i usually start with cereal and fruit with black coffee

then i choose a snack like yogurt, a granola bar, or fruit in the midmorning

lunch is usually a sandwich (usually tuna, egg, or pbj)with carrot sticks and fruit or yogurt, and a lot of water

in the afternoon, i have pretzels or another snack like the morning or instant oatmeal

dinner is usually a balanced meal, but i sometimes totally eat junk food here (i’m trying to et better; at one point, i ate pizza for dinner like three times a week, and like you i LOVE hamburgers!).

i love dessert!  i try to steer toward popsicles or froyo

and at night, i eat popcorn or raw veggies with hummus (yum!)

I think one problem you have is not eating breakfast.  I know a lot of people say that it makes them sick but eating at least something in the morning is the best thing.  It is so important, people who eat breakfast weigh less and eat less during the day.

I eat a greek yogurt in the morning (7:00am), sometimes a granola bar before lunch.  At lunch, I have a Marie Callendar’s pasta meal with apple sauce (11:00am).  Sometimes I have a snack after lunch but not often.  I eat a smaller dinner with meal and vegetables (5:00 or 6:00pm).  Then I usually have some fruit and a 100-calorie popcorn if I’m still hungry.  I try to drink fluids through out the entire day to stay hydrated.

I’m allowed to eat at my desk at work, so that helps me eat regular meals at a regular time.

I normally eat:

-Chobani Greek yougurt, two boiled eggs

-wasa crackers with light baby bell spreadable cheese

-homemade lomein or soup or something else light for lunch

-1/2 tuna sandwich and grapes

-fish or chicken with frozen brocolli or another veg

Breakfast: 9 am- Instant Oatmeal w/ water or Special K w/ skim millk.  Large coffee w/ skim milk

Mid morning snack 11 am: Fruit (usually an apple or orange ) OR non-fat yogurt

Lunch 1 pm: Whole wheat bread sandwhich w/ a couple of slices of lean turkey cold cut w/ mustard or light mayo.  Sometimes I’ll side it with carrots & hummus or maybe a handfull of wheat thin crackers

All Day Drink: water and sometimes I treat myself to diet coke

Afternoon snack (4 pm): Fruit or Yogurt (depending on what my morning snack was) or a handful of almonds, or sometimes i’ll have one of those 100 calorie snacks + coffee w/ skim milk

Dinner (7 pm): Grilled/roasted chicken or grilled./roasted fish w/ brown rice (or whole wheat pasta or a sweet potato) with a side of a veggie (usually spinach, asparagus or a salad w/ a light dressing)

Dessert ( around 8pm): Only a couple of times a week I’ll treat my self to a Skinny Cow ice cream, these are usually under 100 cals or a Fudgesicle stick that’s around 60 cals

I eat breakfast when I wake up, usually I have plain Greek yogurt with about 1/4 cup of grains (like grape nuts, or whatever) and some dried cranberries or a little maple syrup or honey mixed in. I have two cups of coffee (I like it black).

Morning snack is usually a handful of almonds or a piece of fruit.

Lunch is often a sandwich, whole grain bread with humus and veggies, or maybe turkey, mayo and veggies. I usually have some chips on the side because a sandwich just doesn’t feel right without them! I drink either water, seltzer, or iced/hot tea all day.

In the afternoon sometimes I have another snack, like crackers and cheese or a piece of fruit. Maybe chips and salsa sometimes.

Dinner is different each night. My partner and I both really enjoy cooking and eating out. If we eat in, its usually vegetarian, although we probably have either fish or chicken once a week. We rarely cook red meat. I usually make black bean tacos (beans, diced tomatoes, corn, and lots of spices) one night, and we’ll usually have whole grain pasta w/ spinach and tomato sauce one night. I eat dessert after dinner each night: ice cream, cookies, whatever we have that week.

We eat out about once a week, which I love but its the reason I can’t lose weight. When we go out we’ll usually split an appetizer, each have an entree, and then eat dessert. Plus, I’ll have a cocktail and a glass of wine or a couple beers.

I started eating healthier by planning my meals each week, and grocery shopping once a week. If its a busy week, we have things like frozen veggie burgers and frozen salmon burgers on hand. The pasta thing is really easy too: we just throw penne pasta in the water, and then at the last minute through in a bunch of baby spinach, and have it with a tomato (not cream) sauce. In the summer we plan to have a salad for dinner one night a week, but its a fancy salad (this week it had green beans and potatoes on it with a walnut dressing). I read the blog smittenkitchen for good recipe ideas, and check martha stewart out too.

Eating breakfast really helps me too, and I’ve read its the best thing you can do if you’re trying to lose weight. You could hardboil some eggs at the beginning of the week and have one with a piece of toast if you’re in a hurry. Have easy fruits like bananas and stuff on hand.

I totally just wrote a novel! I’m sorry if you weren’t looking for advice, I just love food, and learning to really appreciate and love the food I ate helped me become much healthier.

I eat frequently, usually about 5 meals a day (my co-workers call me a hobbit), but it’s usually healthy stuff.

Try making small changes. Switch Coke for tea, or if you need the sweet, try something like Izze soda . Take your lunch instead of eating fast food (you can cook casseroles, beirox, etc, on the weekends and freeze them into individual portions). Package up healthy snacks of fruit, veggies, cheese, etc. and keep them on-hand.

I’ve found since it’s stopped eating a lot of sweets and junk food, I don’t even want it anymore. My fiance jokingly tells me I’ve “broken” him because he can’t even eat a whole candy bar anymore because it’s too much sugar. So be confident that if you make lifestyle changes they can and do work!

@JennyChicago: congrats on making those changes! even when I sleep in late (i’m on a bit of a long vacation from grad school right now) I’ll try to eat a banana when I get up around 10:00 and that holds me over till a more appropriate lunch time. Going to bed earlier is good too, because then I’m not up getting late night cravings for popcorn. Scheduling dinners for the week really helped me. And I know it seems strange, but I started reading food blogs and got really interested in growing my own food, cooking food, food in general and now I think I eat better because I value it more.

I know what you mean!  My schedule was so off when I wasn’t working!  Sounds like you are making good steps by not eating out and drinking water instead of soda.

I see your post that you’ve been unemployeed for a year and a half. When I was unemployeed for a year, that’s when I learned to cook! I didn’t really have much to do, and couldn’t afford to do anything anyway, so I started cooking!

I really think that frequent smaller healthy meals is the way to go!

I changed my eating habits DRASTICALLY after watching that documentary “SUPERSIZE ME” about MC’d’s–Me and my fi would eat Wendy’s a few nights a week as a midnight snack (think chicken nuggets + honey mustard sauce + bacon cheeseburgers + frosty’s) lol we were REAL Slobs!!! Then again we were in college at the time so we had the freedom of our own schedules so staying up till Midnight to eat was NO problem!   Anyway, we both have not had ANY fast food in almost 4 years!!!  That was a HUGE change, but it was worth it.  We both lost weight and are at normal weights and have good BMI’s (body mass indexes)

Now working in an office all day I prefer to bring my own food (cheaper!!).  I plan my meals and actually look forward to going grocery shopping so I can find different healthy snacks!  I get bored really easily so I try to switch it up a lot.  Just pay attention to portions and actually look at the nutritional information.  A lot of times you the actual serving size (what you should really be eating) is only 1/2 or 1/4 of that bar/box/bag etc of whatever you are eating–so read those labels!

My schedule varies on my level of morning laziness.

‘Breakfast’ (6.30 am): Earl Grey w/ cream & honey accompanied by a whole wheat & fruit muffin (homemade, yum)

2nd breakfast/snack (9-10.30am): 1 whole wheat toast (usually w/ peanut butter) & a fruit.

Lunch (12-1.30pm): Usually I have either a salad or a wrap (which is baasically a salad), or if I don’t have a huge appetite hummus w/ cracker or yogurt w/ fruit.

Supper is @6pm and we try and have something different every night 🙂

I like to snack on nuts & dried fruit (mmmm cranberries and pineapple) in the evening, though I try not to eat anything after 10pm (unless I am absolutely starving, then that is another story).

I have been trying to drink more water & once I get my blender back will be making delicious fruit smoothies once again!

Dinner- whatever I make for the family minus the bread/pasta and double the veggies

Snacks- fruit, low-fat string cheese, raw veggies and dip, yogurt
