Hello bees :) I'm starting a new job on Monday and it got me thinking (and panicking a bit!)...what do all you bees wear to work?
My new office is business casual...but what does that really mean anymore? I want to look professional but I also want to look fashionable.
So, I thought I'd go to my fellow bees and see what you ladies like to wear to work... What's your favorite outfit?
My old office was business casual/formal. I usually wore dress pants and a nice top.
Business casual in my company is dress pants/skirt/dress with a nice top.
I work at a bank, so we have to wear business casual. No jeans or tennis shoes or anything like that. today I am wearing a pair of black slacks, a black lace cami and a tan knit cardigan. I always wear either black, grey, or brown slacks and a nice, cute top. I have flats on today, but sometimes i will wear my high heels.
I wear skirts with knee high soccar socks, sneakers, anything with a liquor emblem... but I work at a bar ;)
ha ha...Miss Pizzelle - you crack me up!
What are our thoughts on open-toed/peep toe heels that are otherwise pretty conservative? Now that it's spring I really want to sport some open toe heels with my dress pants and skirts...but is it appropriate?
I have a pair of peep toe heels i wear to work, but we "get" to during the summer.
Open toe sandals are appropriate at my job. Heck some actually wear sandals as long as they are not flip-flops. These are great questions to ask your new boss. I know I am allowed to wear Capri/flood style dress pants but I was with a company once that only allowed woman to wear those style pants if you wore a jacket with them.
Our entire office is pretty casual (some departments can wear jeans everyday), but our specific department must dress more formally. I wear either skirts and nice tops with sweaters, dresses with cardigans, or black dress pants with button-down shirts, and a sweater if necessary. Black flats or black pumps.
Fridays we can wear jeans (must be nice jeans, no rips, etc), and still need to wear formal work type tops.
Most of my work clothes come from Banana Republic or Ann Taylor.
Our office is totally laid back, I can wear jeans any day I want, or flip flops... so I won't bore you with the details on what I wear to work...
My definition of business casual would be slacks and sweaters/blouses or skirts and sweaters/ blouses or dresses. NO strapless, no flip flops, no tank tops, no SHORT skirts, no tees.
I would say that open toed shoes are perfectly fine.
I agree that you should talk to your boss about what is appropriate. I would dress more on the conservative side on Monday to be careful and then discuss it with her/him. Also, you can get clues from what your office mates are wearing.
We're business casual so slacks or skirt with a nice top. For guys, they get to wear short sleeve polos with slacks!!
my office likes to say they are business casual but they are casual casual. i always wear jeans or a casual dress. flip flops, tank tops, whatever are fine too. my boss has come in wearing yoga pants or sweats on numerous occasions...i work for a mental health association, but all of our client contact is phone or email :) i don't know why they call it business casual though...
I have to wear all black... black dress pants, black cami and a silly blazer jacket thing, I guess they think is stylish!! Im a hostess at a restaurant part time!
When I first started my job I was wearing dress pants and button downs/nice cardigans every day. After about a year of that I checked in my handbook and there was no actual business wear guidelines, other than being clean and looking appropriate for your position.
Since I have zero client interaction and basically work by myself, I wear a lot of corduroys from gap/j.crew, nice jeans sometimes with dressier tops, and cute blazers. I only wear dress pants if I have no clean clothes :) Be conservative at first and you can figure out what the dress code is really eventually.
I also wear peep toes a lot. I think that's a very conservative business if that's a no-no.
I'd do go with dress pants and a nice top/blouse for the first day or two and see what others are wearing. In my office there's a pretty big range. Today I'm in a dress, but tomorrow it could be jeans and a nice t-shirt with funky sneakers.
I just wear dress pants and a nice shirt. I have a few pair of shoes in my filing cabinet too, otherwise I just rock sneaks lol. I don't like to wear my uncomfy shoes unless we have a meeting or some kind of event. Otherwise I'm behind a desk for most of my day. But we have to go to court a lot so I also have a suit, just in case.
I wish my office dressed up more (not that it really calls for it, though.) I dress up about twice a week, but I'm the only one who does. Most of the time I just wear jeans and a nice blouse. The other women tend to wear jeans and a polo or t-shirt. They're always like "what are you all dressed up for?" and it makes me feel bad, but I still think they should be a little more dressed up. Half of the time it looks like they're on vacation.
For your first day, though, I would probably wear dress pants or a skirt and a nice blouse, at least. You don't want to look under dressed!
We can wear jeans, flip flops and tshirts unless someone important comes in, and then we have to act like we're business casual all the time. Lately I've been wearing sundresses with cardigans. The only things we can't wear are sleeveless shirts and shorts.
My job varies. There are days when wearing jeans and a sweatshirt is fine because I'm working in our storage units. Other days I'm at home in pj's all day. On days when I visit schools or give presentations it's slack, nice blouse, cute shoes. I get a lot of my stuff from Ross and Dress Barn.
My office is uber-casual. Jeans, flip-flops, t-shirts, shorts. I wear jeans almost every day. In the winter, I wear boots, and in the summer, I wear flat sandals or ballet flats.
I used to work in an office that was business casual and I usually wore simple dresses, just because I'm not comfortable in dress pants. I wore sandals as long as they weren't TOO strappy. But open toe was fine.
My office is business casual and my work attire consists of Ann Taylor, Black House White Market, and Express. I usually wear a pair of dress pants or a skirt with a nice top. In the winter I usually wear a pair of dress pants with a nice sweater and in the summer I go for more skirts and sandals with cute tops.
My office is pretty casual. The only requirement is that we can't wear sweats, gymwear, tank tops (casual ones, silk shells and stuff are okay), etc. Basically, anything you would wear clubbing is out, and t-shirts are out, too.
But we can wear jeans, sneakers, and women can wear opentoed shoes that aren't flip flops.
Expectations depend on what field you work in. Accounting and Finance and other more corporate environments have stricter definitions of "business casual." I work in one of these stricter environments, so I wear suit pants or pencil skirts with button-down blouses, cardigan sets, or light sweaters. For big meetings, I suit up!
In an office environment, you will be taken more seriously if you don't wear your hair up in a ponytail (low ponytail with a nice clip or a bun is ok) and high heels. Just something I've noticed.
Ceil blue scrubs with a white t-shirt underneath. Glamorous, right?
I agree with what most of the other bees are saying - check with your boss or company guidelines.
I work for a pretty conservative bank and we're allowed to wear peep toes.
I usually wear dress slacks or a pencil skirt, cute top or blazer. It's been super duper hot here lately, so I've been rocking the peep toes like it 's my job.
Go for conservative the first day, see what the office social structure is like, and dress like the person who acts the least like an asshole.
My office is super small with no client interaction but I still have to dress up, like nice pants and sweaters everyday, because I am at the front desk. It makes no sense.
I'm no help at all. We are allowed to wear hats, t shirts, jeans, sweats, sandals. the only thing we can't wear is shorts.
Being a member of management I don't come in in sweats or anything, but I do wear tshirts as do all other members of management. It's only this way because our corporate office is in another state. They don't get to dress down.
business casual = sunday church wear... you don't have to be in a head to toe suit, but nice slacks with a button down or sweater... or skirt/blouse...
i like that we have casual fridays... but i def like wearing "office clothes" too :)
Our office is business casual, but some people (myself included) dress way casual. In the summer, I always wear a sundress (sometimes sleeveless) and sandals. I wear my hair in a ponytail 90% of the week. No one has ever complained though, and I look far better than some of my coworkers who wear capris, a t-shirt, and socks with flip flops.
I once worked a job that was business professional, and it had a list of COLORS we were allowed to wear - black, gray, navy, khaki. No white or "fashion colors." No prints. Must be wearing at least three pieces (jacket+trousers+and blouse or skirt+blouse+cardigan). Hose at ALL times, even in the summer. I lasted three months. I don't do well with dress codes.
ok i'm bored and i have a webcam in my office so here is a picture of what i'm wearing today =)
we're business casual too
i'm wearing a H&M scarf, Banana Republic Knit Top, and Express editor style pants.

Oh how I miss casual Fridays....
I love those Express editor pants for work, too, Finally. I must have 5 pairs!
While we are technically business casual, since we aren't the main office we wear jeans all the time unless a client is coming in. Suits for meetings with clients, but mostly jeans everyday.
We're business casual so I generally wear dress pants and a sweater or cardigan in the wintertime. In the summer, it's generally a nice top with a skirt or a dress. Lately the ladies in the office have been more casual than business. Some of them will wear leggings as substitute for pants! So for them, a long sweater and leggings are "business casual." I am waiting for HR to send them a notice!
I agree with going a little dressier on the first day and just see what everyone else does. To me, "business casual" means a knee-length dress, nice pants, nice/girly top, etc. Peep toes I think are fine.
Honestly, whatever I want, lol. I wear jeans and t-shirts with a cardigan a lot. And tennis shoes. Yay manufacturing engineering! i wear jeans and nice flip flops during the summer if i'm not going to be in the lab =]. polos on occassion.
Sometimes i drift towards comfy khakis (my banana republic ones feel like pjs...they're so soft) and a light sweater.
To me, business casual says "khakis and a polo" with casual (not tennis) shoes. You can dress that up or down big time. Comfy dress pants, casual shirt, very very dark jeans with a dressier top to balance, etc.
Basically, don't dress like a crap bum and you're okay!
I work in a lab so I can wear whatever I want as long as I have my legs and feet covered. Usually it's a tshirt, jeans and my danskos. I purposefully don't wear anything nice because it will inevitably get holes or stains on it because I refuse to wear a lab coat.
I think a good gauge of Business casual = what would you wear to a family function - guys in khakis & button downs and girls in appropriate dresses/skirts or pants and something conservative on top.
I'd def. go with something more conservative for your 1st couple days till you get a feel for how people dress.
I work for a huge corp machine - but it depends on what dept you work in. When you get in the elevator you can tell where someone works for the most part- there's "the finance guy uniform" (charcoal grey pants, blue shirt) but then there's the graphics folks down the hall & those folks are no holds barred. One guy wore scrub bottoms as pants & a Cuban summer shirt with flip flops yesterday. I'm usually a T-shirt & Jeans kinda girl. I wore a dress with ballet flats today but I'll dress much more business like if I have a meeting, so it kinda depends.
