I find i get through my work pretty quickly (office job). This is helped by the fact that i sit right near my boss so while other people have the freedom to chat to each other throughout the day i feel like i have to be on my best behaviour all the time in case i’m being watched which feels really isolating sometimes but it’s not like i can ask to move as i have no real reason to justify moving. So some days i find i’ve finished the majority of my work by the middle of the day then i’ve got another 4 hours pondering what i’m going to do to look busy, especially quiet days like today when it’s a Friday!
I can’t surf the net because it’s clear as day to anyone walking past or if my boss happens to turn around (i am right now though with the window minimized cuz my boss is in a meeting). I really hate where i sit! I know i’m not the only one in my team who isn’t always busy either though but at least they can hide behind their desks and the boss can’t see them. I can’t exactly offer to help anyone else as i’m not specialised in their areas and they don’t have enough to do themselves lol. I am sure there are a lot of people in the same boat. I do have busy periods but not all the time so if i blurt out i don’t have enough work to do then i’m bound to get swamped with a whole lot of crappy jobs that i don’t need on a day when i am actually busy. It’s not that i’m lazy i get all of my work done and i’m always on top of things. What do you do to look busy when you’re not?

Its rare that I’m not busy at work, but if it happens, I straighten up my desk and prepare for when I’m busy/help coworkers. I always ask if there’s anything I can do to help if I have nothing going on.

I usually have something I can do. If I get bored I go work in the field or flex the rest of the day (go home).

I’m a bartender. I make up new drinks. I’m also a first grade teacher. I don’t get bored in that job.

aquastar: Unlike you, we are actually encouraged to surf the net when we are not busy. consequently, I spend time on WeddingBee.

Having worked office jobs and loathing doing nothing, I am that annoying person wandering around asking if there’s anything I can help with. Even if they do stuff over my head, maybe they need copies made or a new pen or a binder from the supply closet. And I never cared that it might get me laid off or let go… I am miserable not doing SOMETHING.
I’d organize the supply room/closet/area, fill printer paper, empty the shredder, clean the break room… I didn’t care as long as I had something to do.
You do have a point that if you offer your self up for extra you could bet bombarded but that’s countered by knowing your workload and limits. If you’re going to offer to help when you aren’t busy you will have people coming to you for help. You have to be able to say “No, I’m sorry, I really can’t take that on right now.” or “Sorry, normally I’d love to but I’m really swamped right now.”.
So far those attitudes have gotten me recognition of a hard worker and helping out plus promotions that wouldn’t normally have happened for someone in my position(s).
I’d love to say I’m a go getter… but darn, I just really hate being bored at work and don’t like to goof off at work if I can help it. 🙂

julies1949: wow you’re lucky! wish it wasn’t so strict here
i think of so many things i could get done in that time i have free at work it would be nice to have the option to leave early to get the stuff u need done outside of work while places are still open etc or even things that i need the computer for i can’t do them without people being able to see. It is frowned upon here to be surfing the net even though ive seen my boss do it on the odd occassion. Oh well ive been here 8 years, 2 more until long service leave!
