My parents gave me money and a handle of Captain Morgans (my favorite liquor) when I turned 21. :)
A handle is a half gallon. It's called a handle because half gallon bottles of liquor have handles.
Mermaid...have you seen those adorable painted wine/martini/margarita glasses by Lolita? I lo-ove them as 21st birthday presents!
For example, here: http://www.lolitaglasses.com/index.cfm/Birthday_Girl_Martini_Glass_by_Lolita_479.htm
Hey, gals...I should have mentioned, my kiddo is in Toronto and I'm in Oregon. So whatever I get her needs to be something I could/would ship. Also, she is inheriting some money right after her birthday so I don't think I need to send money. Just want to send something that will be special and meaningful for her. She is my baby!
What about a bar tender book? A nice set of shot glasses, martini glasses, beer steins/pints (depending on what she likes)? A kitchen bar set/martini shaker thing?
If she is in Toronto, she has been legally to drink for a couple years now :) I'm sorry I don't have any awesome suggestions though! Maybe tickets to see her favorite band live, or a spa gift certificate for her and a friend?
I was given jewellery for my 21st from my parents. Unfortunately it didn't last :( But I like sentimental gifts like that especially for a 21st (which is a big deal in Aust, usually the biggest party a person has apart from their wedding).
I always get "good jewelry" for big birthdays and events. I inherited my grandmother's bracelet when I got married. I got a pearl set when I turned 18. Diamond earrings for my 21. My sister got a diamond pendant for her 21. We both inherited rings for our 16. My family likes the idea of something lasting. Something we can give our own daughters later.
I was going to suggest jewellery too... that was the main thing I got from family on my 21st. Something classic that she can keep forever.
I don't remember what I got from my family but I know my roomate got a Tiffany's necklace that she had been wanting from her parents and she still wears it a lot so I like the special jewelry idea.
This fall is my sister's 21st and my 30th so we're taking a trip somewhere(haven't worked out the details yet) What about surprising her with a weekend away just the 2 of you, especially if she's on the other side of another country! What about a weekend in NYC?
I agree with the Tiffany's.. what girl doesn't want the blue bag for their b-day? Also, I got a massage gift certificate for my birthday and it was the best gift ever! Something like that, that I don't spend money on myself frequently for, that's what I would want.
how about a Flip video camera - I just got one from my parents and I love it!
My older sister and I both got rings for our 21st birthday. My parents got my older sister a signet ring. They wanted to get me one too, but they searched around and couldn't find one when the time came! They just got me a pretty gold ring instead.
A drinking gift definitely wouldn't make sense if she lives in Toronto. The drinking age is 19 here!

It's my daughter, and she already has an ipod and a 25 year old.
