numbing cramps I would drink some "sleepy time tea" pop some midol, eat some toast and take a long nap.

I use my wheat bag (similar to the rice bags mentioned above but filled with wheat and lavender - smells delicious AND calming!) and usually pop a neurophen if it's really awful.

Oh, and I get DH to give me a shoulder massage/back rub - it just takes my mind off the pain. And it's nice. Win-win ;)

My cramps have always been horrible...throwing up, hot flashes, doubling over, dizziness!! I usually drink some hot tea. If you have a Whole Foods they have a tea called "Women's Moon Cycle" made just for this and it helps! Also, take Naproxen ( I get the generic version from Wal-mart), put on heating pad, and try to go to sleep!! My FI also rubs my belly when I'm with him.

Red wine always helps me.  It helps thin the blood and just all around make you feel better... sounds weird but doesnt hurt to try right?
