What do you think of Belly Cakes, like the ones below, for a baby shower? Love them? Hate them? Think they are amazing? Think they are weird?
I don't hate them.. but I definitely don't like them either.
I guess if momma likes it that's all that matters. =)
Honestly they kinda freak me out. It's like "Hey let's take a knife to the belly and eat the insides, YAY!"
To be honest, I would be completely freaked out by this. I wouldn't want to eat it. lol
The idea of carving into a torso cake is pretty weird to me and my mind would immediately go to emergency c-sections. It's just a little too literal for my taste.
Maybe I'm weird, but I think they're cute!

I think they are kinda cute in theory... I mean, who doesn't like a cute baby bump? But then when I think about cutting into it and eating it, it creeps me out and just is NOT appetizing to me!

Don't hate it, don't love it. Wouldn't particularly want one at my shower.
Not a fan. I would not be able to cut into a belly cake like a mature human being...I would crack jokes about C-Sections and pretend to find limbs in the cake!
The ones you postes are kind of cute, still a little weird to cut into a body... but if you have ever looked at cake wrecks, belly cakes have a tendency to turn out AWFULLY creepy.

I like the belly cakes they are cute. They are cute novelty cakes. 2 friends of mine have bdays in the same week and some one made them a bra cake. I thought it was hilarious!
hahahhahaha. I had actually never seen a belly cake before. It is so cute. Thankfully the belly has clothes on, you don't see strech mark, or a popped out belly button.
I am a nurse, and find that my humour can be gross and morbid sometimes. saying that, the picture with the placenta is priceless!!!
I think they are weird and creepy. And I agree with Minutiae; I wouldn't be able to cut into it like a mature adult.
That said, I would totally laugh if this showed up at my shower:
I think they're really weird. I've seen ones where they make little foot prints against the 'belly' like there's something in it. Totally creepy in my opinion.
I love doing them. It's actually our trade mark. I have done like 5 of them and we add a little foot on them, it's our little trade mark. Everyone loves them (well the moms to be)
@bree72: HAHAHA! OMG, I just burst out laughing at my desk and my boss came over to see what I was laughing at. His response when he saw the cake picture was, "Oh, my... Is that, like... a normal cake to have at a baby shower?"
Um, no.
Some of these cakes are rediculously odd!! And yet hilariously funny. I think I would give birth there and then if someone presented me with a cake like Bree found!!!
But on the belly cakes - I've got to say no - I wouldn't want to cut into that. Yes it looks cute, and totally embraces the whole beautiful concept of pregnancy... but as a cake I just dont think it works.
I must be weird too because I LOVE them.
I had two at my baby shower, my FI's aunt brought one because she baked two "baby" toys into the belly.. one was a boy and one was a girl. So before we ate it I pulled one out with the strings at the top and whatever one I pulled thats the gender my baby was going to be.. I pulled a boy... I had a girl. :) It was still pretty cool though!
For my friends shower I bought a cake that looked kinda like this:

I'm personally not a fan of them. They kind of weird me out. And like some PPs said, there's no way I'd be able to be a mature adult about them.

I guess I am in the minority. I think they are cute. I look at them as just a cake in the end. I would eat it and enjoy that belly! lol.

Please tell me these are not red velvet cakes... (having a flashback to steel magnolias and the armadillo cake)
I think they are actually really cute! Cake is cake.. I will eat whatever.. it is like eating a heart shaped valentines cake on V-Day... I mean, you don't think you're really eating a heart, right ( I know it is not anatomically the same!)
oy, they are creepy to me. it's kind of like when people get cakes made specifically to look like their pets. do they realize they'll have to cut into it? my suggestion is to just not get it in red velvet flavor or like...filled with strawberry jam or something. ICK!
however, SO mentions that they're perfect if you're going the C-section route. XD
I wouldn't say I HATE them, but I think they are a bit strange... and I wouldn't want one personally... But if I went to a shower and saw one I wouldn't really think much about it either way, to each their own.
