I think the hair and makeup prices seem reasonable but the travel fee seems a little high…is she very far?

Travel rate does seem a bit high. 50 miles is not that far even if you just paid for her gas. I chose someone who is  finishing beauty school to do hair and she is bringing a colleague to do makeup. I’ve had one free hair trial so far and I think we’re only paying around 80 for hair and makeup combined (obviously without tip)

I think it’s very reasonable.

My stepdaughter recently was married in the Philadelphia area last fall, and, because I do not live there, I called two salons that one of her friends had recommeded to ask for some pricing information and to book an appointment for an up-do for the day of the wedding.  I would say that the prices you are being quoted for the Philadelphia metro area seem to be fairly consistent with what I found.

Regarding the travel fee, if the 50 miles represents a round trip, depending on traffic, this would include approximately an hour of the vendor’s time just to make the trip, plus the time involved in packing up her supplies and equipment so that she is able to come to you (vs. you going to her at a salon), plus gas and wear-and-tear on her vehicle. This doesn’t sound too outrageous when you take those factors into consideration.

ETA: Oops! I just noticed that you live in the Philadelphia area but your wedding is in VT.

@FutureMrsWeston:  One of my very best friends is a professional hair and make-up artist, and I have learned a lot from him over the years. He and and another stylist in his salon always used to complement me on how I did my make up. However, I still chose to pay him to do my hair and make up for my engagement portrait, my wedding, and my formal bridal portrait, because there just is no way  that I could have done the same calibre of work as he can.

I obviously do not know your mother.  However, I am going to guess that what she’s really objecting to an overly made-up look  that she dislikes that may have seen some other make-up artists do.  Perhaps you can tell her that you’re going for an entirely different look than the one your sister had for her proms or some other people have had that your mom may not have liked.

Yes, if the mileage is 50 in each direction, I think the fee is even more justifiable.
