Dear Person,
Thank you so much for your generous gift. We have so many exciting things planned for our new life together, and your thoughfulness will help start us off in the right direction. It was so wonderful to see you at the wedding and we hope you enjoyed the night as much as we did!
Thank you,
Us
I was just about to post what @jocelyn3476 said. When I get a check at Christmas I refer to their thoughtfulness or generosity and possibly how I will spend the money.<span style="font-family: tahoma, verdana; font-size: 13px; font-style: italic;">
We wrote something similar to what Joceylyn3476 suggested: "Thank you for the generous gift". I didn't get too much more specific than that, but I think that was enough. :)
Agreed with "generous gift." It adds a personal touch if you have something specific planned for it (down payment on your first house, etc).
Good for you for getting a head start on thank yous!
You could say what you intend to do with it.
"thank you for your generous gift! We will use it someday to make a downpayment on our first home."
"Thank you for your generous gift! We plan to use it to purchase some furniture for our dining room. We look forward to hosting you someday."
We wrote that we would use the money for a honeymoon or things for our new place because we were moving. Just don't mention an amount of money that they gave you.
We used something very close to Jocelyn's example. I wish I would have had that when I was in the midst of writing my thank you's!
If we got a check or cash, I just wrote "thank you so much for your generous gift, we put it toward our honeymoon in the Dominican Republic" (or whatever we used it for. That way they know what it got used for and that you didnt just buy groceries with it. And we also got to share where we were honeymooning :)

I decided that with a couple days until the honeymoon ... I'd do some thank you notes. I have one card for each person I invited to the wedding and there were lots of people who gave a card + check or cash.
I don't know what to say. I know that if I got a vase, I'd mention that I love it and have displayed in the living room - what do you say if the gift was money though?
Thank you.
