When i get sick, I don't do anything after work (if i go at all) - I put on PJs, curl up on the sofa, and fall asleep by 9. Unforrrtunnately you probably have too much to do this week to do that. Do you have anyone that would help you finish up projects, or to bring you dinner? I'm sorry you're getting sick at such a bad time!
Sleep
I'd go to the doctor's office. Ear drops to fend off an ear infection and some antibiotics in case you wake up feeling like ass tomorrow. If it's a cold, you may just have to tough it out but she may be able to give you a prescription decongestant to dry you up BIG time. I have sudafed which helps but the Rx works insanely good. I got sick a Monday before a friend's wedding (which was a Saturday) and my dr gave me a Z-pack. She said she normally likes to let it run its course, but with a wedding on a boat coming up, she said this would help kill it all off and buy me a few more days
Get some Afrin--that stuff will clear up your nasal passages BIG time.
Also a neti pot is helpful. Albeit weird and gross.
I hope you feel better soon, spaniel =(. I'd take your cold for you if i could! But, ti's only Wednesday, chances are you'll feel MUCH better by Friday
Go to bed an hour or two early, if you can! I have started doing a netti pot when I feel sick, it flushes your sinuses with salt water and really clears up congestion and prevents infection. Kind of gross to think about, but it works!
I second the neti pot. it's gross, but you'll feel amazing afterward. My other suggestion is to drink hot water with lemon and honey in it. Its great for sore throats (I would not add tea, unless its strictly herbal, though you can add/use other teas, because sometimes even the small amount of caffeine in tea can make symptoms worse). I usually just make it straight lemon and honey water.
I would go to the Dr straight away get a Z-PAK and sleep. Explain that your wedding is this weekend
Once you have the Z-PAK sleep sleep sleep and drink lots of liquids....You will def feel better for Saturday......Good Luck Spaniel!
Sending the Mr. out for a neti pot. ;) I've always meant to try one anyway...
Thanks for the hot water and lemon rec. I always think that would be a good idea, but reflexively grab a bag of green tea everytime I boil water! I will remember not to this time.
Unfortunately my doctor is 25 miles (and, well, an hour and a half) away, so no time for that... I wonder if my old Flonase prescription is still good? That was always helpful for allergies, at least.
Thanks for the advice!
Ha! The Flonase expires this month! But I already feel a little better. ;)
Afrin is over the counter. Allergy medicine doesn't do the same as Afrin, which is specifically for colds! My allergy meds don't do SQUAT when i'm sick. They work with different receptors than when you get sick. I take astelin and nasonex tho.
If it's your regular doctor--maybe you can call and plead and they can fax you over a prescription?
I've never heard of Afrin... maybe I'll ask him to look for that, too?
My "doctor" is actually whichever NP is available at my student health center. I'm not sure they'd fax a prescription to another pharmacy, but I guess I could try. They are REALLY not helpful most of the time.
yikes. I hope you feel better soon. keep us updated.
Zicam. I swear by it for colds. The second I feel that little tickle in the back of my throat I start taking them every 4 hours. I've rarely had a cold last more than a couple days since I started (and the symptoms never get worse than they were when I started taking the Zicam).
Might not help now that your cold has progressed, but could be worth a shot.
Okay, so I figured out the solution: go get your face threaded. It hurt so much I forgot about my cold for HOURS. ;)
Thanks all for the advice! I'm feeling okay after all of the above (and I will try the Afrin tomorrow if I still need it, since I already took the Flo-Nase). Hopefully I don't need to try, though!
Forgive me if this is dumb, but what does getting your face threaded entail? I am imagining all sorts of torture like scenerios and thinking surely you didn't do that willingly :P
Definitely the neti pot and you could go to a same day care and get a cortisone shot. Those really help clear me up instantly. In fact, I got one yesterday and I was feeling better within a couple of hours. Also, lots of water to flush out the bug. My fi is a big fan of sweating it out meaning he puts lots and lots of layers on and covers up with blankets. I can't stand it but it works for him.
Not sure if you subscribe to any natural health practices, but I always take Echinacea tincture with Goldenseal when I have the beginnings of a cold. It has to be the tincture though, not pills. You mix a dropper of the tincture with a small amount of water, let a little sit in the back of your throat, then swallow. Do it three times a day.
All of the other suggestions are great too! REST, fluids, vitamin C, neti pot, herbal tea (licorice root tea is also good for sore throats), and lemon water with honey. Feel better Spaniel!
@OttawaBride: Have you heard of eyebrow threading? It's a hair removal technique, but I had it done on my entire face. It was probably as tortuous as you are imagining, but no risk of immediately pre-wedding burning like with waxing.
I always load up on vitamin C (put those Emergen-C packets into a glass of orange juice for a super shot of C!) I also take echinacea (herb that boosts immunity) and Zicam (a homeopathic remedy to the common cold and flu.) All of these are available over-the-counter at your local drugstore.
More than anything - sleep as much as you can (could be tough with the wedding this weekend!) and DRINK WATER. Seriously, I think copious amounts of water is the best possible cold remedy.
Good luck! I just know I'm bound to get sick before my big day, so I will be stocking up on the above mentioned remedies and bringing them with me!
@Spaniel - The hubs and high usually go for the green tea but we get the one without caffeine. Before pregnancy, I would drink Emergen-c or TheraFlu - Lemon flavored. The hubs tends to rely on DayQuil daytime.
My suggestion, is lots of fluids and rest.

I've been feeling a little run-down this week already, but today I woke up with a sore throat, was very congested, and my chest was pounding. And, um, my wedding is this weekend. What are your tried and true methods for fighting an oncoming cold?
So far I've taken some Sudafed (clear the sinuses, although the chest pounding is worse), Claratin (helps with the dizziness from the sinus stuff), raw garlic (I have heard it's anti-everything--bacterial, viral, fungal...), and orange juice (presumably for the vitamin C, but really just because I smell like garlic now ;).
