They have been feature in the knot magazine and received several awards.  The info they gave me said the galleries on their website have not been retouched.

They are nice, but it depends on the style you want. Its a very posed style which is what you want, great!

I would say it really depends on what they are charging. If they are top dollar, no. If they are reasonably priced. Then great!

Im not impressed. Their lighting skills are lacking.. there are a lot of "blown out" whites and very little shadow detail. Honestly, I believe them that the "galleries on their website have not been retouched" and it shows....

Yeah, I have to say that I was really underwhelmed by their pictures.  I don't think it's because they aren't retouched yet, either.  Great photography is great before and after.  Also, these are what they consider their best photos.  Don't be impressed by their supposed awards, you should be impressed by their work, and I'm certainly not!  You can definitely find better, regardless of how little they charge.

There coloration isnt my favorite and I dont feel like they really "capture the moment of the day"  They are fairly good portrait photographers though.  The most important thing is that you look at the pictures and think those are exactly how I want mine to look.

For me I wanted a photodocumentary style.  Where they capture that look on FHs face when i walk down the isle or my grandma giving me a big hug.  The details like that are what are important to me.

It really all depends on what your photography budget is.

I also think it is a good thing to have some photos retouched.  Do they not do that at all?  Sometimes there was too much light or a picture needs to be darkened.  Sometimes, touch ups are things that could have been done with the camera in the moment but a setting was a little off so they get a chance to fix it in post.

But if you look at those pictures and love them then I say book them.  That is what is important.

thanks for the thoughts ladies. Frankly, I have a hard time telling... I would like to stay under $1500 for engagement and wedding - which doesn't give me options for the best ya know?  I'm trying to find the best in my budget range

I agree witht he other ladies. I am not really impressed with the photos. The PP says they are very posed and generic IMO. And there are a few pictures are not even centered correctly (ie groomsmen is partially cut out, ailse of church is not framed correctly.) You can find better.

Our photographer is charging us $900 and she's amazing.  And that's in Southern California (everything is stupidly expensive out here!)

    http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/engagement-photos-33

    www.irishgrzanich.com

Check out recent graduates of any photography schools near by.  Often they are amazing but don't feel like they can charge an arm and a leg yet.  Newer photographers don't mean they are less talented.  That's the case with ours.  She graduated from Brooks Institute of Photography in '08 and has been buliding up her business.  She's blown up since then! And they will only get better in the year until your wedding.  Also, negotiate!! People are often willing to help out if asked.

A lot of them look super-dark or have weird lighting in general. I'm looking at the first gallery, and that one shot of the bride holding the bouquet...yikes! There's a weird white blob in the middle of her chest.

@tinaspoon: Those aren't really great, either. I mean, they're okay shots, but nothing really stands out about them. The ones I've looked at look like something a guest could take if they had a nice camera.

Can I add, that I think we (the bee) compare to all photos we see which means that at a certain price range she may be great. She certainly isnt bad. Not everyone can afford the best photographer.

@Mrs Grape: I agree, not impressed with the second one either.

The lighting is so wierd for some reason in all his pics, and they are not well focused.  Any guest could snap a few good shots just like this.  There is no magic in any of the pics.

Meant to comment on the first options totally amateur website design too...that in itself would turn me off.  Basic, run of the mill, no pride or talent on display.  If I was googling them I'd jump on by based on website alone.

Where are you trying to locate a photographer?  ANd are you trying to go budget on the pics or just find a good photographer...cause mine travels lol!  Actually, many photographers do, and don't charge more than accomodation and flight/fuel.

@Take The Reins: your photographer states on their website that their packages start at $3000.  I would like to stay around $1500 as I previously said. If I had $3000 for photography I would for sure go for someone super amazing also.

    @lefeymw: I agree.

I think that's why you might want to broaden your search to some photography schools.  They will be SO much cheaper and just as talented.  Just make sure that they've done a couple of weddings before.

Also, I just googled for a photographer in pittsburgh and found this guy.  He's $1500.  I only looked a a few photos but so far he seems better than the others.

@lefeymw: I can definitely understand being on a budget, but I feel like the OP would be paying way too much (at $1500) for the quality of photos on those two sites.

From a photog pov: This person does not know how to use a flash, which I would be especially scared of if your wedding is inside. Most photos with flash are overexposed, and most without are really dark. The poses are very generic and unimaginative. If you can find someone else, do so.

@tinaspoon: Sorry, missed that post above...I wasn't trying to be rude.  Rereading I realize it came a cross sounding harsh and spoiled...my apologies, I didn;t intend it that way.

Are you willing to share where you will need the photographer?  Maybe someone in the area can put you on to someone?

FYI, ours is not actually that expensive for our area...I contacted a couple others who were much more, and you didn't get a disk.  We didn't intend on paying as much as we are either, but we sacrificed in other areas because the pics mean a lot to us, and I love our photographers work.

@eimajleigh: Oh yeah!  Very nice find.  His depth of colour is much better, clarity, everything.  He obviously knows how to shoot in different lighting, alter exposure use relectors and such also.  Makes a big difference to the overall quality.

What awards?  The knot awards and magazine are given to anyone who commits to a certain advertising amount.  Kind of bogus I know.....

They claim to be in business for 15 yrs, either their port pics are very outdated or well I don't know, but the website design, and portfolio pictures look like a newcomer to the business to me.

Also, not all of us here are ladies!

@USER876: I totally agree about the awards. And I'm totally guilty of the "ladies" thing! I always assume its just women and then I catch myself and say "bees" so it's more inclusive!

@tinaspoon: Yeah, I'm underwhelmed by both photographers.  The second is a little better than the first - unfortunately, I think competence of website design helps get customers quite a bit. But again, like people have said, it depends on what you're looking for.  It's hard to find an affordable photographer these days!

@tinaspoon: I'm not crazy about either of the 2 you posted (sorry). I did look a bit and found one photographer in the Pittsbugh area that's close to your budget.

    http://www.caitlintphotography.com/

You could try expanding your search to Ohio or the Erie, Pa areas. Sometimes the travel expenses for the photographer aren't too bad.

@tinaspoon: I also, am not very impressed with those photographers. My budget was $1500 as well and what I did was contact my top rated photographer for pricing info, the one I liked best was actually the one most willing to accomodate to my budget so we got an awesome deal wedding for $1500 and engagement session for $250 when her normal price is $2600. We just got our engagement pics back and she's worth every penny of $2600 and I wish we had the budget to pay her that but we dont. Anyway long story short, some photographers are flexible and it doesn't hurt to ask.

The OP's budget is $1500 and she's trying really hard to find quality photography in that price range. I've been looking at photographers for a while and everything is $3k+ for that artistic, quality photography that the pp's have in mind.

OP, what if you find a more experience (and more expensive) photographer but cut down the package to fit within your price range?

I mean, it's about quality, not quantity, right? In the end, you only need a few excellent shots to frame or put in your album. No one needs 2,000 photos.

Good luck, it'll all work out! I'm sure you'll find someone great who fits in your budget!

Not a fan. His shots are awkward and either too up close or too far away. Id pass.

No! They aren't good, IMO. A lot of the photos are blurry. Their website is terrible. The website tells a lot about the photog. The photos are subpar with bad lighting. Plus, most photogs only put their BEST photos from each event on their website. This means there are probably a LOT more terrible photos they aren't featuring. This was one of the best pieces of advice I got photog shopping: ask to see whole albums. That way you know how many shots in an event are actually frame worthy. Overall, I'd say don't go with them.

I'm gonna jump in here and say I really don't see too much wrong with them.  They're not the super artsy, editorial kind that we are all used to seeing nowadays, but not everyone is into that.  They are sure a whole ton better than I or anyone I know could take!

I prefer the first ones out of the two.  I totally understand where you're coming from with a limited budget.  I feel like we shouldn't be comparing apples to oranges.  I mean obviously I would also like a $10,000 e-ring but that's not possible.  Many people would probably prefer the $10,000 one, but that doesn't mean I can't be happy with what I can afford.  Sorry, ranting a bit!

Anyways, I hope you can make a decision that you're happy with.

I just kinda did a really rough google search and came up with a few options.

This company does coverage starting at $1250 (apprentice is $900) but doesn't include an album - but you could easily put that together yourself.

dnb is the best of those that have been posted thus far. I bet YosPhoto and the others posted are *starting* at $1250 and that will be out of her budget if she wants an engagement session AND more than like 3 hours of wedding coverage. Caitlin Thomas is an excellent choice, but at $1700 for base coverage (and what about e-session, etc?), the OP will be way over her budget.

Of the choices thus far in her budget, DNB is probably the best bet.

OP, I see in a previous post that you are budgeting about $700 for a limo. I think you should scrap it or use YDD in Pittsburgh for a $300 savings to bump you up a bit; it will open up a lot more options in my opinion.
