FI loves dramas, especially historical-type ones. They put me to sleep. I love love love love horror movies. I can't get enough of them. We both agree on comedies though. We also watch a lot of TV shows on DVD.
We more or less alternate back and forth but we definitely end up with more horror movies. We also don't have cable though so I end up watching some of them on my own when I have free time.
FI and I typically don't have the same taste in movies. I love older movies like Audrey Hepburn movies and I love love love Alfred Hitchcock movies. FI likes historical dramas, which I totally fall asleep to. We both enjoy comedies, though so sometimes we will agree on something to watch. We usually just end up watching TV shows on DVD like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia or How I Met Your Mother. It's better that way because I tend to get bored easily when I watch a movie even if it's really short.
Yeah, I agree with hotchildinthecity. If we can't agree on a movie, we can always find a comedy that we both want to see. Nothin' wrong with some silly humor!
Like, the other night, we rented Role Models. Yeah, I wouldn't normally admit that to people, but it was funny and entertaining, and we both liked watching it.
We like getting TV shows on DVD. Right now, we're obsessed with The Big Bang Theory. SO funny!
He's a Bond fan, and I'm a Steel Magnolias-type of movie girl, so picking out a movie together can be difficult...I don't hate Bond but there's only so many skiing chase scenes I can take, you know?
Like other posters, we can usually find a comedy that we both want to watch, or a tv show. Right now we're getting caught up with Mad Men and have also started watching Quantum Leap, of all things. I think QL is more for me than him, but he remembers it from growing up so he'll watch it with me. :)
We usually compromise on a goofball comedy as well. Plus we'll watch TV on DVD, too -- right now we're into Lost.
I usually watch documentaries and chick flix when he's not around. If you take advantage of streaming Netflix, you can watch all you want! I love it.
We tend to have really similar taste in movies, except for horror flicks which he loves and I can't stand. So horror movies he either watches alone or on guy movie night (which I am not required to attend and usually takes place elsewhere anyway). For our movie night we watch comedies, dramas, oldies, action, anything we happen to feel like that particular week. This week we are watching "Back to School" which he has never seen and I haven't seen in years. I adore Netflix. SO much cheaper than going to the local movie place.
@MaryAlice: FI and I LOVE documentaries! That's another thing we watch together.
We make sure to watch at least one movie per weekend that just looks flat out awful, or "looks good" on paper but got horrible reviews.
Occasionally there's a "popular" movie that got good reviews, but they never seem to be that great. Our compromise there is if we watch "popular" movie for BF, we can watch "ridiculously awful-looking" movie for me.
We watch alot of things like the Bond movies, the Dirty Harry series, 2001, whatever... I don't make him watch chick flicks that often because I'm NICE like that.

My husband and I recently opened a Netflix account and really enjoy snuggling up on the couch together with a good movie and a bowl of popcorn (old bay on mine, please!) The difficulty has been finding movies to enjoy together. He's a shoot em' up movie kind of guy... the more action, the better! I'm a chick-flick or sappy drama kind of girl. Sometimes we rotate back and forth (one movie I enjoy, next time a movie he enjoys) and sometimes we find a movie where we can meet in the middle. Do you and your significant other enjoy the same movies? If not, how do you resolve it? Do you have any good "meet in the middle" recommendations?
