@futuremrsp1122:  I always believed (and google backs this up) that 100 points = 1 carat. However, I was in a jewelry store recently and she referred to a 0.40 carat diamond as “4 points” so it probably means 0.7 carats. I can’t imagine a 0.07 carat diamond even being worth giving specs for!

Weight of Small Diamonds

The weight of smaller diamonds is often expressed as pointsinstead of carats — there are 100 points in a carat. Another way to look at it is to say that each point equals 0.01, or one-hundredth, of a carat.

Point Examples

  • 0.05 means five one-hundredths, so a 0.05 carat diamond equals five points.

  • 0.25 means twenty-five one-hundredths, so a 0.25 carat diamond equals twenty-five points, or one quarter of a carat.

So 7 points is 0.07 carats and 10 points is 0.10 carats

@towandafox:  Yeah, as I just posted though, it seems like some people working in jewelry stores aren’t aware of the proper decimals! I had one call a 0.40 carat diamond “4 points” – she said it AND wrote it down on the reference card.

@futuremrsp1122:  I think it means .07 carat weight.  At that small of a weight, it’s definitely talking about the band, not the main stone.

@futuremrsp1122:  Yeah they absolutely could be! Pave stones are often in that range. Hopefully I just had a bad experience with an ignorant jeweler! 7 points is definitely 0.07 carats according to the system!

@KhaleesiStormborn: Aww the conundrum of decimals.

@futuremrsp1122:  I guess it depends if the jeweler knows her stuff or not. For reference here are sizes. You be able to tell by size what the jeweler was talking about.

It’s more often used for smaller stones.  The diamonds in my (thin, channel-set) wedding band are about 3 points each.  🙂

@futuremrsp1122:  100 points = 1 carat

It’s a shorthand. Instead of saying “point seven carats,” jewelers say “seven points.”

TCW on the wedding band is about 1/3ct, the diamonds only go that far around.
