What do you think of the name Grafton for a baby boy? We want something uncommon but not weird, and we like names that start with G. We thought of Grafton over the weekend but want some outside opinions.
It's different but unique. And it makes me think of a scholar or a literary writer.
@kitzy: That's exactly what I thought of.
Maybe Griffin? That has a similar feel and I think is still fairly unusual.
Yeah... makes me think of:
Skin graft, graph paper, someone who weighs a 'ton'.
A cute boys name that I have mentioned on another post: Gatlin... Like "Cat" with a "G" and then "Lin" but if you love Grafton, go with it.
I don't know why, but I instantly thought giraffe. I voted no
im not a fan.... but here are a few other g names :) gage, gavin, garner, garrett, grant, grayson
i voted no. i also thought of skin graft when i saw it.
My younger brother's name is Gage. He's the only one i know. I like Graham too! I don't know anyone with that name.
I like it! It actually sounds like an older name, like from the 1900s or something. It didn't come up in the top 1000 on Baby Name Voyager, so it's definitely unique. Watch, you'll name your baby Grafton and 10 years later it will be insanely popular. :-)
@kitzy: I also love the name Griffin, I have only met one and he was Australian and just an awesome guy.
Grafton is a small town, 10 minutes away from St. Louis on the Mississippi River that my fiance and I often go to --- it is famous for bed and breakfasts!! I kind of like it because I have a positive correlation with it!
it makes me think of grafton cheddar cheese....i'd think it was cute if i didn't associate it with cheese though?
@klb2748: Haha, I've been there, too (most of my dad's side of the family still stay in Alton, IL), and that's what I instantly thought of!
Unfortunately I have no other suggestions at this point! I really like the name Gage though! I didn't even think of skin graft when first saw the name, but something about it just doesn't roll off the tongue as I'd like it to!
I also think of skin graph.
I like Griffin and Graham. Those are both traditional, yet not common names. Grafton just sounds like one of those made up names that are all the rage right now.
I like the Griffin suggestion, but spelled Gryphon :)
Please don't.
@lezlers: yeah I know! That poor kid would be teasted mercilessly.
Griffon is OK, but I would definitely keep looking.
Grafton = Skin Graft for sure (just because it's the name of a place, doesn't necessarily mean it would make a good first name for a person).
Edited to add - it's not a made-up name, it's a very old English name that was last in the "top 1000" baby names in 1895 :)
@lezlers: I'm all for changing up the spelling of a name by one letter or something but Gryphon reminded me of the word "siphon" for some reason. I think people would struggle with whether the "y" is long or short.
@Gerbera: Isn't there a Sue Grafton or something? Haha but she writes trashy mystery novels, I think....
@bride123: Yes, she writes those A is for Alibi, B is for... well I forget what B is for. I used to love those when I was younger. I still think Kinsey Millhone is a pretty awesome detective name.
I instantly thought of Gryffindor when the poster put Griffin. No Harry Potter names for me.
I like Graham or Gabe or Gavin.
I also think immeadiately of skin grafts - I vote no!
I do really like the name Griffon (but spelled normally - I HATE goofy misspellings). I'd say it fits your criteria too - uncommon, not weird, and starts with a G.
This site has a ton of boy's G names, the majority of which I would say are uncommon (some of them are definitely weird though - avoid those): http://www.thinkbabynames.com/list/1/G
I vote no as well - sorry!
Our friends are naming their soon to be born boy Garrin. It's different - I kinda like it! I also like Griffin. It makes me think of Neve Campbell's boyfriend on Party of Five!
I vote no too, mainly because it makes me think of skin grafts like everyone else, but also because it sounds kind of contrived.
What about Gibson, Gerard, Gideon, Grady or Gus? (I got all of these from the site I posted above).
I like it! I think it's distinctive. Little kids won't know what skin grafts are for a good while, so you wouldn't have to worry about teasing right away.
If you and your husband like the name Grafton, go for it.
I like it! Like you said, it's uncommon without being weird. It actually reminds me of this restaurant in Harvard Square--Grafton Street!
