I'm new at both, and trying to decide which class to sign up for in January.

    Any suggestions, bees?

    I'd like to tone up/lose 10 pounds

I prefer yoga myself...but I tend to think you get more results from Pilates :)

I haven't done much pilates, but from what I did it seemed more effective for losing weight/toning than yoga (unless you're doing fast yoga?) Yoga seems better for stretching/relaxing, in my very-novice opinion.

I wanted to pick both, but I picked pilates because I do it more.

I actually do hot yoga....and depending how hard you push yourself you can burn like 600 calories/hour.  But I don't go crazy...its more of a complete mind/body workout.

@Ms. Min Pin - I was actually just going to ask about hot yoga!

How do you like it? How often do you do it?

Do you find it gross how sweaty you get in the heat?

I like them both, but I think I prefer yoga.

I've also done hot yoga, although it's been a while since I went to class.  You do get REALLY sweaty.  It didn't bother me too much, but it was essentially like I jumped into a pool or something after class.  I do think the classes were really great though.  I used to feel really cleansed and great after class.

I dislike both of them!!! So much. I'd rather do a heart-ponding step class!

I love yoga, hate pilates. But if you're looking to tone up and lose weight I think pilates is the way to go. I think yoga helps you tone up over time but not over a short time period.

for toning, i'd go with pilates. both are similar to each other but there's more kinetic movement with pilates than yoga. you'd probably get faster results.

i do prefer pilates to yoga

I enjoy yoga more but find pilates more effective for toning.  Never tried hot yoga though.

I prefer pilates. Not sure why - maybe because you hold the poses for a shorter amount of time? Either way, I detest yoga. I've just never been very good at it.

Personally, i found pilates to be the most masochistic thing I have ever put my body through. That said, it did wonderful things for getting me fit, lean, and strong! I much prefer kick boxing to pilates though!

I really dont like bikram yoga, Its way too slow paced and I do not even feel it is a good workout. Plus I absolutely can not stand doing yoga in 100 degrees.  I think plates is great if you are using the reformer. I have been doing yoga for way longer than pilates and therefore prefer it. Power yoga is excellent for tonight and burning fat, it does amazing things for your body.

I looove pilates! It hurts at first, but only for the first week or so. And really, it's the good kind of "hurt" that means you are working your muscles! It's low impact plus great results.

I actually really like both, but for different reasons. I find yoga to be a great stretching/centering activity. I love doing it before bed becuase it puts me right to sleep! But if you are looking to tone up, do pilates. It really works your core (back and abs). One thing I never realized before Pilates was how having imbalanced strength in your back and abs can affect your posture and overall health. For example, my abs (while not a six pack by ANY means) were always stronger than my weak back. Pilates helps correct this to give you a strong core.

If there is an option in your area, I have actually taken "Yogalates", which was a combo yoga/pilates class. It's the best of both worlds! Yoga at the beginning, pilates in the middle, and then yoga at the end.

I like both for different reasons.  I think that pilates gives you more results, but yoga is a wonderful way to relax but still burn some calories and improve flexibility.  I don't know if it's just me but I can't take a morning yoga class because all I want to do after yoga is go to sleep!

*sorry if I repeated what other said I didn't read everyones responses.

Pilates...I find yoga boring =(. My mind drifts and I don't find it challenging. Pilates is hard for me--i have to concentrate more. Maybe i'm biased b/c of the classes i've taken. Pilates is harder, involves more repetition. Yoga was more like "breathe out and hold for 10 seconds......free your mind...." with Enya in the background. I've taken 3 different classes and the ONLY one i liked was the one on our honeymoon with the caribbean breeze blowing in

I want my work out to be a WORK OUT. Not put me to sleep. I prefer high intensity stuff with music pounding in my ears or something with a competitive factor

I think it's the DVDs I have, but I find yoga much more challenging and I'm always sore after. I read reviews of my DVDs before I buy them, but I still can't find a pilates DVD that makes my abs hurt like yoga does.

I think you are trying to lose weight or look slimmer, Pilates is the better choice. Yoga is good for stretching and relaxation but in my limited experience with it, it doesn't really change how your body looks.

I think its funny people are saying yoga is just relaxing and stretching and not a work out. Try a power yoga class I promise you its  not just relaxing. I think that is the number  one misconception about yoga. Its actually an excellent workout for muscle definition and toning.

Yeah, there are a million different styles of yoga, so it varies a lot depending on your teacher.  Pilates you kind of know what you are getting into before you go to a class.  Yoga you really have to find the style you want.

If you do want yoga for toning or cardio, look for classes with "power," "vinyasa," or "ashtanga" in their names.  Iyengar classes can also do some good toning (not cardio) if the teacher really knows their stuff.  Same with Anusara classes.

I love yoga.  I'd recommend finding a studio and taking a class or two to see which you prefer.  For me, my yoga teacher has made all the difference. I would never consider not taking a class with Joe as long as it's an option!

It's more of a personal taste. Although, I can say that I have been in pilates and I have seen fast results. Within the first two weeks I can see my body changing. More long lean muscles, more flexibility. Even though it was really hard at first, I learned to love and I am on my way to being a certified instructor.

I think yoga is best for overall health. I do incorporate a couple of pilates moves into my workout, however, because it helps with hip strength.
