DH and I are training for a half marathon, and my appetite is out of control! I don't run/work out to lose weight, so I am trying to supplement the calories I lose with healthy, natural alternatives.  I can't seem to wait for dinner after my run, so I pretty much stuff my face with whatever is close, and somehow I doubt Christmas Tree Snack Cakes are beneficial ;-)

What do you eat for fuel before working out, or after?  My favorites are peanut butter toast, bananas, hard boiled eggs, and unfortunately, Christmas Tree Snack Cakes.  I really need to stop buying those!

oh god. Christmas Tree Snack Cakes....

I'm not dreaming of a white christmas...I'm dreaming of tree cakes....

    yuuummm.

I eat crackers before the gym/after. Can't have heavy stuff. Totally stay away from soup.

I eat a high protein snack before, like Greek yogurt, triscuits/hummus, apple with PB, etc.  I don't usually feel OMG starving after a workout.

ETA: I'm a marathon runner.  Depending on the length of your run, you shouldn't need tooo much replenishment, or you'll negate all the calories you burned.  I've run half marathons on an Odwalla bar with no issues.

I've read that before working out you should eat carbs for quick energy. After, you should eat protein to build muscle.

@soyjoy222: YES! Someone else who understands the joy of Christmas Tree Cakes! So good...and with the crunchy sugar on top...mmmm....

I ate a big bowl of pasta after my last 4 mile run, and thought I was going to throw up all night.  Apparently that was not a good idea.

I work out first thing in the morning, so it might be different for you. I also get bored with food so I switch it up a lot. Some of the things I'll eat about an hour before a workout are:

    • greek yogurt with berries and granola
    • toast with peanut butter
    • english muffin with cheese and egg whites (if I'm really hungry)
    • Protein shakes (I can give you some recipes if you want, but a quick google search will give you tons of ideas. I usually put some whey protein in mine.)
    • a luna bar (if i'm strapped for time)

@hotchildinthecity: I like Greek Yogurt a lot, so I will try that.

That's good to know.  Like I said, I'm not too worried about calories, I just want to make healthy choices afterward.

Marathon runner? That's amazing. Totally jealous!

I have a nonfat yogart for breakfast before hitting the gym in the morning. I can't eat a full meal before, otherwise I'll feel sick.

@hotchildinthecity: I wonder if I just THINK I am hungry because I feel like I should be? I know everyone is different, but DH runs farther than I do with no problems with hunger afterward.  I have a really high metabolism, I wonder if that plays into it.

@Lindsay: Or you could be dehydrated?  Or it could be your high metabolism.  I have a super-slow metabolism.

Also, for quick "recovery" stuff, Gatorade has these new recovery "shakes" that I think are like 120 some-odd calories.  Also, a Gu could kill that omg so hungry feeling and has pottasium and such for recovery.

I usually do a bran muffin or peanut butter toast before the gym. And I always have a green tea, and a vitamin. It gives me a bit of an energy boost, at least I think it does. After the gym, it depends on how hungry I am. I'll do a yogurt, a protien shake, a sandwich, or a wrap usually.

i work out in the morning generally on an empty stomach, but when i go later, i'll have an apple or banana with peanut butter or a bar or some nuts and dried cranberries...if it's after dinner time, i'll have a sweet potato or something - they tend to fill me up without making me obsessively full.  After the gym for some reason i crave dairy - usually granola and milk or ice cream :)

I don't get hungry after the gym if i go late in the day, so i usually wait an hour or so after my run, and then i can eat anything and feel fine (except maybe xmas tree cakes, lol)

I used to eat 4 fig newtons before an intense workout.

I have heard that drinking a glass of chocolate milk within an hour of your workout is very beneficial to you. I know that won't fill you up though ;)

I like to eat some form of fruit after my work out and some rice cakes. I feel like rice cakes are a little more substantial so they fill the void better then many other things.

What I'll sometimes do because I don't get home quickly after the gym is bring a Balance bar or Zone bar and eat a couple bites of that before my workout and then finish the rest of it with some extra water afterward. Works pretty good for me!

@MsBrooklynA: I have heard that, too!

I just started on the greek yogurt thing. It has taken me a while to commit. I like it with granola in it, which adds even more protein.

Am I the only one who likes to eat a FULL heavy meal before? I dont feel like running unless Im full. I watch my calories and protien intake too but it's just easier for me to run if I have a full belly!

@Angelz_love: I don't like to exercise with a full belly, especially running. I can bike when I'm half full, but I don't like to run then. Usually after running, I'm ravenous.

I usually exercise right after I wake up, so I don't eat anything beforehand. Before a race however, I've found that a banana is great or half a bagel.

After I work out, I usually reach for an apple, chocolate milk, almonds, or Greek yogurt.

@MsBrooklynA: Yep, there have been some studies on chocolate milk as a recovery drink: http://www.askmen.com/sports/bodybuilding_200/247_fitness_tip.html

Chocolate milk is what I've been using since I started Insanity, and any workout program that allows chocolate milk in my diet is OK by me. It has a good balance of protein and carbs.

I run after work... usually I just have lunch around 12, a small snack around 4 (usually apples and peanut butter or something), run at 6, and then go home and cook dinner after, which is usually half a chicken breast in some kind of spices and either broccoli or sweet potato or other veggie. I'm also training for a half (yayyy!) but we just started, so we're running in 3mile-2-3 increments during the week and one long run on the weekend (starting with 4 miles and working our way up). Hoping not to get ravenous though cause I AM trying to lose just a bit of weight - 10 lbs or so - and tone up my legs.
