When I see bees on here talk about choosing one photographer over another, or spending a lot of money on “good” photography, or choosing “good” photography as priority, I always wonder what that means? What are you looking for that makes one photographer better than another? What are people picky about exactly? Other than very obvious stylistic differences (i.e. very editorial inspired), they all look pretty much the same to me and take more or less the same generic shots (shoes, ring, getting ready, etc.)…and maybe I just have nondiscriminating eyes, but they all look pretty good! Our resort gave us a list of 10 photographers as “preferred vendors” and they all look more or less the same to me! Thoughts?

My top two priorities are pictures I like and someone I get along with. If you think they all look basically the same and would be happy with any of them, go for a photographer whose personality meshes with yours the best.
My good friend is an intern so she’s doing my pictures. I love her work and we get along amazingly.

Experience and quality of work are high on my priority list. I also look through their customer reviews available on sites like yelp.com.

@indecisivebee: If the quality of their work seems about even, then meet a couple and choose one that you could see having fun hanging out all day with. Or one that seems most responsive/eager to work with you.

I am not sure if my eye is astute enough to tell the difference between a 10 level of quality work versus a 7. I see photographer’s prices range from $1200-$10,000 and I don’t think I can tell too much of a difference in the quality lol

I chose my photographer based on a past experience with him (he photographed my FI’s cousin’s wedding), as well as his portfolio. His pictures are more journalistic than posed, which is what we want. After talking to him on the phone, he seemed very friendly and is excited to meet us.

One that can tell a story and can implement your vision of what you want and he can give you some suggestions you may not have thought of.

I focus on the style/quality of photos, reviews and most importantly, if their personality as a photographer makes me feel comfortable. If I don’t feel comfortable, then it will show in photos.

I was searching for pictures that were naturally pretty and relied more on quality skill and natural lighting rather than using editing and putting in all different effects. I wanted my pictures to be timeless and not appear trendy when I show them to my children down the road. Also, the personality of the photographer since I knew I’d be spending all day with them.

If you don’t genuinely love their work, or get excited about the prospect of spending the day with them then keep looking. Photography is subjective, but I’d suggest looking for a good website with an up to date blog.

I am in this boat and am looking for a certain “style” of photographer. I can’t really explain the style, but I guess it’s kind of like photojournalism mixed with fashion? I don’t know lol. But when I see the style I like, I just know it. Huh. Good luck!

I looked for someone in my price range, who had my same philosophy on wedding photos (a few posed, but mostly just capturing people in the moment!). Once I had it narrowed down to 4 or so, I looked through their portfolios to see whose pictures seemed to be polished (good lighting and color) and well-edited, and whose subjects really shone through the photo. Some were so much about composition that the people themselves seemed secondary. The one I chose was the one whose portfolio I was halfway through before I realized some of these radiant people were, in fact, probably ordinary-looking in real life – she captured their happiness so well, they all looked beautiful.

Image Quality, Consistancy of work, Style, and Personality.

@Nurse_Bee: I think what you are looking for is a mix of “photojournalistic” and “editoral” style photography.

- Wedding: June 2014 - Ontario, Canada ♥ EDD- April 2016
We definitely wanted someone who produced pictures that we LOVED and got excited about. They had to have lots of experience and their work had to be consistent. The pictures had to look timeless (:
We got our dream photographer, and although we had to splurge on them, it will be totally worth it. I wanted them to do our wedding for a couple years now and I’m just so happy that we got them!
